  1. Why are we watching a movie about an aging male golfer?
  2. If you want a movie about child prostitution with VERY little singing and/or dancing you could always watch Pretty Baby (with Brooke Shields) or Taxi Driver (with Jodie Foster).
  3. And are already plotting my murder. At the last stop I came back and they were both on the driver's seat. (At each stop I would take them out of the carrier, put some water in a dish on the passenger-side floor and let them play while I went in.)
  4. Now that I stop and think about it I get the squickiness. I accidentally signed up for the full year of Amazon Prime so I was watching some candidates for my next pick. One of them was Lil' Abner. I used to think it was charming but now it's sexist as hell. I had to turn it off when two characters talked about a girl, who couldn't be more than 13, as able to be married this year as soon as her divorce is final. I know nothing sinister was meant but it didn't make the girl or the characters look good.
  5. Thanks! I wasn't expecting to come back with kitties when I went to Michigan on Thursday. Got there and found out my niece had taken in a stray, not knowing the stray was pregnant. The cat had 8 kittens and my niece has found homes for 4. She can only keep the mom so the kittens have to go and my niece is trying like crazy to avoid taking them to a shelter.
  6. Here's the Marx Brothers scene. http://www.dailymoti...om/video/x7clor
  7. I took this at the first stop. It's the clearest picture of both. Johann already had the "Puny human, why is my dish empty?" look down pat.
  8. I am looking forward to this because I keep thinking Louis Jourdan is Maurice Chevalier. When I hear "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" the tape in my head sounds an awful lot like "If A Nightingale Could Sing LIke You" from the Marx Brothers' Monkey Business. (They keep lipsyncing to a hidden Chevalier record in order to prove they are him and can get off the boat.) Time to finally put the Chevalier/Jourdan deathmatch to bed.
  9. Thanks! I'm Deee-Lited!
  10. I don't know what to say when a clean, non-CG movie like Gigi is the squickiest one. I just like the juxtaposition. I'd be happy to loan you my copy of Repo! if you need to cleanse the palate and get back to normal.
  11. OK, what is it with 4-letter female names that repeat the first 2 letters? We had Bibi in The Apple, Mimi in Rent and now Gigi!
  12. I am excited! You saved me from picking Irma La Douce. Seriously, I have never seen Gigi so I am looking forward to it!
  13. I had a fantastic vacation! It was also my birthday on Sunday and it was the best birthday ever! I adopted two kittens from my niece's cat. Never been a cat owner before and it's already been an adventure. Thanks to the training my niece and older sister gave all the kittens my two took the 11-hour car ride (from Michigan to Delaware) in stride and adjusted quickly to my apartment. Meet Johann and Sebastian I also weighed yesterday and I was at 399.0! I haven't been under 400 in well over a year.

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

I am heading off for a few days' vacation so I will step out with a couple last WTFs from The Lure. (Great pick Fister! This is one movie I got a lot out of.) 1) In the shopping scene it seemed like Kinga was a mega-star. She pushed through the crowds at the store entrance and all the clerks came flocking like she had Richard Gere's credit card from Pretty Woman. Yet the rest of the movie she's listless and barely able to go through a day, coming to life only when she's on the stage. 2) The songs in general I had a problem with but I admit it's my own pet peeve, not necessarily based in reality. I don't care that the songs didn't really rhyme in English since they're written in Polish. Yet they didn't seem to rhyme or make much sense in Polish either. I read that some of the songs were hit songs in Poland that the movie used to "lure" in audiences. I just didn't see the songs being very "singable" I guess. 3) Semi-related to #2: WhyTF were Matiek and his bride singing the gloom and doom song at their wedding? How did they even know about it? I thought Golden (maybe Silver) sang it to herself at one point. Don't remember anyone noticing it at the time nor the song resurfacing until the wedding. 4) Why did Silver and Golden stop eating the guy along the riverbank? It's like they each got a piece, took a bite or two then were like "I just remembered. I hate liver!" and put it back down. Anyway, thanks as always for letting me pop in once in a while and sharing these movies with me! See you next week. Cinco

Darn you! I was trying to work out a Kinga Forrester joke. Closest I came was "Wow. Felicia Day has really let herself go."

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

I thought Mietek was the one receiving the blow job and that's why Silver was so upset when she peeked through the key hole. Hopefully that wouldn't be happening if Kinga and Mietek were mother and son. (I just re-read your comment and missed that KInga was using the girls as surrogate daughters. That raises a couple thoughts for me. 1) She may have been trying to treat Mietek as a son but moved on once "younger, prettier" options came along. She could take the girls shopping which she couldn't do with Mietek. 2) Maybe once the girls came along she stopped trying with Mietek and maybe was trying to win him as a lover to replace the "father", hence the blow job.) I also thought they just lived together because it was a lot cheaper and they weren't making much money. The older folks were together for "security" (or inertia) but there was no love between them. (See my #2 comment above as to what was maybe going on.) I also love how we're referring to Kinga's character by the actress' name but every one else we're using the character names. It's cool. I couldn't type Wokalistka Krysia a bunch either. It seems to me like Mietek is the real siren here. Through his (in)actions he destroys Silver, Golden (through losing her sister), the band & their relationship to each other and his new marriage.

That makes sense. Kinga was wearing some sort of netting. Although that netting looked familiar...

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

I just thought of another WTF? inserted scene. The dream scene where the girls are each sucking on a breast of the older lady. I thought it was a vampire thing where she was letting them eat her so she could escape her life but then she was in the next scene as if nothing happened.

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

I read somewhere that the mermaids were supposed to stand in for immigrants or "outsiders" so maybe the policewoman was saying "Have sex with me or I'll turn you in"? There was a case in California where a prostitute accused an officer of doing that multiple times. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/california/articles/2017-05-19/judge-orders-oakland-officer-to-stand-trial-in-sex-scandal

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

The only scene I would say had to be inserted was the poison scene. I thought the sisters had killed them all or had Triton kill them. Then they seem to be responding before the blond lady activates the cure for each of them. My head spun the entire scene. As far as the mermaids I figured there had to have been others before Silver and Golden. How else would the one doctor know what to do to transplant the human lower half onto Silver's body and the tail onto the other girl? (Also how would the "father" know where to take Silver to have this done?) Yet everyone in the club went out of their minds when the girls jumped into the tank and revealed their tails.

I originally thought the club owner was the guy on the bank that they both ate parts of and that it was revenge for the assault. Nope, he shows up at the end and they're all a "happy" family.

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

I think the sisters should have left that club right after the casting couch. Yet they thought "Here are people who can be as horrific as we can, they'll understand us"?!?!?!? Was the end credit song sung by Silver? It sounded like her perspective on things "I'll be warmer in the depths than in your arms" and such. Yet the lyrics are contradicted by her final choice to hold him and turn to foam rather than tear his throat out. It was also strange she would choose one moment in Mietek's arms and leave her sister forever.
