Because I Said So

Non stop Diane Keaton slapstick. An embarrassing and regretful performance punctuated with a few musical numbers! Mandy Moore has never been less likable, nor the men she dates more forgettable. I only saw the last hour or so of this movie and I saw three cakes get comically destroyed.

Have cakes ever been destroyed in a movie for DRAMATIC effect? The only instance I can think of is that scene in "What's Love Got To Do With it?", but even that was kind of funny in an "Oh, Ike! What WON'T you do to humiliate your wife?" kind of way...

I remember being sort of tempted to watch this years ago upon hearing that at one point, someone who's lost her voice hands someone else a card with something like "There's turkey in the fridge. What does an orgasm feel like?" (Probably not correct, since again, it's been years since I read this.) Browsing through the IMDb quotes does come up with some equally jaw-dropping lines, though; I imagine there's no possible context where the line "You have a vagina!" isn't a non sequitur.

Also, reflect upon the fact that this is directed by Michael Lehmann, whose first movie was "Heathers." Poor guy just killed his own career by directing "Hudson Hawk."

Whatever dudes. This is standard romantic comedy faire and there's nothing extra bad about this movie compared to any others...

See? Mandy Moore gets a balloon stuck to her butt..

But the sensitive, handsome guy with a son still thinks she's adorable.

...I own every single movie Mandy Moore has ever been in. There I said it.

Sue me.

I think she's a decent actress, but she ends up in some pretty bad movies. Oh jeez, I remember getting dragged to "How to Deal". I specifically recall a part towards the end where this girl goes into labor at a wedding (or on the way to a wedding or something), and then later, there's a scene where everyone's at the hospital looking at the baby, and they're all wearing what they were wearing at the wedding! Like, it must be a good day or 2 later and people are still in tuxes and wedding dresses and everything! Bonkers at around the 11 minute mark...

Just to give you an idea of this movie's idea of humor,

at one point Dian Keaton searches for a dating site on the internet and brings up a porn site movie by mistake. Its volume shakes the walls and she "hilariously" can't figure out how to turn it off or turn it down, then her dog starts humping furniture at the sound of two humans fucking I guess.

....yeah

I feel like this Mandy Moore/Diane Keaton turd was overlooked because it landed the same year as "I Know Who Killed Me". Well, "Because I Said So" is bad. Really bad. Just look at how they marketed the film. I went to it with a date, and even she thought it was a wretched film. Based on audience research mentioned on the Wikipedia page, I was in a small minority of men attending.

5% on Rotten Tomatoes for this garbage is being generous.

Trailer:

https://en.wikipedia..._Said_So_(film)

"The movie focuses on Daphne (Diane Keaton), the loving but over-bearing mother of three girls, in particular Milly (Mandy Moore). Her other daughters Maggie (Lauren Graham) and Mae (Piper Perabo) are happily married but Milly has recently broken up with her boyfriend, and Daphne is concerned.

Daphne fears that her daughter cannot find a good man on her own so she secretly places a personal ad for her daughter. She finds a potential candidate, Jason (Tom Everett Scott), and tries to orchestrate a chance meeting of the two. The plan seems flawless until Milly finds her own date, guitarist Johnny (Gabriel Macht), who happens to be a candidate Daphne rejected before. Milly is unaware of her mother's scheming and begins relationships with both Jason and Johnny at the same time, with neither aware of the other.

Inevitably, this double-dating takes its toll and Milly becomes estranged from both Jason and Johnny. In Jason's case, it is because she discovers Daphne's scheming. Meanwhile, Daphne stumbles upon her own perfect match after being alone for many years and begins to challenge her search for the perfect match for Milly. Milly also realizes she has a choice to be the daughter her mother wants her to be, or to be the woman she wants herself to be. Choosing the latter, which comes with a row with her mother, leads her to reconcile with Johnny, a relationship Daphne has realized she should have tried to orchestrate in the first place."
