Musical Mondays Off-Week 7 (Cinco DeNio's Pick)
kateacola replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I've never seen, except I did start watching it last week (only saw like the first 10 minutes) and fell asleep. Was not sure how I felt, but now I have to try again!- 143 replies

Lol, was going to say... bringing up the licorice debate again-- are you trying to tear us all further apart?
-
^is that licorice?
-
That whole movie was....upsetting
-
After watching Tommy, I don't know if I can eat beans again...
-
Lol...It's fine--more delicious coconut cookies for me

-
But seriously... If someone were to offer me Thin Mints--of course I'd eat them. Or any other GS cookie..
-
To weigh in on Girl Scout debate.... My first choice would be Tagalongs (PB & chocolate FTW). Second choice is Samoas Thin Mints are good, but not my fav-- & I don't usually end up buying any Thin Mints if I end up caving to buy GS cookies since they get more and more expensive every couple years (with less and less cookies in each box)

I feel you.. I think I'm a little more excited for The Lake House and Chopping Mall eps than this one. Not only to hear what they say about it on the podcast but also what y'all have to say about them... Not to say that I won't 100% enjoy the podcast about this one (BP), because I always do.. even if I'm not so enthused about the movie they're covering. But-- I do find most of the time the movies I'm not as excited about are some of the best eps (like Airborne being most recent example, that was a rough watch for me but I loved the podcast ep). So who knows.. that could be the case for this too. PS-- I still think Body Parts is worth a watch though

I have so many questions about The Lake House. So I was kinda bummed they're still holding on to it and doing Body Parts this week instead.

Uggh, I'm sure he was... haha It'd be tough for anyone to compare to Mitchell as Hedwig, I'd assume... Purely from seeing the film version.

If the stage version has more MC, I'm in. Especially with Alan Cumming as MC !

Well put! I did not bring up the trans "jokes" to be the PC police or anything..or trying to use that to discredit what topics they were being progressive with (at the time & even now). Again, I did like the movie and a little more-so after a 2nd viewing. I think it could grow on me a little more with another viewing (but probably not going to anytime soon). I just didn't love it, like I thought I would.

I am pretty sure that's what they were implying with the joke and character. I could be wrong, that's just what I took from it. But I have seen some critics reviews mention that as a criticism specifically. And I agree it was very progressive for it's time and it wasn't those jokes that turned me off to the movie or anything. It was just something that I wanted to mention. I had more of a "beef" with the relationships in that I guess I didn't totally buy that Sally and Brian loved each other. I could tell they cared for each other but I didn't get their romantic relationship in general. I just didn't get why they got out of the friend zone? When it seemed (intially) he was pretty adamant in not wanting to sleep with her.

I think it was the trans character "Elke" that walked into the mens room and was also the butt of a joke when Sally told Brian she was able to get away from the unwanted suitor because she told him 'she had the tiniest touch of syphilis" and then said "but wait until he gets a load of what ol' Elky's got" I found both of those jokes were kind of problematic.. I get that at the time that may have been a "go-to" joke, but I guess was a little disappointed since, like others have said, they were tackling a lot of subject matter that wasn't being showcased at the time.

So I had watched this twice in total ( first time I started it and watched about half, then finished the next night). It grew on me a little more on my second viewing but I too was a little disappointed. I think my expectations were maybe too high. I enjoyed most of the music numbers / any scenes in the Kit Kat Club because I really liked MC. And I really liked Liza's performing and signing "Mein Herr" and "Maybe this Time" especially... So I liked it, but I didn't love it like I thought I would (or like some of you may have). I'm still trying to pin-point the issues I had with it but think most of it has to do with the Brian-Sally relationship and the Love Triangle in general. I don't fully get why Brian and Sally ended up crossing their friend line or what her motivation with Brian was? I get her main motivation with Max was money but Brian...I'm not sure because it did not seem like it was love or... I don't know what it was really since I did not feel that much chemistry with them. I think if I understood the relationships more + more scenes at the Kit Kat Club, I'd have enjoyed it more. I'm curious as to what the differences are between the film and stage version are though.

Lol..But I agree with your points (and others who made similar points) that I am not sure that it has the "bad" movie qualities that are showcased on the podcast. And this is being said by someone who didn't love this movie either. The main character kind of killed the movie for me too, but otherwise nothing too "bad" or any crazy/strange plot points to make it HDTGM-worthy

When Brian and Sally first meet when he gets to the boarding house he says "You're American" and she goes "How depressing! You're meant to think I'm an international woman of mystery.." I thought, well.. he does know a thing or two about International Men of Mystery...

I didnt love this movie..but I definitely don't think it's bad or even close to being "bad" enough to be on the podcast.

it was my dumb thing about the batteries..lol When he called you out, he said they were screengrabs from Body Parts... but weren't they both from Chopping Mall?
