There actually arenā€™t rules and the NBA is stupid for not taking advantage of it. It would be paw-some!
  3. Just wanted to drop in to say Iā€™m really annoyed I havenā€™t had time to listen to the episode yet. I watched this fucking thing, and I need catharsis

    All the Presidentā€™s Men

I once saw a transcript for a sermon in which the pastor was using the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team as a metaphor but he was really just outlining the plot of Cool Runnings beat for beat. Not that I necessarily have an issue with that, but he was trying to pass off what happens in the movie as historical fact. I like to think that maybe it was Saturday night and he was watching the Disney Channel and thought, ā€œOh fuck! I forgot to write a sermon this week!ā€

Honestly, I think I have a generally negative view of ā€œtrueā€ stories. Thatā€™s not to say I dislike them outright (I honestly like quite a few), but Iā€™m far more skeptical. Memories can be wonky, and due to the constraints of narrative structure, things get omitted or added to give the whole thing form. I mean, I get that for brevityā€™s sake, itā€™s easier to say ā€œtrue storyā€ instead of ā€œfictionalized version of actual events,ā€ but the cynic in me tends to balk whenever the word ā€œtrueā€ is bandied about. Iā€™m more interested in ā€œhonestyā€ than ā€œtruth,ā€ if that makes sense. Yeah, things might not have been exactly as depicted, but this was what basically happened. Honestly, I think thatā€™s one of the things I respected about the Mƶtley CrĆ¼e movie The Dirt. They straight up break the fourth wall and say, ā€œIt didnā€™t actually happen like this,ā€ ā€œI remember this differently,ā€ and ā€œThere was also this other guy there, but we couldnā€™t fit him in the movie.ā€ Itā€™s refreshing for a biopic to come right out and say, ā€œWeā€™re kind of lying to you, but donā€™t get hung up on it.ā€

MOVIES SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN 90 MINUTES!

    All the Presidentā€™s Men

I agree! I was kind of taken aback by their overall apathy. Iā€™ve seen this movie twice now and I liked it even more this time. I also agree that we didnā€™t really need to get into the nitty-gritty of Woodward and Bernsteinā€™s backgrounds. I never really even thought about needing anything more. I feel like the movie gives us just enough, but doesnā€™t bog us down too much. I actually donā€™t think thereā€™s that much more to say. These guys ARE their jobs. Thatā€™s what they do ā€” non-stop. I donā€™t think a dinner scene with them discussing why they became journalists in the first place would really add anything to either the movie or their characters.

First of all, Iā€™m not sure if Jackson Maine is Victor Wong level of fame But actually, thatā€™s another good reason why acting is better than music. Due to it being a visual medium, I think it would be far more likely to recognize a less famous actor over a more famous musician.

Thatā€™s very true. Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, U2, Pearl Jam etc are all doing just fine. Hell, even NKOTB are doing well. They might not be topping the charts, but Iā€™m sure they get that music is, in general, a young personā€™s game.. Acting makes much more sense. I also wish I understood ā€œMainesā€™ā€ psychology in general. Heā€™s at best apathetic to fame. He seems be done with it. But when his star is in decline heā€™s like, ā€œWelp, I canā€™t take a support position so I might as well end it.ā€

My vibe, not necessarily in terms of music style or personality, was he was, like, Eddie Vedder levels of famous. Pretty big and respected, but of the old guard. The thing is, I know of Eddie Vedder. If you showed me a picture of Eddie Vedder with Pearl Jam, Iā€™d be like, ā€œThatā€™s the guy.ā€ But if Eddie Vedder walked up to me on the street, I wouldnā€™t have a clue who he was. Iā€™m certain some people would, but not at the ā€œOMG youā€™re Jackson Maine!ā€ level depicted in the movie. I think there are very few musicians most people would know on sight. I donā€™t see Jackson Maine having the crossover appeal to become a household name/face.

I agree. I hate when movies try to sell us on couples who, like, never laugh or have a good time. I felt like Esther and Norman were in love. Aly and Jackson felt like they cared for each other, but I didnā€™t get that ā€œOoh, theyā€™re meant to beā€ feeling. If anything, I feel like Aly should be like, ā€œThank you for the opportunity, but I think we should just be friends.ā€ I mean, look at this mess: I appreciate you like my nose, but seriously, no, thank you.

Musical Mondays Week 63 A Star is Born (1937)

Thatā€™s right. I forgot about that. I mean, I agree that Gaga is the best part of the new one, but I just donā€™t think itā€™s as good as the world has been trying to convince me it is. ā€˜37 is a fine movie; 2018 feels like itā€™s trying too hard. And aside from ā€œShallow,ā€ none of the songs really did anything for me. Also, I found it incredibly hard to believe that this gross, sweaty dude singing crunchy country-rock is such a big deal that EVERYONE knows who he is. He would have his niche, but Iā€™m sure he can buy peas without being harassed.

This is very true. We get that itā€™s her fatherā€™s dream, but we never see Aly actually pursue it the way Esther does. Weā€™re just supposed to understand thatā€™s what Aly wants but that sheā€™s given up on it (I guess).

Musical Mondays Week 63 A Star is Born (1937)

I forgot about the pioneer thing! I've been kind of noticing older people in old movies a lot lately (if you get what I mean). Like if you see an 80 year old person in a movie from the 30's it's like, "Wow! They were alive during the Civil War!" So, yeah, I liked the pioneer thing. It makes you realize how close together these events - Westward Expansion and the Advent of Hollywood - actually were. That being said, I did have a bit of a chuckle when her grandmother said something like, "You being out here gave me something to live for. If you quit, I've got nothing." I was thinking, "Is she really saying, 'Do you want two deaths on your hands?'" lol
