Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera

As always my first impression is incomplete or inaccurate. I watched the Zydrate Anatomy featurette again last night and Terrance says that Amber is a wholesome campaigner for GeneCo-made Zydrate by day. To paraphrase: "Use Zydrate and you'll be OK! There are no side effects and it's not addictive!". At night she prowls the alleys looking to get her fix. She definitely still uses sex as payment because some of the shots in "Come Try My New Parts" are used in Zydrate Anatomy.

This is exactly it. I'm not sure that sex is her only payment for the Zydrate but it's a definite perk. It seems like she's trying to keep the full extent of her addiction secret from her father (and failing miserably) so she laments needing the Graverobber to keep her supplied with off-brand stuff. She knows how much better the real McCoy (callback to Streets of Fire?) is but can't ask her father for it. The "Come Try My New Parts" song makes that relationship explicit. Thanks for posting that kateacola.

I figured out who "they" are. They are his customers, the zydrate addicts he keeps grave robbing to keep supplied. It finally clicked when the vial came out and all the addicts flocked around him. He's lamenting becoming a dealer because the people only love him as long as he feeds their addictions. When he's done he's back to riding in the trash truck, harvesting off-brand Zydrate from the corpses.

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera

Sorry, last post. 1) Why are some people normal skin tones and some white? The white doesn't seem like they're just pale but like the skin has been bleached. I initially thought maybe the world was dark/in night/scorched sky for most of the time but the effect is very scattershot in the Zydrate Anatomy clip. 2) Is Amber having eye work done as well? At one point shortly after she says "Who did that?" She's looking around but her eyes are closed and there are marks around her eyes like she's recently had surgery. 3) Given the description on how to use "the little glass vial" is shooting someone with a Zydrate gun committing assault with a battery? (OK, I'll show myself out.)

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera

I'm glad to hear that Zydrate Anatomy was a movie add-on. That explains why a lot of the song either doesn't fit the rest of the movie or seemingly contradicts it. - The streetwalker Shilo meets says she has been turning tricks since she's 13. Maybe it's my age but she doesn't look all that bad for being out on the streets for years. (I guess GeneCo's transplants really work. She could make more money doing commercials for them than turning tricks.) Compare that to how quickly Fantine goes downhill in Les Miserables. - I still marvel at the idea the lady was turning tricks within a month of her first Zydrate dose/surgery combo. Is she that addicted to surgery? Is she related to Amber Sweet? - What happens when the initial dose of Zydrate wears off? Or is the surgery self-healing like the machines in Logan's Run? - Maximiliano commented on Paris getting the shot in her upper thigh. I was also surprised at this but mainly that her bodyguards allowed the Graverobber to get that close to her. They were pushing him off her when he had her against the wall. - The Graverobber laments getting into the business and says he wonders why "they" need him at all. Who's "they"? It can't be GeneCo because the making-of featurette has Terrance sitting in front of a poster reading "Graverobbers will be executed on sight." Maybe GeneCo was saying one thing publicly and employing graverobbers privately? - Why does Amber hate Blind Mag so much? As soon as Shilo says the name Amber is angry and looking for the offender. Amber then says something to the effect of "If Blind Mag wasn't in the way I could be that star!" Is that why they go after Blind Mag so much and eventually kill her? When I saw Repo! a couple years ago I don't remember Amber ever expressing an ambition to be a singing star.

I think you found it! Most of them are used to singing in the background and here they're expected to be front and center. OK, that's bad.

It didn't allow me until I was well over 100 posts (150 I think).

I mean before Paris/Amber shows up I got that was Alexa/Shilo singing. Once Paris arrived Alexa faded.

Zydrate Anatomy questions: 1) Video: Is the Cyrillic writing on the addiction group meeting poster just an "appropriation" a la A Clockwork Orange or did it mean something else? (In A Clockwork Orange a lot of Alex's words are Russian or "Russian-ish" like "droogs".) 2) Song: I still don't understand the purpose of Zydrate. Is it a general-purpose anesthetic to make surgeries cheaper (and make back-alley surgeries possible)? When I had a colonoscopy I was knocked out but I wasn't turning tricks a month later. (It was two months later.) 3) Song: Related to #2 - In proper surgeries the anesthesiologist has to do a bunch of calculations to make sure they use the right type and amount of anesthetic. I suppose Zydrate being a one-size-fits-all option just allows GeneCo to profit from the bodies created if the Zydrate winds up killing the patient? (To be continued)

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera

I bought Zydrate Anatomy on iTunes this morning for a lot of the same reasons. I also have to thank whoever posted the YouTube clip earlier. I've been watching that a bunch and will have some questions soon. Until I saw the clip I didn't realize it was two different women singing. For most of it I thought Paris was singing both parts (meaning I thought the lines were for the one character). Just shows what kind of ear I have. There wasn't enough distinction between the two voices (and the notes seemed to be in the same area) to instantly realize the interplay.

When the Wikipedia cast list of Alleluia was posted I was going to make fun of the name Jimmy Urine. (How could any parents name their kid Jimmy?!? The cruelty!) I guess Jimmy Urine is a serious songster, both from his Wikipedia bio and a song of his was in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that I saw tonight. Impressive!

ETA: I mean in the names. I hear Anthony Head and think of Anthony Heald and vice versa. That's what I get for not watching Buffy (Heresy, I know).

OK, new movie idea: HSM/Repo! mashup with Sharpay as the "heroine" instead of Shilo.

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera

I don't have a lot of comments right now. Hoping to watch this tomorrow night. In the meantime.. 1) Apropos of nothing, I keep getting Anthony Head and Anthony Heald confused. (Anthony Heald is the doctor that antagonizes Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs 2) Does anyone know why Anthony Stewart Head is credited as such? I'm always interested in the stories behind credited names. (For instance, Michael J. Fox had to come up with a middle initial because there was already a Michael Fox working.) In one thing I read it said Anthony Head mainly goes without the Stewart in British/U.K. productions.

And like High School Musical, there are 3 movies (at least planned - only 2 Devil's Carnivals have been made).

ETA: There's an easy explanation why you don't get it...
  19. Correction to #1. Kelsi is checking the watch to see what's taking Troy and Gabriella so long. It mutes her irritation but she outright is miffed in a close-up later. Just found this as a related video on YouTube. Guest-star: Sharpay (At least I assume it's Ashley Tisdale based on the video watermark). Spoiler alert: She winds up on the top of the ladder AGAIN! Musical Mondays Off-Week 10 (Ellenmc's Pick)

I watched Repo a couple years ago and I don't remember her at all. Guess I have something to look forward to!
  21. Also, congrats everyone and especially kateacola! Nice to have the record set by a positive thread, particularly when it's not related to a podcast episode.
  22. So...a few more things. Bop to the Top was an earworm over the weekend and I rewatched the scene on YouTube. 1) Kelsi seems bored and annoyed, checking a watch and shaking her head. Why? It's her song! Did she not write a Latin song and Sharpay & Ryan gave it a Latin arrangement? 2) Related to that, did their parents pay for a professional backing track? If the song is exactly as Kelsi wrote it then it seems unlikely Ms. Darbus would have cared enough to have a backing track made for auditions. 3) The song at the end says "'Til we reach the top" but only Sharpay is at the top of the ladder. Ryan doesn't climb until after she starts even though he was at the ladder first. Sharpay even literally "bops" him on the head and he drops a rung or two. Is that just Sharpay being "I'm the star" or is that part of the closeting of Ryan? He can't be the star until he comes to grips with who he is?
  23. ETA: The same theater did HSM last September. Coincidence? I think NOT!
