  1. So I just wanted to give a shout out to the costume designer for this. Especially for the red dress for the pub crawl/ powder room trips. His name is Charles LeMaire and he was influential in getting the Academy to have a costume design award. He worked on Broadway for Ziegfeld Follies and did a bunch of movies one of my favorite being his work with Edith Head on All About Eve (he did Marilyn Monroe's dress) .

This definitely is a feminist idea given how she framed it. I want to do this with my life and men don't see me that way. I would never belittle a woman who actively chooses to be a homemaker.

But part of me also recognizes, this is a movie written, directed by men and very clearly the male gaze. So, this scene comes across to me as, at best, accidentally feminist. It feels like Donna Reed wanted to be a homemaker on the show but it's also something that was used to hold down women. If women were moved by Jayne Mansfield and admired that scene, that's awesome. Maybe this was a more radical idea to have Jayne Mansfield say this in 1956 than i'm giving it credit for though.

Oh totally! It's very much an accident . When the scene first started I was honestly, very annoyed. Like oh of COURSE she loves this stuff because she's the perfect 50's woman! But just the throwaway line of "I'm more than just sexiness" felt to me like that was probably something Jayne had to deal with in real life? I don't know I'm probably reading into it. I just found it very poignant coming from someone who was pretty much sold to the public based on her sexiness.

I think that is a good question, especially because part of the reason conservative Americans were so against rock n' roll in the 1950s and 1960s was that black and white kids where, HORROR OF HORRORS, dancing together! At the same show! Maybe even touching! So if part of the reason for rock n roll's popularity, and the vitriol against it, was the natural integration of its audience, maybe that was the same with the performers as well? I know Elvis gets a lot of (deserved) flack for stealing from black artists, but that was also because he legitimately loved black music and loved singing with those artists.

I actually started looking up stuff and I just finished this really interesting article in Rolling Stone and they talk about segregated concerts and how rock and roll really did start to challenge Jim Crow laws.

    I

Query - is there something to be said about the protagonists all being white, and critiquing/appropriating a burgeoning Black style of music? Or am I looking too much into 50's fluff?

I was thinking about something along similar lines: How do you think the non white cast of performers were treated? This movie was made during Segregation. I'm sure they were paid less than the white singers because black performers routinely were. Doubly so for black female performers.

Do you think because it's a film set people were (there is no nice way to put this) less racist assholes? Because they were more used to dealing with different people and were tolerant/ not racist douchebags?  Or did the black performers just stuck together and didn't interact with anyone?  Was the set segregated and if so how much?

  5. Ok so I genuinely enjoyed this movie. I mentioned it in a comment in the preview section but the line Jayne has about wanting to be a mom but people only seeing her as a sexpot, is in my opinion, a really feminist statement. I know that sounds insane because it's such a 50's idea of the perfect woman who just wants to stay home and have babies but Janye sells it. She sells that she is a genuinely maternal person who loves being domestic and people keep sexulizing her and putting their fantasies onto her and forcing her to be this person.

Which we see literally happen with Fats who won't even let her clean her own house or cook for herself. Girlfriend can't even wear one of her cute (and totally useless) frilly aprons! He just takes all agency away from her. She's like his doll through most of the movie (so I was LIVING or the bouillon scene)  I think it's highlighted best when she's being fitted for her wedding dress. She looks like a literal doll  with no life in her.

  6. So I'm only 26 minutes into the movie and I LOVE Jayne Mansfield SO MUCH.  She's just a delight! I love all the music so far and I'm dying to know what movie the song about Sister Kate is from. I could honestly care less about the men. I just want to see Jayne go around and be fantastic and fun.

I'm sure we'll talk about it more but I really love this line she has when she's making him breakfast about how she wants to be a mother and housewife but all everyone sees her as is a sexpot and so they think she can't do it. Which honestly is such a feminist statement ( in that feminism is about letting women choose to be what THEY want to be. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a housewife if that's what you want. It's a problem if that's what you think you have to be or that's all there is.)

I'm really into this movie ! Plus I forgot how much I love the song The Girl Can't Help It

  7. All I know is that I'm going to be spending the entirety of Action Jackson thinking about Arrested Development and the various things Carl needs to get a stew going.

Tom Ewell also starred with Marilyn Monroe in The Seven-Year Itch.

I've never actually seen The 7 Year Itch all the way through. I've somehow only managed to see the first half and snippets here and there. Besides the iconic dress scene I wasn't too impressed with what I saw (though I was slightly vindicated that Monroe's character also keeps clothes in the freezer during heat waves. ).  Is it worth sitting down and seeing all the way through?

This entire conversation was really disconcerting!  Patsy's going on and on about how her husband controls her and, if she speaks up, he'll get angry, and LAW is just all, have you worn that dress? wear this perfume? Why would he be upset if you tell him you love him? Such bad advice! Besides, LAW hardly has any moral authority to tell her sister how to communicate with her (clearly) abusive husband. Ugh!

I want to see HER movie about a meek abused housewife who spends a weekend in Florida visiting her sister, going to male strip clubs, banging (presumably) a stripper/ random she meets from said club and finding herself so she can go home and leave her worthless piece of shit husband and have a successful life. Also maybe trying to sleep with her brother in law? They were wayyyy to close at that art gallery. She can wear the perfume and dress he likes while serving him divorce papers!

On the subject of creepy controlling husband's when they first go to Heaven doesn't LAW say her husband doesn't know she drinks / approves?

    Wait, you're right!!

Clearly, what happens is the teen witch from Beastly shows up, cursing him into a frog. Of course, he can't stop dancing, even though he's searching for true love's kiss. It's titled... The Princess and Michigan J. Frog

And then Madame Serena from Teen Witch finds him and turns him  human once again but he's now forced into being  her boy toy

Well of course he wants dongs to be shown more on screen, I mean have you seen that dude's hog? In other dong related news, did you guys hear that people online freaked out about a new issue of Batman where you could see the shadowed outline of his nude dong tip? It wasn't even really a closeup and it was in a shadow, but for some reason people were unprepared for Batdong.

Yes! I think  I read had to go back and edit it out of newer editions so now the first run or however comic printing works will one day be worth something because it's got Batdick in it

I can't forget where my obsessions with British baking, linguistics, and High Fantasy truly merge: LORD OF THE RINGS!

    giphy.gif?cid=3640f6095bc53b2c374b514a45

You know who also does high fantasy , mystery,  comedy, and and baking? Terry Pratchett's Discworld! Particularly the famed (and deadly) Dwarf Bread . It's even got it's own museum which I think is part of The Fifth Elephant book when the replica of the Scone of Stone is stolen.

My name is Gigitastic and I love Discworld,  cats,  Harry Potter , cheesy 90s tv shows with bad ass women,The Great British Baking Show, and drag queens(particularly when they play Dungeons and Dragons).I really don't want to fight because I am a delicate flower and my body is already a broken mess as is.

In all seriousness, he's dead right about the 50 Shades movies ... the shadows covering him up look spray painted on. Meanwhile, no one could possibly look less interested in being naked for 600 minutes of that franchise than Dakota Johnson, and she's a trooper about it the whole way through. Kevin Bacon as Christian Grey would've been 1000% more watchable.

So ... I live in an big condo complex. Does it count as "the home" when I go to the community recycling bins or run out to grab something out of the car? Do I have to wear shoes to go to community pool?

    I await your ruling.

It's a short walk so yes. It's technically a part of your home environment, like if you had a driveway. I would judge you if you wore shoes in the pool, unless it was the kind with the painful rough "no slip" surface in which case pool shoes are fine.  Judgment is saved for those who don't wear shoes when on airplanes, or when out running errands etc. Places where other people have to be. Though I do confess feeling weirded out by people just being barefoot in their yard for long stretches of time. I don't get the appeal of sitting on the ground with or without a blanket either though so *shrugs*

And yeah 50 Shades would have been fantastic with Kevin Bacon in it.  For something that is supposed to be super sexy I've never felt so bored. Dakota tried but honestly she's just so bland. Both her and her character... there's not much to work with. I don't think even a great actress could have salvaged that trash fire.

In the home is TOTALLY different than outside the home. My mom would hate it if I would wait to take my shoes off until I got to my room because I would track shit on the carpet. Plus there's an amazing episode of Fresh Off The Boat where they judge white people for wearing shoes inside because of all the germs from outside that then get taken throughout the whole house. I think the thing about white people and no shoes is more for outside because I definitely knew some dudes in college that would walk all around campus without any shoes on and I wouldn't be surprised if they needed at least one tetanus shot during their time there.

Yeah I know a lot of Asian cultures are big on taking your shoes off before going inside as a sign of respect. I grew up with in a  pretty relaxed white household and we tended to do the same but we never like forced guests to take their shoes off. It just feels weird to have your shoes on inside especially when you have carpet. I don't trust people who go barefoot outside. That's how you get tetanus, hookworm and God knows what else. Of course half my family does it.  The only thing worse are those weird glove like barefoot "shoes"

    Ugh

100% and I will cherish Mary Berry for the rest of my life. I do love Paul on the show as well because he clearly loves baking, just the way he gets his hands into dough in Masterclass when demonstrating anything. It's just like seeing someone who's found what they were put on this Earth to do. He definitely has an inflated opinion of himself, but he's also never cruel or vindictive to the contestants. He just says, "this is not good, you could have done better," "this is good,""this is a disaster," or "I would serve this at my restaurant." He's an honest authority... on a fucking reality show.

My name is Quasar Sniffer and I will take ANY GOD DAMN OPPORTUNITY to talk about the Great British Baking Show. So my go-to topics are.... Batman, Star Wars, Star Trek, and bakewell tarts. Don't get me started!

I like him as a baker but I've heard stories that he's a bit full of himself which makes me sad. He's ok but nowhere near as wonderful as Mary. I'd literally watch paint dry if Mary talked about it.

Yes, you can see the nipple on Jayne's right breast (her right) starting to peek out.

Oh you're right! I always thought that was a shadow or something. Jane Mansfield was the starlet who owned the Pink Palace right? She had this entire house done in shades of pink. I think they tore it down in the early 2000's. I just remember seeing a photo of her pink carpeted bathroom. *shudders* Even the ceiling and walls were carpeted! She's  actually really interesting. Supposedly she was incredibly smart and worked very hard at the dumb blonde roll.  I know she was rumored to have had a bunch of men in her life including John F Kennedy and Robert Kennedy. I do know she's Mariska Hargitay's mom from her marriage to Mickey Hargitay.

Hopefully it's OK to post this.  I love Sophia Loren giving Jayne the side-eye.

    Here's Sophia's side of it.

Wasn't she supposedly side eying her because her boobs were about to fall out of her dress onto the table? I seem to recall Sophia saying something to that effect . Speaking of Sophia Loren a local apple orchard has a llama named after her and I love her.  I feed her apples every time I visit and tbh I half the reason I go there is because of the llamas.

While we're waiting on Triple Lindy, I'd like to remind everyone that the musical (so it's tangentially related) television series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend back.

I tried so hard to like CEG but I found the main character to be kind of awful in the first season and a half I watched . I just couldn't root for her. She's really manipulate it felt like and I just can't deal with second hand embarrassment.
