  1. I always thought there was a hint of jealousy with Caroline being so nasty towards Elizabeth and her sister/family. Did she kind of want to get with Darcy herself? I always got that vibe but wasn't sure and can't remember if it was more explicit in the book. But the P&P miniseries I felt like Caroline was kind of into Darcy herself. (In the miniseries at least) it felt like she probably knew Darcy did not want to marry Lady Catherine's daughter, so she assumed she had a chance since she was his "equal". But then Elizabeth steps in the picture and she sees her chance slipping away. So she talks as much shit as she can about Elizabeth and her family to Darcy / Bingley to remind them that Jane and Elizabeth (& rest of Bennets) are not their equals (in society, wealth, etc) and it would be somewhat scandalous if Bingley or Darcy married one of them. EDIT: I also agree that Indira's Caroline character was not utilized properly
  2. Interesting! I was wondering if it was a Bollywood thing or actors choice. Maybe both in this case. Same though. Darcy is soooo important and it has to be done right, so I really don't understand how he got cast in the first place. Feel like maybe they should've switched the actor playing Wickham with the dude playing Darcy. Not that I think the actor playing Wickham could totally pull it off, but think he could've been less bland. But on IMDB's B&P page it says: I am not sure if I would've liked that either. I don't think Depp could do Darcy justice, Joaquin maybe I guess could've pulled off some Darcy brooding. But still don't know if I'd be fully on board. I'm too picky though when it comes to Darcy, lol.
  3. They never show him and Lalita kissing either. There was that moment where it shows their silhouettes on the beach and it looks like they're going to kiss. But they continue hugging.
  4. I agree. I know I mentioned earlier that I also was digging the first half quite a bit (minus bland Darcy). And the beginning was when it was more "Bollywood". The song/dance numbers in the beginning I liked a lot (especially the ones with Naveen dancing, lol). It wasn't even that the dancing was that great or complicated. But what I liked about the more "Bollywood" song/dance numbers was that they all looked like they were having fun, which made it fun to watch. When they moved away from those it became less fun to watch because it caused me to pay more attention to how lame this Darcy is.
  5. Yeah I don't think I liked that Lady Catherine's character was morphed into being Darcy's mom in this.. I mean, I get why they did that instead.. but yeah there wasn't that satisfying moment of going off on her.
  6. I enjoyed the first half of the movie, but then the 2nd half was losing me more and more (but Darcy was not great from the start). But yeah, it started to feel rushed at the end and they were cramming a bunch in all at once. The more it got away from the original story the less and less I was feeling it. Plus the stronger musical numbers were in the beginning as well, so that also didn't help. While the Darcy was super miscast and killed some of my enjoyment. I felt like almost everyone else was doing a good job with their P&P characters. I thought Aishwarya did a good job as Lalita (Elizabeth). And I thought the Mr. Collins equivalent (Mr. Knoli) was pretty funny and a good/ more modern take on the character. And I totally forgot Alexis Bledel was in this. It surprised me for a second time when I was rewatching for this week, lol.
  7. I haven't watched either of those. But curious to check out now. I did watch Lost in Austen during my Austen adaptation watching spree (Taylor recommended to me on Letterboxd). I liked it a lot and binged it in one day because I have no self-control, lol. But that one is a mini-series too and is a P&P adaptation but with a twist. Like Cameron said, it's not too complicated of a story. Bride & Prejudice may not be the best adaptation of P&P, but if you generally like the story then I'd say definitely check out some others. I'm the opposite, lol. Movies and shows in that time period are my jam.
  8. I've only read P&P and Emma. I'm not sure which I enjoy more novel-wise. It's been awhile since I've read either. Northanger Abbey I've never read but recently watched the movie adaptation (with Felicity Jones) and I really liked it. I was trying to watch all Jane Austen movie / series adaptations that I've never seen a few months ago. I watched quite a few adaptations I've never seen before, and out of that run Northanger Abbey was my favorite. Yea I tried watching P&P & Zombies twice and could never get past the first 15 mins.
  9. For real, he could've used her smoulder or from Daniel Gillies (Elijah from Vampire Diaries / The Originals) he is also a familiar face in B&P that I was not expecting to see. He smolders too, lol.
  10. Yeah, he didn't quite do it for me. No smolder, not enough longing stares or brooding, lol. No not yet, I always see N&S being recommended to me on Amazon Prime. Do I need to watch it?
  11. This is the only Bollywood(ish) movie I've watched. I've seen clips of others and have been interested in watching Bollywood films, but I had no idea where to start. I watched this one earlier this year cause I thought it could be a baby-step into the genre, since it's a story I already know and love. I remember it was a fun watch and it did make me excited to check out more, but I'm still not sure what to check out next, lol. Definitely have to watch the Colin Firth version! It is my favorite and I probably watch it once a year (all 5-6 hours of it). I think the mini-series does P&P better justice. Firth and Ehle are my favorite Darcy and Elizabeth. Not to get too into it before we discuss, but I will say the Darcy in Bride & Prejudice I was a little disappointed in. I know I would have liked it much more with a better Darcy..but I know my Darcy expectations are too high, lol. I still thought it would be a fun pick and glad everyone seems down!
  12. We already know who wins the Darcy off
  13. Ahh. I'm here! I've had a list of picks I was considering and I got it down to 2 very different musicals. This was kind of a panic pick, lol. I decided to go with the one that is more different than the other movie musicals we've covered so far. So..here we go:

Musical Mondays Week 23 Top Hat

Exactly why I think Kelly is a bit more charming. Overall I find him more fun to watch and comes off slightly more likeable. There is an Astaire scene that's pretty fun in Easter Parade, but I don't want to keep showing clips from that one (in case I do for my next pick) Watching Easter Parade, Fred was charming in it and there were some really great dancing scenes from him---but I felt like Judy Garland stole the show and I was more charmed by her than him. She stood out a lot more to me. While I've watched the 3 movies with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland paired up (For Me and My Gal, The Pirate, and Summer Stock) and I was equally charmed and mesmerized by GK and JG in all 3.

Musical Mondays Week 23 Top Hat

I thought it was funny when Astaire's character is getting carried away with tap dancing and wakes up Dale (Ginger) that she's already done up with perfect hair and makeup. Who goes to sleep like that? And while I enjoyed his dancing, it is pretty rude for him to be full out tap dancing at night in a hotel room when you're not on the first floor.

Musical Mondays Week 23 Top Hat

I confess this could be part of the reason why he seems more charming..lol I haven't watched a ton of Astaire movies but I can see what you guys are saying that Kelly can sometimes look like he's working hard while Astaire seems to be more effortless in his dancing. But I think Astaire making it look so easy is what makes him not quite as charming to me.

Musical Mondays Week 23 Top Hat

And guess I'm in the minority here, but I find Gene Kelly a bit more charming than Astaire. I really enjoy watching them both and they are fantastic dancers but IDK I think GK has a slight charm edge over Astaire. COME AT ME BROS!

Musical Mondays Week 23 Top Hat

Also found a couple stories about the "Cheek to Cheek" scene in Top Hat but on IMDb it says: I watched Easter Parade and did not realize it was parodying that scene. But it is pretty entertaining, and I really loved Judy Garland in that one (and it was on my shortlist for my next pick, but I'm still deciding) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uevi7AsLFeY From the stories/articles I've read-- it seems like Fred and Ginger only worked together and weren't that friendly off screen. Which is bizarre to me, I would have never guessed that.

Musical Mondays Week 23 Top Hat

This was the first Rogers-Astaire movie I watched. And like Cameron I looked up what their real-life relationship was. I don't know that I expected them to be in a romantic relationship in real life, but expected they were atleast good friends and enjoyed working together/ liked being dance partners. But doesn't seem that way :
  22. Ooh nice pick! I just recently watched this one. But it was the first Fred Astaire I've seen..(if not counting Santa Claus is Coming to Town). I've watched a couple more of his movies afterwards during my classic movie musical kick, but this is still the only Fred & Ginger movie I've seen (the other 2 Astaire movies I watched were Royal Wedding and Easter Parade) but I plan to watch more. Looking forward to discussing this one with everyone

Some tidbits from imdb I thought were interesting about the movie production and dealing with the child actors/child labor laws:
