    Musical Mondays Week 9 Pete's Dragon (1977)

Maybe the problem is that you love The Lake House so much and you are having trouble coming to terms with that...

I see so many fucking gifs of AtU that I feel like I must see it from start to finish (in 3 second clips) at least once a week. It really bums me out.

No, dawg! Elliot is Hawkeye (i.e. They want us to think that he's cooler than he actually is)

My college did a performance of "Our American Cousin" where they added in a gun shot at the moment where he would have been assassinated and made the audience observe a moment of silence before finishing the play. It was...an interesting choice.

Does anyone else feel like Pete's Dragon is a weird Civil War metaphor? Like, why else are the human-owning Gogan's Southerners? Doesn't the movie take place in Maine? My theory is that Nora represents the North. The Gogan's represent the Confederacy. Pete is a "runaway slave." Which means Elliot is Abraham Lincoln and Doc Terminus is John Wilkes Booth. Reunification is represented by Paul's return. Shit, it's basically a history book come to life...

I think I probably watched this version too. I just think I only remembered the parts that were actually interesting to a child's brain and blocked everything else out.

God, that's hot...and Daryl Hannah's pretty cool too.

Did anyone else find it strange that only a couple of hours after her father suddenly claims to have seen a dragon, Nora meets a mysterious young boy who claims to actually have a dragon, and she has absolutely no reaction to this? Like, I'm not saying she should believe either of them, but think how weird it would be if two people came up to you today, independently, and said they had just seen a dragon. That's pretty fucking random. You would think you would be at least be like, "Huh...that's really bizarre."

Wait! If "Happiest Home in These Hills" is cut, does this mean the movie just opens with Pete waking up (inexplicably) in a log? And then, in the Third Act, these strange Hillpeople just show up out of nowhere claiming ownership over Pete? The shortened version sounds even more bonkers...

Newsies is on Hulu and keeps trying to aggressively impose itself on my son. He'd be watching Sheriff Callie, and instead of going to the next episode, like it's supposed to, "the bad movie" would starting. He's completely given up on Callie now

Is that like purple Dimetap? A medicine so sweet it would form a layer of sugar crust around the lid...delicious.

Oh, shit... Cam Bert, I think your mother is going to have a hard time this week deciding who's Ted Neeley Handsome* this week. I'm guessing Jim Dale--if she's into magicians. I guess Nora's beau isn't too bad either. He kind of has a Richard Kiel quality about him though. Fun Fact: Richard Kiel played a steel toothed henchman in the Gene Wilder-Richard Pryor movie Silver Streak a year before debuting as Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me. *Max, every movie, since learning Cam Bert's mother had a huuuuuuuuge cruch on Ted Neeley (AKA Jesus Christ Superstar), she tells us who the most bangable person in a movie is.

I agree 100% ETA: And Incredible Hulk which I keep forgetting is technically a part of Phase One...or that it even exists.

Just curious...how'd you narrow it down to the 50's? Did I miss something? Because homeboy's ship looked positively 18th century, they're still in horse drawn carriages, slavery's apparently still legal, but they also have such amenities as fresh baked bread delivery. I was having real issues trying to peg down when exactly all this shit was happening...

I really enjoyed Mickey Rooney and Jim Dale. I think you're right though, Red Buttons never really found his "thing." BTW-Jim Dale narrates the Harry Potter audiobooks and he's really great--even if his pronunciations are a bit wonky.

I have to agree with Tom and say that I thought the songs were rather forgettable as well. The two stand outs for me were "It's Not Easy" and "Brazzle Dazzle Day." Both of which nailed that wholesome Disney vibe for me.

Exactly! Also, that teacher was fucking unreasonable. You know Pete isn't the one who started ringing that bell! He was sitting right in front of you when it started!
