You wouldn't be saying that if they kept sitting their homeless asses on your Range Rover.

I think it helps when you see him as Young Mark. Young Mark is just a couple years out of high school and trying to forge his own identity apart from his parents. Old Mark is a dickish man-child who should take a decent paying job for once in his life and start assuming some adult responsibilities.

That's the problem. It would be artificial instead of Art (oh, fuck that was good! I'm becoming one with the Musical, guys! ETA: or I'm just figuring out the etymology of the word "art.") He does offer them rent for life if they comply, though. Maybe this lends authenticity to his Hipster Mecca?

In the stage version (he, he), Mark makes a point of saying they get they have a single, industrial strength extension cord that provides their power. He never says where it's plugged into though. I imagine they were stealing power from one of Benny's (or his father-in-law's) properties. Another one of those, "I'll turn a blind eye to this-for now."

RE: Cyber Studio I can't say for sure, for sure, but I thought Benny said something to Mark about it being good for him (i.e. his movie making). I thought of it as being kind of a place where you could go and rent equipment and studio time to put together your multimedia projects. If that's the case, then there was an irony in it as he's basically co-opting their scene. On a pragmatic level, the Cyber Studio sounds like something that would actually be beneficial to the artsy bohemian types living in Alphabet City, but since the price is "selling out" and gentrification, they gang is against it. Does that make sense or did I just make up a thing?

Same. Movie Version was okay. Stage version was legit great. Not only did it make more sense, but it was just more of a spectacle.

They WERE friends (They reconcile in the stage version). He owns the building and is letting them stay there. When Maureen decides to do her protest, he decides to kind of extort (not quit the right word) them for unpaid rent unless they deal with her.

Me too! I just heard Team America's "AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDSAIDSAIDS, AIDS AIDS. AIDS!"

To touch on a point you made last page, I also wondered if there was a "good" cinematic version of Rent that could be made. While I think Columbus did the best that he could, after watching the stage version, Rent feels like it was specifically made for the theater. The claustrophobia. The audience interaction. Even the way Mark would speak to the audience was more rapid fire, like there wasn't enough time and he had to get it all out before it was too late. That change from stage to screen made their issues seem smaller and not as urgent.

Oh, he's definitely post grad. But I would say none of them are over, say, 25?

I wasn't too impressed with "Take Me or Leave Me," but I wasn't really invested in their relationship either. Same with (movie version) Roger and Mimi.

Yeah, Tom is in college and Mimi says she's 19. Pre-stage version me was able to suspend my disbelief. Post-stage version? Not so much.

Well there goes my pick...your loss though. The rap opera The Dogs on Death Row is amazing! Rolling Stone said it was "Bow wow WOW!"

Yeah, CakeBug has made some comments about how old they were in the movie, and it didn't really bother me. I was also impressed they used the original cast even though they were older. Then I watched the stage version with age appropriate actors... No, these fuckers need be young. I couldn't stand Old Mark. I get Young Mark. It feels much more tragic when you're thinking, "These are just young, scrappy (sometimes dumb) kids."

I will say, some of the harmonies in this were pretty great-especially between Mark and Roger. The two songs I come back to the most are "Rent," and "What You Own" followed closely by "I'll Cover You." I hate, I hate, hate "One Song Glory" and "I Should Tell You."

You really should. It is way better. It makes a difference. In the movie, I cried when Angel died, but when Mimi "died" I felt nothing. When I watched the stage version I got tears both time-even though I knew what was going to happen. I do agree with Fister though. I preferred movie/original cast Tom and Angel. Not saying the stage versions were bad, just not as good. Roger is way better in the stage version too.

Sorry, I can't edit my replies to the relevant sections right now... Re: Seasons of Love, I think it was because it was THE song of the movie. From what I read it was actually a hit, so I guess the idea was to give it to you right at the top. It makes way more sense to come after the intermission though.

I think we're saying the same thing if you are saying you liked the stage version better. I'm typing these quickly as I do other things. I might not have been clear. Also, I think Angel is just a fixture of Alphabet City. Maureen could have met her independently.

It is, but I'll be honest, I checked out both in the movie and stage version. That crap was obnoxious! Although, purposefully so. So...congrats? Maybe she's saying we're all just bovine, but there's beauty and strength in that and we can still rebel against the oppressive ranchers... Or something...

I'll just start off by saying, after watching the movie, I couldn't understand why some people take issue with it. I liked it just fine. And then I watched the Broadway version and I was like, "Aha..."
  22. Hey, guys! Cinco DeNio was on the ball. No waiting this week... The new movie is...
