Musical Mondays-Week 6-Jesus Christ Superstar
kateacola replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Thanks for this explanation... Im not really religious, but in a similar boat as a couple others have mentioned. With being dragged to church when I was younger. My mom was religious but my Dad wasn't (still isnt). So we'd go through spurts of going every Sunday to church β¦to not going for awhile. And after my mom passed away (when I was in high school) I stopped going all together... Since I never really bought into it, even when I was a kid. And was baptised (late) and went to church mainly for her sake. But anyway.. I am familiar with the story but the Romans/Jews part in it was hazy and I dont think I ever fully understood their parts in it. Makes more sense now- 205 replies

And again, I really enjoyed Carl Anderson/Judas. I really liked his voice and what he brought to his songs, so I did like all songs he's in. Did also think Mary had a good voice. And liked the super low tone/ sometimes high pitched talk-signing from the Pharisees & priests.- 205 replies

Musical Mondays-Week 6-Jesus Christ Superstar

Yeah-- if I don't like a majority of the songs I can't get into it either. The more I listen to the soundtrack / rewatch clips of the movie, the funnier I find the Jeepers Creepers sketch.. since it's pretty spot on with the parodying the shots/visuals, music & crazy dancing. But even though there was some weird musical choices..I dunno a lot of the songs still worked for me. I did like the weird choices-- the non-typical time signatures in the songs and/ or multiple time signature changes.- 205 replies

Hahaha love it. But maybe he cant maintain his pretty Jennifer Aniston hair with generic ointment? But I agree, JC should be using generic and 300 pieces of silver is pretty steep in comparison to the 30 Judas was paid to betray Jesus.... That has to be some be some high end hair/foot ointment- 205 replies

I took it that way too.. Plus with them doing this play/musical in the middle of the desert for no audience also is a way of showing this... That people "now" did not witness Jesus / this story but it is still important & needs to be told?- 205 replies

Musical Mondays-Week 6-Jesus Christ Superstar

Same... I felt like Jesus was kind of whiny. And felt like I def wanted more Judas and less Jesus in this. But In the very beginning I intially wondered if it was problematic that they had Judas played by Carl Anderson-- a black guy. Since I was expecting it to be like the traditional story, I was thinking: "so the role of jesus is given to a guy that looks exactly like the "accepted" appearance of Jesus. White guy, long blonde hair.. But Judas the "villan" is black??".. So initially I kind of thought it was messed up. And I was afraid this was going to be another example of an older movie being blatantly racist. But as I watched more and saw that this Judas wasn't really the villan. I found him to be more sympathetic and understood why he was critical of Jesus.. Cause he was whiny and did come across like he was buying into his "superstar" status and did need to tone it down.. Plus I felt like no other actor/singer, regardless of race, would have nailed the Judas part like Anderson did. So ultimately I put my initial thought away--that it was maybe subtly (or overtly) racist.- 205 replies

I was expecting this to be more along the lines of the "traditional" story. But felt like this was told more through Judas' perspective. And that Judas wasn't exactly the villan/betrayer but more of the anti-hero..- 205 replies

Was the whole play/ musical they put on in the middle of the desert an elaborate plan to ditch the guy playing Jesus?- 205 replies

Musical Mondays-Week 6-Jesus Christ Superstar

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I had seen parts of it before--from my parents watching it anytime they came across it on tv. I remember my thoughts were usually "what is going on?" "what are they wearing?" "why are they watching this?"... And I would usually leave the room and go do something else. This was the first time I watched from start to finish, and I enjoyed it. I like a lot of the songs and have been listening to the soundtrack at work/ while driving. I did lose a little steam near the end of the movie though...but overall I enjoyed it a lot. I was a little surprised/impressed it was basically 100% singing and no spoken dialogue.. but then I am not sure if maybe that's why I lost steam near the end. I was trying to think if I had seen many other musicals that were all songs and no spoken dialogue.. I think Phantom of the Opera was the only one I have seen and thought was close, but has some minor lines here and there?? (It's been awhile since I've watched). But I remember losing some interest near the end of that one too.- 205 replies

I'm not sure if I have seen the movie in it's entirety. But I know I've seen parts/ chunks of it a couple times... since I remember when I was a kid / early teen my dad would put it on anytime he noticed a cable channel was playing it. Know I've seen a majority of it but idk if I've seen from start to finish. Excited to watch, and will be interesting to see how much of it I remember.- 126 replies

I think I saw this when it came out in theaters when I was 13... because I had a crush on Jesse Bradford after seeing Bring it On...haha I do not remember a whole lot, since I think I only saw it that once...but remember even then thinking a lot of the plot points were crazy/ not plausible. Think they should definitely cover this one on the podcast. I think I recently saw it listed streaming somewhere? hbo go/ netflix?? might try watching soon & see how bad it is

Episode 156 - xXx: Return of Xander Cage: LIVE!

I think you're right that the team/ character title cards were influenced by GI Joe. The director of xXx, was on to make GI Joe 3 but was delayed because he took on this movie. http://www.slashfilm...mers-crossover/ -

Adam and Jason weren't wrong in assuming Vin picked out the wardrobe in this movie... This article/ interview with one of the stunt doubles, Cody Townsend, said when asked about how many sleeveless tees Vin has on set: http://www.tetongrav...ls-stunt-double -
Yesss, agree its WAY better than 2005 version. And I think Ive seen all or almost all adaptations of P&P...but this is the best one for sure. For me, no one else can be Mr. Darcy but Colin Firth...

Don't know if this counts since it's a mini-series. But it's probably my favorite "romance" And it's usually really hard for me to pin down a favorite for anything, but I end up binge-ing it once a year at some point (last few years at least) since I love it so much And for songs that's hard but two of my current favs are: Ed Sheeran- Kiss me Musiq Soulchild- Love

Musical Mondays-Week 5-Across the Universe

Agreed, it did feel like he was trying to bring different to the table. But I tend to like when Izzard shows up in movies... Like I think Mystery Men is a great movie, but even more awesome with him in it. He (like Jason) also does a voice of a villian in the Lego Batman which was awesome.. -

Eddie Izzard's "being for the benefit of Mr. Kite" reminded me a lot of Rex Harrison's talk-singing in My Fair Lady. -

I remember liking this movie the first time I saw it a long time ago (like Cakebug). I think my enjoyment had more to do with it re-introducing me to the Beatles, as I listened to them a lot when I was younger. And I liked (and still do) the visuals/ cinematography and a good amount of their "covers" in this movie. But re-watching recently I didn't enjoy as quite as much. I did not totally hate it and I am still ok with forgiving some of the issues... but I lost a lot of steam around the time Bono showed up (which I totally forgot him & Izzard make appearances in this). And I never totally got back on board. Like most of you have said, a lot of things felt SUPER forced just so they could be like: "hey look we did this song too". If some side characters were less involved (or cut out completely) it probably could have worked better. That would have cut down on runtime (felt a little too long) and also help focus on the Jude/Lucy storyline. **btw I'm a longtime lurker of the boards, and also a big fan of musicals
