Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

That darn Jacques Demy infects everything. We've now done three of "his" musicals: Umbrellas of Cherbourg, La La Land and Hello, Dolly!. From Hello, Dolly! is still looking swell on the big screen

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

He seemed to get along with Michael alright. Years ago I remember reading or hearing an interview with Michael where he said Gene would call him up in the evening. Gene would then drive for one or more hours to Michael's house just to go over an idea Gene had for a dance step!

I missed part of the copy-and-paste. Here's the full part (just for completeness).

What do you think they were doing while Barnaby was looking at the whale?

Reminds me of Russell Crowe in Les Miserables. Not "bad" but not a real singer.

Found this on Michael Crawford's IMDB page: (I never knew Michael's original last-name was Dumbell-Smith. Still scanning the page to see if it explains where he picked Crawford from.)

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

I reflexively was ready to disagree with you about 'Leave Everything to Me' because I would have hated the movie if it hadn't started with that song. Without that song there wouldn't be any energy for you to be bowled over by. On reflection though I can agree it's unnecessary if Dolly isn't the focus. If they had kept the movie closer to the stage show the song would have been out of place. I can completely agree about 'Love is Only Love'. That dragged the movie down for me.

I looked Carol up. She was 42 or 43 when she played Dolly on stage. (She had also played Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes on stage so she was known before Dolly. I was mistaken.) Michael Crawford seems really young but he was 26 or 27 when playing Cornelius. I thought maybe Gene Kelly had a knack for flip-flopping ages but I guess not.

Is the stage musical different? It made Carol Channing a legend and is still her signature role. I'm curious how old she was when she started playing Dolly.

So his name changes to Horace Vandergelded.

Not to mention his first name is Horace (sounds like horse) and Gelder is the last part of his name. Gelding a horse is not a happy process. It's almost like the end of the movie is a gelded horse finding his mojo again.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang would back your theory up. Written by Ian Fleming, a World War Two soldier but born in 1908.
14. Sorry all. Am still on vacation but wanted to check what the movie was. Good choice! I've seen it a couple times and will be ready to discuss on Monday.

We could watch Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.

To add on, how was she ever expecting to pay the theater back even if that one night had been a success? It didn't look sufficient to cover her costs from the ticket revenue.

Musical Mondays Week 40 La La Land

I know it's not related to the film but I listen to a lot of sports radio. It always frosts me whenever the hosts berate the public for not showing up to a losing team's games. Like we're obligated to pay our hard-earned money to watch multi-millionaires lose just because they exist?!?!?! Ridiculous!

Musical Mondays Week 40 La La Land

If the poster is accurate it really was supposed to be one night only. Blows my theory out of the water.

Musical Mondays Week 40 La La Land

Is "City of Stars" figurative? I had the thought before rewatching the movie that maybe it meant the Hollywood stars instead of literal stars. Then I rewatched it and threw that out. Now I don't know...
