Was anyone else upset that in the process of escaping the slave pits, Stella Star basically got a ton of innocent people killed? Don't get me wrong, I'm super happy she escaped a life of slavery, but it might have been nice if our hero had helped at least one other person get away. At the very least, it would have been cool if her casualty count hadn't been quite so excessive.

I’ll be the first to admit, I might not have caught everything that was going on in this movie, but if I’m not mistaken, I’m pretty sure Emperor Edelweiss’ plan at the end of the movie is to fake the death of his entire fleet, but then immediately attack so as to blow any kind of tactical advantage such a ploy might offer. I’m really not sure how that plan accomplished anything other than weakening their own space navy.

Regarding the name “Elle,” in the Star Wars novelizations, the droids’ designations are similarly written phonetically. So R2-D2 is spelled Artoo-Detoo and C-3PO is See-Threepio. This is also true in a lot of Star Wars media if you watch with closed captioning. I would guess this is to give their characters “proper” names rather than just serial numbers to help the audience better identify them as beings rather than things. So I think the hosts are correct and “Elle” is supposed to be the phonetically spelled version of the letter “L” - although he must have been one of the first off the production line to have a one letter serial number. This explanation makes even more sense if the screenwriter was only familiar with Star Wars through the novels. He was following a precedent.

This is 100% true.

If The Godfather movies weren’t so long, I probably would too. Together they’re almost 6 1/2 hours! That’s basically half the Halloween franchise! HDTGM I can justify a little better. I’ve already seen Star Crash and I’m guessing that the Friday the 13th live episode they did will be the Halloween episode.

Same. I watched AG because it was relatively short, but The Godfathers are a bit long. Maybe I’ll rewatch them next month.

Right, which is why I said it sometimes helps. My point was more, and perhaps I didn’t explain it as well as I should have, if you watch a movie and it doesn’t work for you, you shouldn’t have to keep watching it until it does. Like if I don’t like a movie, I don’t want someone to say, “Yeah, but on your third or fourth rewatch it starts to get good!” If I don’t like it, or it didn’t “grab” me for whatever reason, I’m not going to devote 6-8 more hours of my life watching it again and again until it finally does. I don’t have the time for that. It’s like if I don’t like a television show and someone says, “It starts off slow, but it gets great at episode six!” Fuck that. I’m not going to waste my time sitting through something mediocre with just the promise it might get better. If it’s capable of being good by episode six, then it was capable of being good with the first episode. Like I said to Taylor, I only rewatched it for the podcast, and the reason I asked if she rewatched it was to see if her opinion stayed the same.
-
Absolutely! It’s all just nostalgia porn.
-
No, I totally get that. The only reason I watched it again was for Unspooled, and I was super apathetic about the prospect. I really wouldn’t recommend watching it again if you don’t have the mind to. In my mind, a “good” movie shouldn’t require multiple rewatches. I mean, sometimes it helps, but in my opinion, if it’s truly good, then it should grab you the first time.
-
Had you seen it before? I only ask because I was thoroughly unimpressed the first time I watched it, but for some reason I was really into it this time. I’m not sure what clicked for me, but I was far more receptive to it on this watch through. On Letterboxd I bumped it from something like two stars up to four. But, yeah, I totally hear you, and I get it.

Musical Mondays Week 76 I Kissed a Vampire

Yeah, but like you said, he controlled himself. He clearly doesn’t want to hurt her. Rather than acting like a goof, he might as well Just tell her what’s going on and she can help him resist temptation. I think the gender politics of the movie are pretty jacked up in general. -

Was anyone else annoyed that he wouldn’t just come out and tell her he was a vampire? It’s not like “vampires” are an obscure creature from folklore. I’m sure it would go down like this: Guy: I’m a vampire. Gal: Whatever. Guy: No, seriously. Gal: Prove it. ::he proves it:: Gal: Oh, I guess you are a vampire. Are you going to eat me? Guy: No. Gal: Oh, okay then. I just don’t think it would be as big of a deal as the movie suggests. -

It was crazy because she was clearly not a dancer so they had the other dancers do the heavy lifting while she would walk back and forth to briefly swing around a pole. -

Again, Rockula would probably be more fun. Although I’d watch either for the show -
Amy & Paul scuba-dive into 1967’s generation-gap dramedy The Graduate! They look for thematic connections in early Nichols & May sketches, wonder how such a small scale film became an enormous hit, and ask whether Mrs. Robinson is a fantasy or a fully-formed character. Plus: Katharine Ross (Elaine) joins Amy to praise Mike Nichols’ direction. Which cast member of Saving Private Ryan would be a good replacement for Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate? Musical Mondays Week 76 I Kissed a Vampire

There was a point where he cut himself or something and sucked on the blood, and I couldn’t help wondering if sucking your own blood as a vampire was kind of like masturbating. -

What blew my mind about this movie was just how shoddy all the choreography was. A lot of it seemed real community theater. They wouldn’t really use the environment and everything seemed surprisingly claustrophobic. It was really frustrating when it came to Lucas Gabreel because we from High School Musical that he can dance!
