Oh ho! Should I tell you what it is so you can make one of those announcement threads? Not sure what the process is. Also I'd better check and see if anyone has already done it and if it is available anywhere... -
Musical Mondays Week 69 High Society

At the risk of being another white man explaining jazz, Satchmo is a nickname that Armstrong didn't care for. His preferred nickname was and still is Pops. (I mean, he is dead obviously, but jazz fans call him Pops, or, you know. His name.) Fun fact, Sinatra and Crosby were both terrible people who liked to beat their wives and kids, so I wouldn't feel too bad about it. Pretty much all of Audrey's early films have this dynamic. She wasn't thrilled about it according to her biographer but it was how Hollywood rolled. Check out later stuff like Two for the Road or Robin and Marian for some more realistic(ish) relationships. I do love Funny Face, but mainly for Audrey and Kay Howard, who is amazing. And I quite enjoy Paris When it Sizzles, which re-teamed her with her ex-lover William Holden in a more mature kind of relationship, and has a hilarious running gag with Tony Curtis making fun of Marlon Brando. (Edited to add: it occurs to me now that maybe the main thing I love about these films is Paris.) -
The Spirit (2008)
theworstbuddhist replied to royaldutchofdukes's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
Suits is not a great show but Macht was (is?) perfect for it. As an actor it's easily his best work as far as I have seen. The Spirit film was so disappointing for me as an Eisner fan. Especially after Sin City; I figured that Miller probably shadowed Robert Rodriguez and wanted to take the same approach, essentially using the memorable layouts from the original comics. There are recognizable elements in the film, and the old comics certainly had their share of goofy shit that hasn't aged well, but the old comics were also usually no longer than 8 pages. Adapting comics that have such a distinctive tone and art style - especially by artists like Eisner, Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), or David Lloyd (V for Vendetta) - is perilous. None of those films are in the same league as the books that inspired them. Perhaps they would have been better served through animation. Or perhaps just not being filmed at all. Fun(?) fact, one of Eisner's many assistants/ghosts on the old Spirit comics was Jules Feiffer, a fine cartoonist in his own right and the screenwriter of the Popeye film, which is another terrible adaptation of a classic newspaper comic with pretty big stars. -
I remember when I was a kid, visiting my grandmother's house and looking through some of her old Reader's Digest Condensed Books. One of them was Jaws or a sequel to Jaws, and while I can't guarantee this is accurate at all, I have either a memory of a fever dream of reading a scene in that book from the shark's point of view, and it does indeed want revenge for the death of its babies. And sharks can smell pretty well I guess? The implication was that the shark somehow imprinted on its nemesis like a werewolf with a vampire baby.

That looks like a Biorhythm machine!

That's an amazing story. And a little depressing to know that even in the old analog days, 3D films were also projecting too dark. It drives me nuts.

This was in my head all through that exchange:

Is Ian Zeiring's character from the Sharknado films the son of Dennis Quaid? Does this family have some kind of superpower that enables them to attract great white sharks? And IF SO: Is Dennis Quaid the original Aquaman? Are the sharks in the Jaws film simply trying to communicate with their leader?

Fun episode, but honestly the part I enjoyed the most was the discussion at the end about Jason's fanny pack. It was nice to hear just the three of them in studio joking around.

Yeah, they are doing it at Just For Laughs in Montreal. I wish I could go, I would take my old VHS of Megaforce with me.

Episode 216.5 - Minisode 216.5

It's on Netflix here in Canada (the regular version, not "3D") so last night I got high and started watching it with my red/blue 3D glasses from the DVD of My Bloody Valentine 3D. It still works pretty well, insofar as anything in the film does. What breaks my heart a little bit about this movie is that the great Richard Matheson devoted even a minute of his time to the screenplay. But, that is how he rolled. -

It is so so bad. I rewatched all of the Jaws films last year for some reason and Jaws 3 is a classic SCTV Dr. Tongue's House of Beef kind of movie. -
Late to the game, but all caught up.

Good lord. Did you watch all the movies too? Either way, you deserve the highest honour that John can award: a DVD of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Congratulations. -
I'm watching this on Netflix now. I'm only about thirty minutes in, but I feel confident that this is a film that the gang could really have some fun with. It's like a Reddit fever dream.

I know a dude who likes to make mead infused with magic mushrooms. He's an interesting person. -
I am furious with envy at what a great idea this is. Anyway, I was a huge Magnum fan growing up (and I still love the show, including the new one) and my wife fucking loves MSW so yes, we will be listening.

SSIG looks like the star of a 70s production of Valerian. Which, for all I know, exists. Or, like, Barbarella. The reptile guy looks like Michael Chiklis! -
Double Impact (1991)

I have nothing to add, this just made me laugh very hard. Sometimes I'm tempted to do a rewatch of all the classic JCVD and Steven Seagal movies, but man. I don't know if I really want to do that. -
We saw this yesterday, and it was fun, especially to see Jason. I gotta say as a moviegoer, I couldn't care less about the mythology of John Wick, its weird currency system and honor code. I feel like at this point that stuff is getting in the way of the only good thing about these movies, which is seeing Keanu kill everyone on screen with a bullet to the chest and one to the head. I did appreciate that unlike Skyscraper, JW3's version of the Enter The Dragon mirror room added some new (and cool) elements to that much-imitated scene.

Should you be watching Star Crash? No. But there is a young Hasselhoff in it, and he would probably be a guest. -
EPISODE 106 — Deep Blue Sea: LIVE!

It's a comedy thriller I guess? Not many traditional thrillers button their action sequences with lines like "you ate my bird", sadly. Also, I love that SLJ and Brie Larson are buds.
