EPISODE 107 — Lake Placid: LIVE!

Something else that has continued to bother me is Cyr's relationship with the female deputy. I may be alone on this, but I never got the feeling that she was all that into him. At best, it felt like he was firmly entrenched in the friend zone. So later, when they are going to Crocodile Cove, and she says, "Please! I'll have sex with you! Let's just get out of here!" and he replies, in all earnestness, "Darling, he's not going to hurt me" it thoroughly perplexed me. It seems to me that her intention wasn't so much, "Let's get out of here so we can fuck, because damn it, I just care so much about you," but more "Hey guy, I think you are big, sweaty gross-o, but since I have absolutely no desire to be eaten by a weird, mega-crocodile today, I will, reluctantly, have sex with you. How's about it?" With this as the intended meaning, it seems like you could have then written a million jokes with Cyr's reply that would have still kept him in character as a narcissistic, crocodile lover. Yet this self-proclaimed "comedy" horror film decided that this was the place where it was going to play it straight?? Seriously, am I just not getting it? It just doesn't feel right to me, and honestly, confuses and infuriates me. It would be like if someone were to sing "It's been a Hard Day's..." and then just stopped without singing, "Night." I am, however, more than willing to concede that the genius of David E. Kelley's script may just be too sophisticated and well beyond my churlish grasp of the material.

EPISODE 107 — Lake Placid: LIVE!

At one point in the movie, Bill Pullman takes Oliver Platt to task and tells him that "despite all his fancy equipment" if he steps a toe out of line one more time he is out of there. Did I miss something? What exactly is this "fancy" equipment he's talking about? From what I saw, all Cyr was bringing to the table--besides lecherousness and an unhealthy obsession with reptiles--was a cheap-ish looking sonar device (which I am sure they could have picked up at a reasonable price at any decent sporting goods store), a couple of shovels, some rope, and a boom box. Is he referring to the helicopter? I mean, as far as helicopters go I guess it's pretty nice, but I wouldn't go so far as to describe it as "fancy." This also begs the question: had Cyr not shown up, what was going to be their plan? Without sonar equipment, what were they going to do, just paddle around on canoes and just hope they ran into it?

EPISODE 107 — Lake Placid: LIVE!

A moment in Lake Placid that I found delightfully confounding was when they are on the lake and Gleeson asks Platt something to the effect of, "If there is a crocodile in the lake, why would you want to be underwater?" Which is, honestly, a pretty valid question and one the audience probably should be asking themselves as well. Platt's replies to Gleeson, "Well, they don't see very well underwater..." Now I'm not sure how being underwater with an angry, blind crocodile would really be any better, but that's really neither here nor there, because when Platt goes on to elaborate on why this is a good plan, the director takes the opportunity to pull out on the action so Platt's entire explanation is obscured by the roar of the boat's motor. By the time the director does choose to check back in on our protagonists, Platt is wrapping up and basically says, "...and that's why this is a good idea." That's okay, Lake Placid! We don't really need you to explain any of you bonkers logic to us...

EPISODE 107 — Lake Placid: LIVE!

I am absolutely game for this, but as long as we are imposing upon Mr. Tompkins valuable time, I would not say "no" to a live episode of The Time Machine (2002) featuring the esteemed H.G. Wells as the guest.

EPISODE 107 — Lake Placid: LIVE!

Going into the third act, Platt's character suddenly and inexplicably declares that they need to capture this crocodile instead of killing it. Pullman and Gleeson are both understandably dubious. In order to allay their concerns, Platt tells them that if anything goes awry they can hop in the trucks and get away because the crocodile is, "not that fast..." Now this is a fantastic decision on the screenwriter's part and I couldn't be behind it more! You see, if there is one thing an audience member watching an action/horror/creature feature doesn't want it's for the film to heighten the tension in any way. I wish even more movies would make the bold decision to neuter their antagonist in the final minutes of the movie. "You want me to act as bait so you can catch this serial killer?" "Yes, but don't worry. There's no danger. We've discovered the killer is missing a leg, so if things get crazy, just walk away at a semi-brisk pace." See? Isn't that so much better?

EPISODE 107 — Lake Placid: LIVE!

Finally! With the addition of Hector Cyr I have the last piece of the puzzle for my movie! I am still working on the script, but here’s the elevator pitch: In the not too distant future, genetically modified “smart” sharks and a race of highly evolved dinosaurs team up to destroy humanity and establish a prehistoric Utopia. They have unlocked the power of the atom and their claw/fin is on the trigger. In a world with its back against the wall, a group of highly educated Scientists will need to set aside their differences to take down this menace once and for all. Alone, they only know so much, but together, they are The Specialists: Action Scientists! Led by intrepid doctors Nick “the Worm Guy” Tatopoulus and Ian “Dr. Chaos” Malcolm, this team--which also includes: crocodile expert Hector “Dragon-eyes” Cyr, ichthyologist, Matt “the Hoop” Hooper, and Cal Tech grad Tom “the Kid” Scoggins-- will need to pool their research together, Google a bunch of semi-interesting facts, and conclude the only solution is in the hands of a young primatologist: gorilla lothario Dr. Peter Elliott. Will Dr. Elliott’s army of ASL fluent gorillas be enough to stem a tidal wave of shark riding, super dinosaurs? Will the doctors’ idiosyncrasies fail to synchronize? Will Scoggins decide on a Specialty? Was the answer “love” the whole time? Find out this summer when Action will Equal Mass Times the Speed of FIGHT!…squared. (And yes, in keeping with current movie trends, of course this will all be a part of a shared universe and will include an all-female group titled The Special-ettes: Science Harder!)

No, not surprisingly, Rage Against the Machine's "No Shelter" has a video that has nothing to do with Godzilla. It actually starts with the executions of Sacco and Venzetti, because y'know...of course it would. I also wanted to add: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eijz1hSj9u0

As much as I love The Wallflowers, and I do, I have to say my favorite song on that soundtrack (which I shamefully bought new back in the day) has to be Jamiroquai's "Deeper Underground."

    HDTGM Jams Mega Mix

I am trying to limit myself to one song per movie, so even though I'd like to add Mike Myers' "9 to 5" cover from the Love Guru, I think this is slightly better (i.e. shorter) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XDIJJtFesI I also assume we'll need some From Justin to Kelly and Spice World stuff eventually....

First of all, thank you for putting this out there,Lando! It is a fantastic distraction from doing anything productive at work. Secondly, do the songs we suggest have to come exclusively from movies currently covered by HDTGM? I only ask because The Last Dragon (one of my legit favorite movies) has fantastic music and is totally ripe for the HDTGM treatment. Hopefully they will get around to it someday, but in the meantime here are three videos that help illustrate why this movie is so great: (I'm not embedding the actual song for this one as I think it needs to be seen in context with the film) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWVhiIisH30
