  1. I said this in my review, but I found it so odd that the movie really didn’t seem to like Rock music. It seemed to either ignore it or outright dismiss it. NONE of the characters ever say they actually like it. In fact, one of the key moments is when Fats says, “Look at Eddie Cochran, he can’t sing for shit. She doesn’t need to be able to sing well. Kids are dumb.” And this is played out in the end with the teens jamming out to his shitty song at the end. I guess they were just trying to appeal to the largest audience possible. It was sort of a proto-MTV. The “plot” (such as it is) was for the adults and the musical numbers were for the kids.
  2. Don’t forget, she also likes to keep house and wants to make lots of babies Not that there’s anything wrong with her wanting any of that, but you’re right, it’s the fact the movie portrays her desires as being what constitutes a “perfect” woman that’s a bit icky. She essentially says, “Why would I want to do anything else when I can prepare boullion in bed for you and make you the perfect sandwich?”

    Episode 199.5 - Minisode 199.5

Get well soon, Paul! Since my eldest son started school this year, I think I’ve been sick more days than well. I feel your pain.

    Raiders of the Lost Ark

I think Raiders scratches so many different itches. It’s an Adventure/Paranormal/Romance/Mystery/Comedy. And somehow, it manages to feels both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. Something like The Fast And Furious movies - which I think are just fine - are more one note, and if you don’t dig that note, then you’re not going to feel the symphony. Also, the Fast movies - especially the earlier ones - already feel dated. Setting Raiders in the past allows it to feel more timeless.

    Raiders of the Lost Ark

That's why I didn't bother re-watching Raiders or Lord of the Rings. I probably won't bother re-watching Star Wars either. I love them all dearly, but I've seen them soooo many times and I feel completely talked out about them.
  6. I’m excited for this, Trip!

    Psycho

No, they don't, but I meant more in terms of Norman's psychological and emotional journey. Norman - or at least that part of his psyche - is essentially "Mother's" third and final victim. That shot, however brief, as the cars are pulled out of the the swamp (and as all secrets are laid bare), is the punctuation at the end of the movie. In the grand scheme of things, it's not really all that big of a deal. It just seems weird to me not to mention it. It's an interesting footnote if nothing else That being said, I'll try to refrain from commenting anymore until I've actually listened to the episode. I don't want to take anyone out of context. Psycho is a personal favorite of mine, and I guess I'm just surprised by the general apathy it's getting when a movie like the Sixth Sense seemed to get so much praise.

Episode 199 - A Night In Heaven: LIVE!

Hey, guys! My Internet has been down for over 24 hours so I haven’t had a chance to listen to the episode or watch the movie. I’m on a Halloween movie high right now, so watching this kind of breaks my groove. Is it worth it? Thanks in advance

    Psycho

They didn’t bring that up in the episode? Weird. I know I have to listen so I don’t have too much right to criticize, but just from what I’ve read, it feels like they missed quite a lot. Like, I guess they questioned why she took a shower after deciding to come clean and someone on Twitter had to explain that it was Marion literally washing away her sins. I mean, I don’t think Psycho is heavy-handed necessarily, but it’s not exactly that subtle. To assume she’s just taking a shower to take a shower is like assuming William Carlos Williams’ “This is Just to Say” is about plums or Moby Dick is a about a whale.

Man, ChunkStyle. First you ruin Real Genius for me and now you trash my favorite movie.

    Psycho

I totally agree! I feel like this is even represented visually how each act ends with a shot of Norman and a shot of the swamp - each successive shot showing Norman's descent and his mother's ascension. It starts with Norman in decent lighting nervously chewing on candy corn as he watches Marion's car sink: The next is after he's disposed of Arbosgast. It's more sinister and cast mostly in shadows: And finally in the police station when "mother" has completely taken over: I'm sorry, I still haven't listened to the ep yet so I'm not sure how much they get into all of this, but what I think it is important to remember that Norman is the protagonist - not Lila, Sam, Arbogast or even Marion. The movie is about his struggle, and ultimate failure, to break free from his mother. So, I don't think anything is filler. It's all needed to watch that struggle.

    Psycho

I haven't listened to it yet either, but while I was watching last night, even knowing the twist, I was struck by the tension. For example, when Lila is searching Bates' house while Sam distracts Norman, there was still this fear of "Will she get caught?" And the answer is: of course not. Norman is in the Motel with Sam. The only thing in the house is a corpse. But still, knowing that there was nothing in the house that could possible hurt or catch her, I felt this anxiety for her. It makes me sad to hear that the second half is being called "unmemorable." I love the second half just as much as the first.

Musical Mondays Week 49 Meet Me in St. Louis

Maybe. Honestly, even though suburbs weren’t really a “thing” at that time, they more or less live in one. I don’t actually think they’d live in a NYC tenement, but I do think they’d miss the freedom of having a house with a lawn. For instance, no Wicker Man-style bonfires at Halloween.

Musical Mondays Week 49 Meet Me in St. Louis

But someone, I think the mother, says something like, “I know St Louis is a big city too, but this is different.”
  16. In an effort to simplify things, I thought I'd start another thread for people to sign up for Musical Mondays. Musical Mondays--Rotation and Sign Up

That's cool It's totally chill. We get that life gets in the way, but as long as as people don't act like jerks (which, of course, none of us do), everyone is welcome to come and go as they please. No pressure whatsoever.

Musical Mondays Week 49 Meet Me in St. Louis

Just remember we try to stagger them from HDTGM. We discuss the week after a mini -episode and announce the week of a full episode. That way we have something to talk about between episodes. Also, you picked a good time to join up as we're approaching the end of this cycle. You should get your first pick pretty soon (And I've invited you to HDTGM Classics before, right?)

This week Amy & Paul unveil 1933’s seminal monster movie King Kong! They ask if this was the first true blockbuster film, discover how the distinctive animal sounds were made, and wonder what Ann sees in Jack Driscoll. Plus: primatologist Kate Gilmore stops by to explain King Kong is not a gorilla! What do you think All About Eve is all about? Is it ever explained how John got his hands on a tux or are we to assume that he had Tootie "take care of it?"

I also liked how when everyone is mad at Daddy Pricklepants they won’t eat any cake. Then, when he starts singing, they all cut themselves a ten-pound slice of apology cake.

I just wanted to say, my two favorite line reads were Lon’s “What?” when it’s suggested that he go to the dance with Rose, and Warren’s “I love you!” at the end.
