Musical Mondays Week 40 La La Land

Crap. I brought the thread to a halt. That wasn't my intention. However I didn't know Damien Chazelle had made a movie before Whiplash.

Apologies. I will try and make my ramblings clearer in the future. :-)

A commercial for Blue Apron? Sorry for the double post.

Maybe John Legend is helping? I also wondered how long Seb was going to be able to keep it. He even joked that the one piano player was better than him. WTH?!?!

I thought it was supposed to be more than one night but she was so put off by the lackluster response that she quit then and there.

Thank you! That was throwing me off because I didn't remember any big numbers in Umbrellas either.

Speaking of Umbrellas of Cherbourg, it supposedly influenced one of the big dance numbers but I can't tell which one. Is that correct or am I misinterpreting?

Musical Mondays Week 40 La La Land

I vote for keeping Another Day of Sun but it also changed my expectations of what was to come. Someone in the Crowd also pumped up the energy but then the air went out of the balloon. I would have liked to seen more of Mia's struggles and then bring in Someone in the Crowd as her roommates' last-ditch effort to keep her going and off the bus to Boulder City. It seems like Another Day of Sun was done in maybe one or two long takes. The only place I can see for an edit was after the band plays in the van. The camera does a quick whip-around and the skateboarder drops and starts going around the cars. If so that's quite impressive.
  10. I have a question unrelated to this week's pick. I found out Roger Daltrey is touring and performing Tommy. He's coming to Philadelphia in a couple weeks. I've never listened to the original record. Is it weird to hear a "rock opera" with various characters but all performed by the same one or two singers? It seems like I would have trouble distinguishing whoever is supposed to be speaking at the time. "You Never Heard It" would be one example.
  11. Agree wholeheartedly. That's an amazing musical number.
  12. I saw this in the theaters last year as part of a Best Picture festival. Didn't like it at first but knew I would be in the minority. Bought the Blu-Ray/DVD/digital package for $8.99 on Black Friday knowing someone would pick it. Thanks! (It will also be interesting to compare/contrast with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Supposedly La La Land has a big sequence inspired by Umbrellas but I can't recall it right now.)

Musical Mondays Week 39 Josie and the Pussycats

I'm a couple months away from my pick but am zeroing in on a couple. Unfortunately my main pick is really only available on Netflix in the US. (Not sure if it's easier for CamBert and others.) Would that be OK or do I need to pick something more widely available? People seemed to be OK with Om Shanti Om so I'm hopeful.

Thanks for the pick Taylor! I went ahead and bought it streaming since it was the cost of two rentals. Will probably start buying the picks where practical. I've often wanted to watch the pick again just to catch more as people discuss but frequent renting gets costly. :-)

The produced track sounded to me exactly like the sound from their bowling alley performance.

I was thinking of Sarah Hyland's character where she was frumpy and good-natured throughout the movie then became a monster when she got dolled up for the prom.

Did Fiona have her bedroom decked out with a bunch of "guy" things at DuJour's party? Did she take them in and try to bond like she did with J&TP?

Vampire Academy ETA: Scratch that. I misread the quote.

Did they break up because he tried to kill her with a baseball bat? Also, who was on the cardboard stand-in Tara was holding? I thought it was Matt Damon but later they made a comment about Heath Ledger being a young Matt Damon.
