Hellboy (2019)

Recommended Posts

Boy talk about a misfire. This was odd from the opening shot to the end credits, with them clearly keying up the gore and language in comparison to the superior del Toro movies. DavidThe  Harbour does an okay job as Hellboy, but after Ron Perlman's superb and funny take on the character, Harbour is too dry and really can't sell the jokes and one-liners. It's also weird seeing how they changed the appearance of the character, who now has long stringy hair and a thick line of chest hair that runs directly up the middle of his chest, as if they are using it to cover the zipper on his costume. The story is nonsensical with use of King Arthur and Excalibur major parts of the plot.  Unfortunately that emphasis takes away from a really great segment of the film that includes utterly terrifying Lovecraftian monsters tearing through London, which really should have been the focal point of the film. There are a bunch of tweaks made to the character's origin story, basically taking the opening of the original film and condensing it to a three minute scene in order to introduce a fan-known character that's seen one time during the main movie and making all of the villains from the original film basically set trimmings as if saying "yeah our villain is WAY worse than these lame-os."

It's unfortunate that this is Millenium Entertainment's first big budget theatrical release as it appears that they were swinging for the fences with it but they completely missed the mark, which is unfortunate given that there are some really well done scenes that should have been expanded upon rather than what was the actual focus. It's definitely one for the show because I was laughing at how bad various things, which isn't surprising given the news that this movie was apparently a total clusterfuck to create in the first place.
