Musical Mondays Week 49 Meet Me in St. Louis
Cameron H. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
At the end of the movie, Tootie asks if it will ever be torn down and Daddy Pricklepants says, "They better not." But according to Dr. internet, most of the fair was built with plaster of Paris and was never meant to be permanent. The fair itself ended in 1905 and only a few buildings remained. This would have been pretty well-known on 1944. Is the movie making a statement about the transitory nature of joy? Also, I found this interesting: Introduction of new foods A number of foods are claimed to have been invented at the fair. The most popular claim is that the waffle-style ice cream cone was invented and first sold during the fair. However, it is widely believed that it was not invented at the Fair, but instead, it was popularized at the Fair.[39][40] Other claims are more dubious, including the hamburger and hot dog (both traditional American foods), peanut butter, iced tea,[41] and cotton candy. It is more likely, however, that these food items were first introduced to mass audiences and popularized by the fair. Dr Pepper and Puffed Wheat cereal were first introduced to a national audience at the fair. Daughter of slaves, Annie Fisher, brought her beaten biscuits, which were already famous in her hometown of Columbia, Missouri. The exposition awarded Fisher's biscuits a gold medal.[42]They would later be enjoyed by President William Howard Taft on his 1911 visit to Missouri. Also, the X-Ray, fax machine, and baby incubator debuted there. -

I kind of day her as an Anne of Green Gables type. She has a highly evolved Imagination and death is kind of "romantic." -

I love how he forget to pick up his tuxedo because he was basketballing so hard. No, no - it's fine. It's only Christmas and a very important event seeing as Esther is moving away forever. Did you get that Triple-double, though? -

Yeah, I think he said he was basically going to be made partner or something. And his argument is he wants to make enough money to support everyone so you have to imagine it's a pretty significant pay bump. I mean, they could just be acting dramatic, but I think his wife says it too, so I don't know... -

I also thought it weird that they were like, “We’re going to have to live in tenements because we’re so poor.” Um...I think you folks are doing alright for yourselves. -

I really liked the music in this, but one thing that kind of annoyed me is how - aside from “Have Yourself a Merry LittleChristmas” - none of them really had anything to do with the plot. Like, I liked the “Trolly Song,” (even if that trolly seemed to be going *real* fast), but it doesn’t really do anything other than confirm Esther loves John - which we already knew. The trolly doesn’t even really go anywhere. They board it, they sing, and then they’re back home. -

I think it was because she was pretty and can’t turn off lights. -

Yeah, that was weird. At one point, I was like, “Oh, so the father’s the antagonist?” I’m not saying you can’t do that, Mary Poppins does it very well, but MP also makes his redemption more of the focus. We see him grow as the movie progresses. In this, he sees his psycho daughter murder her snowpeople and thinks, “Maybe my family isn’t in to this thing...” and that’s pretty much it. They told you from the beginning they didn’t want to go, bro. -

I Googled “Meet Me in St. Louis Halloween” and a site called “Emma Rae’s Halloween” had this to say: Obviously Halloween wasn’t a widespread holiday in America until hoards of European immigrants began to spread across the country. Thanks to the Irish moving over due to the Irish Potato Famine, we have the tradition of the Jack-o-Lantern. As America moved into the 19th century, pranks were a popular tradition for Halloween; greasing doorknobs and jamming doorbells were some favorites. Unlike today, most of these pranks were tolerated. Another tradition that was popular but isn’t discussed much was portrayed in the 1944 film “Meet Me in St. Louis”, which takes place in 1903. A young child would try to seek revenge on a grumpy old man from the neighborhood by ringing the doorbell and throwing flour in the face of said grump. Often bonfires were built in celebration and masks were expected for most children, even if not in costume. -

I just want the say, I really enjoyed Meet Me in St. Louis. My only issue with it was the plot seemed rather light. It just sort of moved from one series of Holiday related skits to the next - moving from one party to the next. The primary conflict for 2/3 of the movie was basically, “Will we get married?” And while I get why that would have been a big deal at the time, I don’t feel like the movie conveyed *why* it was such a big deal. I wonder if it’s because societal norms and pressures hadn’t changed all *that* much since 1944 so they knew the audience would just “get it.” For me, however, in the year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Eighteen, I’m like, “You’re 21, woman! You’re young enough to not worry about marriage and old enough to not have to move to NYC if you don’t want to!” -

To the question, “Is LotR a War Movie?” I would say, no, since the movie isn’t about a war but about preventing one (if that makes sense). As impressive as the battle scenes can be (particularly in the 2nd and 3rd movies) the battles aren’t about tactics or strategy, they are mostly about being under siege. In fact, the only time the good guys ever bring the fight to Sauron (in RotK) it is only done as a diversionary measure to buy Frodo and Sam time. They are essentially saying, “We’re willing to die so there *won’t* be war.” -

That’s funny. I met a woman today who said she had eight kids. Jesus, I have two, but I swear to God sometimes I feel like I have thirty kids living in my house...

My wife told me it was because I was kind and wise, but analytical to the point of stagnation and full of self-doubt. I told her she was Boromir. She was upset at first, but I explained it’s because she’s brave, caring, and would die defending the ones she cares about, but she would 100% be corrupted by the ring out of a desire to do good. She thought about it for a second and was like, “You’re totally right.” Lol (It’s also worth mentioning that I’m a Ravenclaw and she’s a Slytherin )
