Hey, Cainnon, congrats right back at ya! It's seriously the best--molding those gullible little minds to your will. Thanks, Jarry! Trust me--I'm not as upset as you might think. These people don't effect my life one stitch. People who disagree with me, but are polite, I'm totally cool with. Anyone who's been an ass, regardless of their position, are like a fart on a windy day--all bluster, no bite. -

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

Yeah, I feel like this has been a real bad movie for this to happen on. It was a two hour episode so they were able to cover quite a bit and there wasn't a whole lot there to begin with. Between, Paul, Jason, Cameron and Pete, they pretty much covered all of the points I wanted to make--which wasn't even a whole lot to begin with. Since I watched it with my son in the room and he wasn't letting me just soak up its awesomeness, I'm going to try watching it again tomorrow morning. Maybe then I can find something worth talking about... Shit, son. This was me every time I read some variation of, "Cameron sucks." -

I think you may be misunderstanding (or maybe I'm misunderstanding you)...It's not their Facebook posts that piss me off, it's the fact that at least two people reconsidered joining the forums due to the negativity on this specific thread. I don't feel like those negative posts are a fair picture of the community we've built here, and I feel like even the people who agree with that opinion, and are regular Posters, have been pretty respectful during this whole debacle. -

I get what you're saying...I just feel like the movie was marketed as a "Village People" movie, not a "the guy who made The Village People" movie. I was a little let down by how unimportant they were to the plot... -

Finally, some sanity! I'm not sure...I feel like a woman being even a month older than a dude used to be a big deal. It's a good question though. -

I really wanted to let this whole thing go, but I just saw this on Facebook, and it seriously pisses me off. I really hate the idea that a) new members are being turned off by forum posts from people who are either never here or only created an account to bitch, and b ) that people on the outside feel that these people represent us as a whole. Almost anyone who has posted anything negative only have a handful of posts to their name. I'm not on Facebook, but I really hope someone will reach out to these guys and let them know it's not normally like this. I really do enjoy new voices and perspectives around here. I don't want people to be turned off by a couple of bad apples who will be long gone before you know it. I promise, that's the last thing I'll say on the matter. It just really makes me mad is all...- 560 replies

But that's the issue, isn't it? Obviously, her comedy didn't do anything for you, and by the looks of it, many others, but I did enjoy it. Now, I don't want this to devolve into a case of "my comedy is better than your comedy," it's just a matter of taste. I don't want to hear strangers tell me I'm wrong for finding something funny any more than you want to hear me tell you that you're wrong for not finding it funny. So you don't want social issues in your comedy? Then don't listen to this one episode, it's not for you--there are 133 others and (hopefully) many more to come. However, just because a group of people didn't like it doesn't mean it's time to grab the pitchforks and light the torches--they weren't wrong for releasing it nor is Cameron "not funny," she's just not funny to you. If you feel the need to comment on it (although, I generally take the "if you don't have anything nice to say" approach to these things myself) then do so, just don't be a jerk about it. I mean, I get it. We all have our ideas of what "funny" is. If you want to get on my bad side, make a rape or pedophilia joke. You're going to lose me real quick. But you have every right to make that joke, just as I have the equal right not to listen to it. So, to the people who didn't like the episode--I'm sorry. I'm sorry that it wasn't your cup of tea. You've made your point, but that doesn't mean you're right. It doesn't even mean that I'm right. It just means we're all different and we just need to accept that--which is kind of the point of the jokes Cameron was making anyway... -

Oh man, I long for the days where we would discuss the movie on this thread...I really wanted to stay out of it, but here I go diving back into the shit. I understand what you're saying, Oddbomb, but we've always tried to be pretty cool on this thread when it comes to criticism. I've called Bullshit on things before, and never had to worry about the threat of being banned from the boards. The difference really is between offering criticism and just being critical. I'm not sure how it was on the CBB board, but my problem is when I read multiple comments that read, "I'm not anti-lesbian, but Cameron..." or "I don't want people to think I don't get feminism, but this episode..." When you couch your comments in these types of phrases, you're saying (implicitly) "this does bother me and I can't see passed it." And you know some of these comments are coming from a bigoted, angry place when I can write a post, before even listening to the episode--one that took no sides, just an appeal to "be excellent to another"--and get attacked for trying to censor everyone for being too critical. Again, I had not listened to the episode nor taken a side! How did this person "know" I would be against him/her? Here's the thing: Cameron Esposito is a human being. She is also a professional comedian. If you don't care for her stuff--fine, say that...nicely. Here's a form letter everyone can use, "Dang, I usually love [blank], but I wasn't too thrilled with [blank] on today's episode. Oh well...better luck next time" (Please note the complete and utter lack of anything that references the person's gender, sexual orientation, religion, or race.) "But Cameron H," you say, "it was because she talked about those thing that I didn't like it...You can see why I had to create/dust off my account just so I could tell everyone how badly my urethra got all twisted up." Again, this may point to an underlying issue within you, but I'll play ball. You can also bring this stuff up (i.e. "hot button issues"), but only if you're willing to do so in a respectful manner and keep an open mind. If you can't do so, don't waste everyone's time with your negativity. I would like to point out the "Be a Man" discussion back for Temptation. Everyone here had opinions about it, but we all spoke to each other like adults and with respect. In fact, I believe that's where Taylor Anne Photo and I first engaged with each other (on opposite sides) and now she's one of my favorite-est people on the boards. I also would argue that, based on the reaction to her on this thread, I think that it's more important than ever that Cameron does take a stand on issues regarding feminism and sexuality and include them in her act. Despite what people are saying here, it is obvious we still have a long way to go. Sometimes, it's easier to tackle these issues with laughter rather than vitriol.- 560 replies

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

Well, it only took me ten hours but I finally finished the episode. I loved it. Definitely in my Top Ten or so HDTGM episodes. I thought both Cameron and Pete killed it and the dynamic they all had as a group was fantastic. I'd very much like to hear more from both Cameron and Pete--either together or separately. I don't have a lot to say about this movie that hasn't already been covered. The thing that really stood out to me about this "Village People movie" was how the Village People themselves come off as the most ancillary of ancillary characters. You could have written them out of the movie completely and it really wouldn't have changed the story all that much. What the movie actually seems to be about is a composer's roommate, who uses her "brains" to coerce her horny ex-boyfriend into giving a bunch of random dudes she meets on the street a shot at super stardom, thereby achieving her roommate's dream for him. Also, this movie not only accepts, but revels in the fact that The Village People were a manufactured group. Gute's mother even says, "My son invented The Village People" and no one even bats a single eyelash! The Village People don't say, "Well, The Village People wouldn't be a thing if we weren't such great dancers and singers," and Samantha doesn't step in and say, "Um...Technically, I invented The Village People; Jack just wrote a bunch of songs he couldn't even sing..." I think, had I wrote this movie, I would have put The Village People themselves at the center of the movie instead of trying to tell a fake origin story. Basically, do A Hard Day's Night, or even Help!, just starring The Village People. Shoot, that movie practically writes itself... I also have a hard time believing that The Construction Worker's dream involves him fighting off the sexual advances of a throng of beautiful women wearing red evening dresses. Nice try, movie. But just like Justin Bieber's entire music catalog--I'm not buying it. However, as terrible as this movie was in (many, many) parts, I do have to say I agree with Cameron's take on it. When Samantha says, "Do you know something? I don't judge people. I accept them. There isn't a person who breathes who doesn't have certain peculiarities. As long as it doesn't hurt anybody, it's all right with me" I was very impressed. No, they don't overtly refer to homosexuality in the movie, but it is clearly implicit in almost every scene. Yes, there was a lot of stereotyping, but there was also a lot of "there's no reason to be ashamed of this thing that we are" going on in it as well. For this reason, I think this movie was, in a lot of ways, ahead of its time; and with Samantha's line serving as it's thesis statement, it transforms itself from a silly little movie and transcends into a movie that puts forward a very relevant message of positivity and inclusiveness that, even a quarter of a century later, we would all be foolish not to take to heart. -

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

I haven't had a chance to listen yet, but seriously guys... Let's all be cool, and remember, sometimes being cool is just knowing when to shut the fuck up... Case in point... -
Sorry, I'm on vacation this week, so it's taking me a little longer than usual to respond. Not even sure if I'll get the episode until next week... Yeah, I get what you're saying, but you have to look at it from your "Captain Marvel" perspective. You know how they are used in the comics, but your Average Joe may not. So yes, I'm sure this line is being delivered just as you suspect, but by introducing the trailer with this line, I feel like they are being pretty disingenuous to people maybe not as savvy to the source material. People who don't know anything about them might think, "Oh shit, these have to be some badasses if they can take on Supes!" And be thoroughly disappointed when the get something totally different...or pleasantly surprised. All I can say is I am currently unimpressed. Yeah, whitewashing is problematic, and having no real knowledge of the character, I don't want to defend this too hard, but I believe The Ancient One is also canonically portrayed as male, too. I think the idea is to play the role sort of ambiguously--both gender-wise and ethnicity-wise. Kind of like she exists outside of such distinctions... But I honestly have no idea...I'm still pissed about the accent thing. I mean, I don't know anything about Doctor Strange. Him being British instead of American makes no nevermind to me...Free Cummerbund's voice! Also: ETA: Oh! And while on vacation I had the opportunity to see a movie in the theaters. I did not see BvS (The manager there said he saw an 85% drop from 1st to 2nd week), but I did see Zootopia. I thought it was pretty good, albeit a little long. Also, I think it may have been bogged down by too many "morals." Any of which would have been great on there own--and I agree with all of them--but taken all together, it came off as a tad preachy. But otherwise, it was very good.

My biggest issue with Can't Stop the Music was that everytime a new character was introduced that wasn't Guttenberg, Perrine, or a Village Person, my interest waned about 15%. I think I bottomed out around 40 minutes in... In other news, what does everyone think about the new Suicide Squad and Doctor Strange trailers? Here are my thoughts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6sA3w7zMZA Q: What if Superman had decided to fly down, rip off the roof of the White House, and grab the President right out of the Oval Office? Who would have stopped him? A: How about we get a group of criminals to stop him? A group that will include a scantily clad, clown girl with a regular old baseball bat, and a dude who shoots guns really good--keeping in mind--bullets have no effect on Superman. We will then round out the team with people with swords and shit--which will also have zero effect... How in the good goddamn can you cast Benedict Cumberbatch in your movie and not allow him to speak in his rich, dulcet English accent? "We got Cumberbatch!" "Great--now let's have him speak with a generic American accent." "Perfect."

What "jokes" are you talking about?

I just wanted to say, in the last thread when we were pairing Tango & Cash with different songs, I was very close to using this one: Needless to say, I am very much looking forward to this movie.

Oh yeah...that's the stuff. Now defend the Religious Freedom Bill while I choke myself with a belt and jerk it into a can of Orange Crush.

All the respect, courtesy, sensitivity, and genuine self-awareness on this thread... C'mon, guys! This is the Internet here! We're dangerously close to giving it a good name! This is what I'm going to do: I'm going to turn my back, and when I turn back around, I want to see at least ten hate-filled posts dripping with half-baked rhetoric and insane assumptions. They should also include numerous grammatical and spelling errors, and at minimum, 70% of the post should be written in furious Caps Lock. Please, guys, I can't live in a world where decent people might actually exist!
-
100% agree. I don't know that there is a history between them, just that was the idea for the movie. As you said, the only reason to do this is for fan service--which always makes me wary.
-
Are we 100% sure that that was the actual Chewbacca and not just some guy calling in as he tried to do a split?
-
I agree with you on the whole "better as a silent threat" thing, although, The Clone Wars did an arc about his life after the events of Attack of the Clones that was pretty good. Then again, I'm not exactly clamoring for more. Also, I thought I read somewhere that it was going to be a Han Solo/Boba Fett movie that would kind of go into where their animosity for one another came from. I do think that this could be interesting, because, as controversial as this might sound, I don't think Han would make a very interesting lead character either. In my mind, he's kind of Jack Sparrow type and works better when he's reacting to others and not the prime mover of the story. However, I have no idea where I heard this rumor, so whether it's still the case, or was ever the case, I can't say with any authority.
