Best of the Decade Part 3 (2016-2019)

Then I'll leave it as it's not really my place to say but that is a sad realization. I do think a lot of straight people ignored it because the incident happened to a boy instead of a girl
  2. I wouldn't feel too weird about not knowing it. When I say we were super Methodist, my grandfather was a minister. My dad strongly considered seminary. I was the third generation to attend a (in name only but still technically) Methodist university. And I'm only aware epiphany exists. So, if Methodists do more for it than mention it the Sunday closest to January 6, i don't know what it is.
  3. I should say my parents are super Methodist though so maybe that makes a difference on epiphany awareness. I think my mom was fine taking down the decorations but my dad wanted them up. Now, no one in my family decorates.

Best of the Decade Part 3 (2016-2019)

I'll have more to say later about the rest of the decade but I am mildly busy at work right now. I liked Call Me By Your Name okay but no one ever talks about how it's a grown man grooming a 17 year old to sleep with him. The movie is very well acted and shot but it's still about statutory rape in a lot of the US.
  5. Also raised Methodist. I was aware of epiphany as a kid but we didn't do anything for it. We definitely kept our Christmas decorations up until epiphany every year.

    Star Wars

Amy & Paul make the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs to 1977's George Lucas space fantasy Star Wars! They learn why Carrie Fisher hated those buns, praise the visionary designs of Ralph McQuarrie, and ask if we can still appreciate it as a single film in a post Star Wars world. Plus: Paul Hirsch, the editor of Star Wars, talks about bringing Lucas' vision to the final cut.

    Star Wars

Probably the biggest is advancing special effects in film. Compared to what a lot of special effects heavy movies looked like pre Star Wars and after Star Wars, it's pretty obvious that it was revolutionizing the industry purely from a technical standpoint. With special effects, we can also see that special effects spectacle films increased dramatically even to today. Spectacle films didn't originate with Star Wars, but they stopped being relegated to B movies. I think the over reliance on using the Hero's Journey monomyth as a basic story structure is due to Star Wars. I don't think Star Wars originated anything but it popularized a lot of things in a way no other movie had before. I may not even like the influence it has had on movies, but it's there.
  8. The only reason I even suspected this might be the case is, when I bought my first house, I asked my realtor to specifically show me haunted houses in my price range. He told me that my state also requires you to disclose but only if asked. My realtor was once asked to do a quick estimate (not a full appraisal) on a house he later found out might have been haunted. Like the appraiser in the movie, he was in and out in minutes because he was legit too scared to do the job. So, I don't want to say The Spirit Of Christmas could happen, but maybe????
  9. I guess my next pick will have to be Fame.
  10. For sure this. Turn it into a haunted house tour in October and the 12 days leading to Christmas is obvious. You could probably pay for half the year in that month and a half. If you can't get the rest of the year paid for in an old timey, New England inn, what are you doing? I don't remember why the law firm needed the sale to happen by the end of the year. But the ghost only shows up for 12 days. Why didn't they schedule an appraisal anytime that isn't December 13-25? A sale this important and time sensitive seems like someone could have planned around that.
  11. If your property is haunted and located in Massachusetts, where Spirit Of Christmas is set, there are laws regulating if and when you must disclose this to the potential buyer. According to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 93, section 114 "...(c) that the real property has been the site of an alleged para psychological or supernatural phenomenon. No cause of action shall arise or be maintained against a seller or lessor of real property or a real estate broker or salesman, by statute or at common law, for failure to disclose to a buyer or tenant that the real property is or was psychologically impacted. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the provisions of this section shall not authorize a seller, lessor or real estate broker or salesman to make a misrepresentation of fact or false statement." The short version is, if I'm reading the law correctly, a homeowner does not have to voluntarily disclose their house being haunted. If the buyer asks, you can't lie about it supposing you believe the house is haunted.
  12. I don't know if they said when Daniel was murdered, but Prohibition ended in 1933. The undercut was definitely a popular hairstyle for men in the 1920s and 1930s. The version Daniel has is certainly more modern but it's not an outrageous hairstyle for a prohibition era man. I don't know if it's popularity died because of WWII, but I've always suspected that. Hitler and the Hitler youth had a similar haircut to the modern undercut. I remember when it first started coming back in style a few years ago, I remember reading fashion message boards talking about the "Hitler youth" haircut and how to ask for it without specifically asking for "Hitler youth" since that's an awkward conversation at the barber.

    Cats (2019)

The studio has announced they are updating the special effects for the movie a week into its theatrical run. That has to be the fastest update in movie history.

    Star Wars

By against it, I mean thinking it doesn't belong on the list. We've debated what the list should be before. Despite everyone's individual take on what that is, I think we've all had some movies that we voted on for "importance" more than we've enjoyed it. So, I'm not really asking if people like Star Wars but I think we can all agree from a stance of influence alone it's a no brainer. At the very least, I'd say someone is uneducated (or have a massive hole) on American cinema of the last 40 years if you haven't seen Star Wars. There is something to be said against Star Wars as just a kid's movie in the first era of home video. I don't think it would have been a flash in the pan we all forgot about had VCRs not existed though. It was still widely seen by people of all ages around the world and was a massive box office success. It had staying power without home media.

    Star Wars

It looks like I'm not able to add a poll for some reason. But I would assume this is a 100% yes vote. If someone is genuinely against this being in the top 100, I'd be very curious to hear their reasoning.

    Episode 228.5 — Minisode 228.5

12 Dates Of Christmas is definitely worthy. As someone who doesn't watch Christmas romance movies, how bad is The Spirit Of Christmas? It's a bad movie but how does it rank compared to other Hallmark Christmas movies? It doesn't seem that much worse from what I've seen.
  17. This is the exact same argument the High Strung judges had on if dance should evolve. A vote for the jug band is a vote stodgy old tradition. The vote was symbolic for change and embracing the uncertain future instead dying, clinging to the old ways that kept the citizens of Waterville poor. In this essay, I will explain why Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas is a prescient, scathing metaphor for our current political climate...
  18. Yeah. The Darlings are the Otters. Mayberry is Waterville. That episode where James Best is a rockabilly star is The Nightmare Band.
  19. Bret Mckenzie is working on a reboot. Pretty sure that's going to be a big miss for me. Don't think it can really live up to this. https://slate.com/culture/2019/10/bret-mckenzie-muppet-emmet-otter-jug-band-christmas-reboot.html

Best Of The Decade Pt. 2

Paul & Amy continue the Best Of The Decade miniseries, picking their favorite films from each year of the 2010s! This episode covers the years 2013-2015, and they'll discuss a visionary action film, a super-low-budget indie gem, and an inescapable musical among many others. Plus: a critical eye on this year's Golden Globe nominations.

Best Of The Decade Pt. 1

Amy & Paul kick off a new decade-spanning miniseries, where they'll pick their favorite films from each year of the 2010s! This episode covers the years 2010-2012, and they'll advocate for knotty films from cinema's modern masters, a balls-to-the-wall cult comedy, and a nearly-forgotten Best Picture winner among many others.
  22. It's been a few years since I last watched this and I'm going to get to it tonight. So, I don't have much to say now. But I think the River Bottom Nightmare Band put on a better performance.

    Booksmart (2019)

You're right. I liked Superbad just fine the first time. The second time, things like penis drawings just aren't as funny. I don't remember much of Booksmart relying on extreme humor so I expect it will hold up a lot better.

Best Of The Decade Pt. 2

I definitely agree that we are part of the problem. A lot of the recent years, especially the ones that are harder to narrow down to two favorites, I could have chosen something directed by a non-white man. I do like the idea of at least highlighting some movies directed by women and people of color even if they aren't my favorites. I'll at least limit myself to English language films of I don't do purely American films (since the AFI included clearly non-American movies) 2010: Submarine, The Arbor, Meek's Cutoff, Certified Copy 2011: Fast Five, Pariah, Higher Ground, Another Earth, Shame 2012: Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World, Ruby Sparks, Stories We Tell, Brave 2013: Gravity, Fruitvale Station, 12 Years A Slave, Enough Said, Short Term 12, Snowpiercer 2014: The Babadook, Selma, Beyond The Lights, Welcome To Me, 99 Homes 2015: Furious 7, Diary Of A Teenage Girl, Inside Out, Dope, Creed, Me Earl And The Dying Girl

    Episode 228.5 — Minisode 228.5

So, wait. Is this an app we get or do we just text the number? Of course, I probably will never actually use it because I'm not sure what I would text Paul Sheer about.
