Yeah. I don't have anyone I was pushing for that year. I was probably rooting for Javier Bardem just to be a contrarian. But I'm honestly good with anyone that got nominated winning.
-
I'm too lazy to look up what else came out in 2010, but looks like that was another year without a standout lead actor (in my opinion). But the Academy also thought King's Speech was the best picture. So, maybe they just went crazy that year? I agree that it's definitely not what I'd say is Firth's most award deserving performance. Retroactively, I'd give it to Jesse Eisenberg probably but I don't think I would have done it in 2010.

Leo gets dirty and ate meat despite being a vegetarian is about as ugly as I expect he's willing to let himself get. I think he got the Oscar because it was a kind of weak year for lead actors and the whole "can u believe leo never won an oscar!?!?!?!?!?!?!"
-
Definitely. Actors are getting nominated for the work of costumers and makeup artists (see also: Vice). I probably wouldn't balk is Bohemian Rhapsody got an Oscar nomination for that because, in parts, that the costuming and makeup was good. But that was mostly just Freddie Mercury in parts and the Brian May wig. For the rest, even the makeup and costumes looked kind of crappy.

Musical Mondays Week 84 Preview (JammerLea’s Pick)
grudlian. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Yes. A Beatles movie was on my shortlist for my next turn but I hadn't thought of this one. Good pick. -
All of this. Green Book was at least well acted enough to kind of offset its mediocrity. So, I didn't like it but I didn't hate it. Bohemian Rhapsody was straight trash. I especially can't believe it won an Oscar for editing and Rami Malek's performance. Both were truly awful. If that movie didn't have the Live Aid section, it would have been one of the worst movies of the year.

Paterson is so good. I really loved it and I'm pretty mixed to negative on Jarmusch overall. I can't believe I forgot Columbus in all these lists. I blame Letterboxd for how it sorted my movies (it looks like it put it last on my ratings of 4 star movies for the decade). It's such a great movie that really moved me. I can't tell how much of that is because the movie is good or how much is living near-ish Columbus and working there briefly. I think it (maybe unintentionally) tells the story of a lot of people from Columbus that could be bigger but are stuck in this medium sized city with no opportunity to go anywhere or have connections. So, they just kind of stay big fish small pond except this pond doesn't particularly appreciate big fish.

Episode 230 — Fateful Findings: LIVE! (w/ Rob Huebel)

Can I also get in on this message? I came to ask where to watch this because all I found was possibly on vudu. -
Musical Mondays Week 83 The Commitments (w/ Once)
grudlian. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Whew. I thought I was the only one expecting a minisode when I opened stitcher this morning. -
Yeah, if I were in charge of nominating, I'd certainly have put Gerwig on my list and potentially Marielle Heller. Scorsese probably wouldn't make my top 5 (but maybe). Tarantino wouldn't have gotten close. I also think the problem is, as Graham says, it's still men in the academy. The by product of that is they simply aren't seeing or appreciating the movies on the same level. I think they aren't seeing Little Women as the same caliber movie as Joker (or whatever) and it's not part of the conversation on any level for them (Not that movies directed by women are inherently for women and not men. Or movies from men are inherently for men, not women. That's obviously dumb).

It's kind of hard to argue with who the Golden Globes nominated this year (I haven't seen 1917 so I'm just assuming) but I'd certainly be fine getting Tarantino off the list for Greta Gerwig no question.

If High Life is the Robert Pattinson movie, I'd put that in my hated section. But to each their own.

Musical Mondays Week 83 The Commitments (w/ Once)

By the way, even though I keep kind of ripping on this movie, I did like it. I think the actors were mostly pretty good. The energy of the film is pretty good and I'm really glad they didn't try that dumb ending like, "They went on the be the biggest band in the world" or some such nonsense. They ended like the vast majority of bands: a few gigs then never, ever being remotely popular. -
I liked Us but felt the main story is a bit muddled. Shaft is especially terrible. I didn't expect much but it was really homophobic, racist, and misogynist. It also had a lot of "lol millennials and boomers/gen x sure are different!" kind of lazy jokes that almost always sided against young people. I also really hated Aladdin but I was never a huge fan of that to begin with. So, a weaker version in every aspect wasn't going to win me over. I didn't hate Brightburn or The Dead Don't Die but I definitely wouldn't recommend them. Maybe if they were both 45 minutes long so they didn't just drag on forever. I like most of the movies you picked. I agree there were a ton of great movies directed by women this year. I think Greta Gerwig has a chance to be nominated but I don't really follow that kind of buzz. So, maybe I'm just being hopeful. If you want some more female directed films this year, I recommend A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, The Souvenir, Atlantics, Little Woods, Honey Boy, Blinded By The Light and Queen & Slim are all worth anyone's time.

Musical Mondays Week 83 The Commitments (w/ Once)
grudlian. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Absolutely. Guitar, bass, drums, sax, trumpet, lead and two back-up singers. That's still eight people even without the manager. That's enough for a two hour movie. -

I thought it sounded pretty good for an early 90s Irish movie band if it was live but I also thought the lip synching was too good to be pre-recorded. I just saw this is based on a novel. So, I assume the book gives a lot of the characters not getting enough time. It's probably just as adaptation issue of compressing everything to a movie length. -

Did the whole band play their instruments? It definitely looks like some of the music was recorded live. The lead singer didn't look like he was lip synching. I figured a lot of the rest was just miming it. I was too lazy to look it up but did the lead singer ever go on to be a singer? He's got a great voice. -
Musical Mondays Week 83 The Commitments (w/ Once)
grudlian. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Yeah. I felt the same about the just being too many characters to the detriment of character development. I liked the developed characters but the are several band members who don't really get anything to do. If this had six band members, I think it's just a stronger film for the characters. This scene with long brown hair woman confessing her love was jarring. I had no idea she liked him or that maybe he liked her. I think it would have worked better if it Bernie and Imelda as the only two back-up singers. Bernie could have been the one in line with Rabbit. It makes Bernie's anger at Rabbit asking to get Imelda in the band more justifiable (though it was justifiable but is stronger). It's a bit stereotypical that the aloof guy isn't picking this up but oh well. -

Especially when it seems that very few of the people in the band listened to or had any interest in soul music. This is a cover band. Maybe they would have started writing their own songs but a cover band of a style instead of a particular band probably isn't going anywhere big. And it appears that the artists they were covering seemed to be active and occasionally playing in Dublin. -
These aren't in any particular order. I want to note that I haven't seen 1917 or Portrait Of A Lady On Fire which I both suspect will make my top 10-20. Marriage Story Uncut Gems Homecoming Parasite The Farewell Little Women Booksmart Waves A Hidden Life Honey Boy Ad Astra Avengers: Endgame Brittany Runs A Marathon Knives Out Toy Story 4

Episode 229 — The Spirit Of Christmas (w/ Jessica St. Clair)

I thought maybe there was a dry county in Massachusetts but a quick Google search doesn't pull up anything. So, if he wasn't bootlegging, what was he doing? Was he lying to his girlfriend in the 1920s about why he was gone for weeks at a time? Is he lying to us now about what he was doing? What was so bad that he's willing to cover it up with breaking federal law? -
I didn't add American movies directed by women or people of color. I put up a few already but, again, I want to recognize some that aren't in my favorites. A lot of these are maybe not great or top 10 of the year but I think they are all worth your time. 2016 Tallulah Edge of Seventeen Jackie Queen Of Katwe Sleight American Honey Fences Swiss Army Man 13th 2017 Detroit The Rider Mudbound Thor Ragnarok Kingdom Of Us Shape Of Water Beach Rats Columbus 2018 The Kindergarten Teacher Skate Kitchen Private Life Leave No Trace The Long Dumb Road You Were Never Really Here Can You Ever Forgive Me? If we absolutely must include a superhero movie, I'd pick Superman: The Movie or Into The Spider-verse. I like Black Panther a lot and I'll say it's the best of the MCU, but I just can't get behind it as a top 100 movie of all time.

2016: Moonlight, Paterson, Certain Women My real favorite is the fall episode of Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life which I can technically count as a movie right? 2017: Get Out, Lady Bird, Good Time I have some similar reservations to Amy for Get Out. I'm not holding out for Jordan Peele to better it but I find it's a tad inconsistent. I feel like the humor takes away from the horror. I still respect it a lot of its strengths though. 2018: Sorry To Bother You, Eighth Grade I'm still waiting on seeing a few more movies before making a 2019 list. For a lot of these movies, I wouldn't put them on a list of the 100 greatest as they are just my favorites. I'd seriously consider Moonlight and Get Out and that's about it. Maybe it's recency bias against them but we're talking top 100 of all time not just movies I like a bunch.
