Musical Mondays Week 69 High Society

I agree that it didn't feel like a Cole Porter musical (except for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (sic)). My only other immersion is with Kiss Me Kate. Those songs pop and these are languorous.

Musical Mondays Week 69 High Society

Well, I just learned something. I thought the closed captioners had messed up. Shortly after the opening Louis is referred to in the captions as "satchel mouth". I thought I had heard "Satchmo" on the audio so I figured the captioners were wrong. (It's happened once or twice before. ;-)) Nope! "Satchmo" is a shortening of "satchel mouth", a reference to Louis' wide mouth when playing the trumpet. I remember Dizzy Gillespie's cheeks. I didn't know other performers had unusual characteristics. (Honestly, until the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, I never thought of Freddie Mercury as having an odd mouth. I just knew he had extended range but didn't know the mouth made that happen.)

I don't want to say too much but I liked it overall. I had never seen Louis Armstrong as a young man and he's in full effect here. I don't think it's a spoiler to post the opening of the movie but it was charming.

You know how screenwriting 101 says "Don't tell it, show it."? Well this movie doesn't show it, the movie tells it AND sings it! We watched
  5. I started watching this morning. Iā€™m 30 minutes in and the Overture just finished!
  6. Thanks. My friend in Wales thought of that for me from his past experience. I've been sending him money with each paycheck to bank for my trip. That way I dollar-cost average the exchange rate and don't have to carry a lot of cash when I travel. After my September trip I will keep doing that to save up for a larger trip in the future.
  7. My Rabbit room is open. I will keep it open until 9:30 if no one comes in. Watch with me on Rabbit! https://www.rabb.it/s/w490j4
  8. Can I please ask some advice? The tour comes to Philly on the 23rd but money is tight. I've wanted to go to a live show and almost went to NYC or DC. Now they're in my backyard! Should I make every effort to go because just being there is awesome or is it OK to skip and get my finances and life in better order?
  9. I would be willing to host a Rabbit showing tonight of High Anxiety, I mean, High Society at 9 p.m. Eastern. I have a volunteer thing until around 8 but should be home in plenty of time.
  10. Alternate title: "Hello (Grace) Kelly"
  11. Umm, I already picked Reefer Madness. Do we need another movie about the dangers of marijuana?
  12. Unfortunately Rabbit doesn't seem able to stream physical copies drat it.

Musical Mondays Week 69 Girls! Girls! Girls!

Apologies. I just checked the site and saw this post. I went to Michigan for a Celebration of Life party on Friday. My sister's boyfriend passed away on June 2nd. He didn't want a burial or funeral so he was cremated and we remembered him on Friday night. I just got back home a couple hours ago. Still in culture shock from being in Michigan at 10 a.m. and pulling in to my Delaware apartment before 9 p.m.

I'll be off traveling for the rest of the week but hope to be here with bells on for gigi-tasic's pick on Monday! Have a great Fourth of July.

Are we referring to the song sung in Chinese with Mai and Tai?

OK, let's play Six Degrees of Separation. This technically isn't that but still... I have Elvis' movie Love a Little, Live a Little (1968) in my list of possibilities because of Michele Carey. She has a big role in El Dorado, one of my favorite Westerns. Looking at her IMDB page it turns out she just passed away in November, on the exact release date of Girls! Girls! Girls!. I'm very sad I didn't hear about her passing at the time.

Musical Mondays Week 69 Girls! Girls! Girls!

I just saw Robin call Ross Sir Galahad. It reminded me of Elvis' movie Kid Galahad. I wondered if one led to the other. Turns out Kid Galahad was also released in 1962, three months before this movie! Not only that but this movie is the THIRD Elvis movie released in 1962! Previously he had done at most one movie a year up to 1961. He did two in 1961 and then ramped up the movies. No wonder he needed the Comeback Special in 1968.

I don't remember the song with the two girls. Watching the movie again and I'll comment after.

Musical Mondays Week 69 Girls! Girls! Girls!

I was surprised when Ross and Laurel go to Paradise Cove and the lady of the house calls out that Ross and Robin are there. Maybe it's me but Robin seemed too sour to want to go to a place like that and just hang out. I know we only meet her for a little while and she seems to make her peace with Laurel over Ross but I don't see her being as lacksadaisical as Laurel was as the guest.

Dehumidifier would be cheaper. I just think they sold to get Ross moving and stop waiting around for the right chance.

Serious question: We're Comin' in Loaded isn't the tuna song? What are they pulling in then?
