Musical Mondays Week 100 Light of Day

Sorry to hear this, as apparently the romantic lead for Justine Bateman in this film was Liam Neeson! and it's also got an early appearance of Julia Roberts.

Episode 247.5: Prequel to Episode 248

I didn't wind up finishing the movie yet, but that note for the insert was funny. So far it reminds me of a Ti West movie with more humour and a dumber central idea. I did play some RDR2 and learned how to hunt. Hard to say if it will become the kind of time-killing exercise for me like its sister game Grand Theft Auto V, where I enjoy jumping in the back of a train and trolling police helicopters to see how long I can get and keep a 5-star wanted rating while being carried around the city.

Episode 247.5: Prequel to Episode 248

I'm about 15 minutes in to Velocipastor and oof, for a 70 minute movie this already feels pretty long. I'll probably get high and finish it tonight. Anyone else have long weekend plans? If you have a PS4 and haven't picked it up already, there is a big sale on one of the editions of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is apparently how Jason spends a lot of his time these days according to his appearance on How Did This Get Played?

Oh, also wanted to mention for my fellow comics fans and because I know Jason is a big fan of my fellow comics makers Kris Bertin and Andrew Forbes (creators of the Hobtown Mysteries series) here in Nova Scotia, they have a short piece in a new anthology from their publisher, Conundrum press. The new book is called Nova Graphica and it's a collection of short tales about the region by local cartoonists.

Episode 247.5: Prequel to Episode 248

Congrats to this week's winner, I won't spoil that here but I will reveal that next week's movie is called Velocipastor and it's about a priest who becomes a dinosaur? I guess? Anyway, I noticed the other day on social media that Stitcher is doing a big promo for their premium service where it's something like $21 a year, so if that interests you, now you know. Paul also officially gave notice on the mini episode that there will be a pay per view charity episode of HDTGM where they do Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, with the $5 proceeds going to a charity that tries to get out the vote in the US. You can also sign up to be a poll worker, which I understand is an issue in the upcoming US election, so speaking as a nervous foreigner watching all this from afar, I encourage my American friends to do whatever they safely can to contribute to that effort. Think of it this way: if the Koch brothers and Putin have their way, the only movies we'll ever get to watch is Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

    Episode 246 - Swordfish: LIVE!

I don't think we are really meant to like Rob considering how shitty he is to everyone in his past and present. I call this kind of movie the "coming of middle age" film, where a guy in his thirties (more or less) grows up just enough to make an important change in his life.

    Episode 246 - Swordfish: LIVE!

I just watched that remake of Death Wish and while I would say I enjoyed it more than the original, which wouldn't be hard, it is certainly not great. It felt like Willis was perplexed in the same way the audience was about why this film was being remade in 2020. It's yet another film (after that weird revenge-against-women picture he did with Keanu Reeves) where I wonder what the hell Eli Roth is thinking these days. Willis is frustrating. He has been in some really good indie/nontraditional action films like 12 Monkeys and Unbreakable and obviously he enjoys being this generation's John Wayne when the script calls for an elder statesman figure. Otherwise he seems to be caught up in his generation's straight-to-streaming crapshoot along with people like Pierce Brosnan.

    Episode 246 - Swordfish: LIVE!

Yeah, it's been sad to see a guy who seemed so promising basically become the role he played in High Fidelity, which is his last good movie by my reckoning. I loved Better Off Dead and Say Anything... too, and liked the stuff he was doing with his pals Tim Robbins and Jack Black, like Tapeheads and Bob Roberts (and, I guess, High Fidelity again). Somewhere along the line he probably should have fired his agent, because unlike his sister Joan who has made a good career out of wacky character roles, John seems to have spent the last ~20 years wobbling between roguish leading man in forgettable romcoms and sinister bad guy in forgettable action films.

    Trailer Talk

I just finished watching it and while I wouldn't say it is better than the first film, it isn't really any worse. It is VERY low budget, made in South Africa apparently, but the script is surprisingly strong and I actually found myself giving a shit about some of the characters and what happens to them. There are even a couple of pleasant surprises. I literally don't remember anything about the second one and I only saw it a month or two ago.

    The Dark Backward (1991)

And based on a novel, if memory serves. I think the main way it got greenlit was that Twin Peaks and David Lynch were popular and some studios were looking for aggressively weird pictures. Which they certainly got with this one, but my memory of it is that it tried too hard and was just pretty dull in the end.

Attention movie lovers, there is now a Deep Blue Sea 3 available for rent or (snicker) purchase. Stars the lady who played Alex (Ben's daughter) on Lost. I will probably get high and watch it tonight, not gonna lie.

Musical Mondays Week 98 Stop Making Sense

Yeah, if you ever heard Tom Tom Club or Casual Gods, it becomes apparent pretty quickly who was the driving genius behind Talking Heads. Not that the other musicians were bad by any means, but.

Musical Mondays Week 98 Stop Making Sense

Haven't seen this film in a long time but I really should make the effort. Demme was arguably as great a director of concert films and music videos as he was of feature films. He also directed a concert film of one of my favourite musicians, Robyn Hitchcock, called Storefront.

    Episode 245.5 - Prequel to Episode 246

Honestly, there are probably some directors out there making purposefully bad or inept movies in the hopes of getting the attention of a podcast like HDTGM and gathering a cult following, or even the kind of streaming bump that being on the podcast would have.

    PCU (1994)

I'm kind of shocked that this movie was not already recommended. It's got: Jeremy Piven as a college senior, looking at least 35 already Young Jon Favreau in dreadlocks Jessica Walter as the politically correct head of the university David Spade as the preppie villain and head of the evil frat Balls & Shaft George Clinton and Parliament at a dorm party Jake Busey as a stoner who plays in an ultimate frisbee league Cowritten by Zak Penn (Last Action Hero, X2 and X3, Ready Player One) Directed by Torontonian actor Hart Bochner, and filmed at U of T It's basically a 90s update of Animal House with warring factions of politically correct students, all of whom hate "The Pit", a bunch of stoners and general misfits whose fraternity is going to be closed if they don't raise enough funds blah blah. It's not aging well, and it wasn't exactly aging well even in 1994, but Piven's manic cokehead energy and the supporting cast and some truly random moments give it a soft spot in my head. I mean heart. Anyway, here is the trailer.
  23. Paul gives advice about working out! Jason and Paul talk about how they love Dave Filoni and Gennedy Tarkovsky and Deadwood and crazy old David Milch! @GrahamS. wins with his C&O about My Demon Lover! Plus next week's movie.

"Back off, cock-man-oppressor!" I also love the flashback of how Piven was Spade's awful freshman roommate.
