Musical Mondays Week 48 School Daze
Cinco DeNio replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Spike Lee's dad, Bill, wrote the music for the film. He also wrote the song Phyllis Hyman sings during the Homecoming dance. -

It turns out he's in Trading Places as well, in a bit part. -

Unfortunately yes. Bing Image Search says this is from Breaking Bad. I never saw the series. I was hoping he was in The Wire because his talking style in School Daze closely matched Brother Mouzone in The Wire. Alas it's not him. -

I didn't know about Apocalypse Now. Very cool! I thought I recognized Julian from somewhere but it turns out The Usual Suspects is the only movie I remember him from. The administration "toady" helps Bruce Willis in Die Hard 2. -

With the stepping "competition" at Homecoming, were the same dances done year after year or did they change each time? Also, Wikipedia says the fight was unstaged and real. Spike kept the actors apart (a la Animal House) during filming so their animosity was somewhat genuine. -

That makes sense. I figured since Dap was able to approach Julian from time to time on Half-Pint's behalf that said they weren't really the mortal enemies they are portrayed as. I just didn't see how Dap yelling "Wake Up" brought everyone together. -

I was the other way. I liked the musical numbers and wished there were more of them. I turned it off at the start of the football game and came back to it later. It picked up then but still was all too slow for my liking. I didn't get that it all took place over one weekend. The Homecoming section, sure. It felt like everything up to that was far earlier. Also they never resolved the South Africa stuff and that would have given more weight to the Wake Up scene. I mean, that was his big idea? And now he and Julian were best buds? -

Gerard Butler has a new one that looks prime for the HDTGM treatment.

Musical Mondays Week 47 Stage Fright

This was Meatloaf's chance to be the murderer instead of the murder victim. -

Seconded. These kinds of movies are as much fun to go through as "good" ones. -

One other thing that bothered me was the murderer's choice of weapons. It looked like he took paint can lids and cut them to make the blades (or attached blades). I was expecting him to use something more related to the show. Even in the Kabuki version there were no bladed weapons. -

When Meatloaf takes the kids out of Minnie Driver's dressing room he says "Should I take the twins?". -

I just had another thought about the ages. If the twins were not old enough for independence then who were they going to get shipped off to now? If they WERE old enough, why did they stay at the camp and work as slaves?!?! -

The janitor was nothing but a red herring. I thought he was going to be the one to save the day at the end instead of the kid who inexplicably figured everything out and was somehow in love with the girl from the beginning. He'd been around long enough that he had to have seen her in previous years, didn't he? -

Did Meatloaf sing his big "I had this idea" song at the beginning of each camp season? If so did he change the lyrics? Otherwise (paraphrasing) "Everyone laughed at me but look at this success story" sounds silly at Year 2. -

That adds to my question about how the camp works. How did Meatloaf get guardianship in the first place? Also that means the sister and brother grew up at the camp or at least had to spend each summer there. In a normal camp (even one like Meatballs) they would be running the place by then, not stuck in the kitchen.
