I'm watching High Strung right now and there's an awful lot of ballet. I'm taking bets on whether or not Jason references Bunheads in the episode.

I definitely think Social Network is the film that best represents the decade from a societal standpoint. It's definitely a good movie. So, I wouldn't complain if someone called it movie of the decade even if it's not my favorite.

Anyone calling Booksmart a rip off of Superbad needs to realize that Superbad isn't the even close to the first "high schoolers try to get to a party movie." The are similarities between the two but the are similarities with Booksmart and Dazed And Confused and The Stoned Age and American Graffiti. I liked this a lot. The leads are all funny. The emotional moments really work well and are believable. It's just an all around great movie.

I would say 5 is probably a good minimum age. I think much younger than that and there's very little geared toward children younger than that. Disney is very expensive. While they are going to enjoy it at the time, I'd hate to spend that kind of money and they don't remember it in a few years which they probably won't younger than 5 years old.

I still have the DVDs of The Simpsons. I have mild interest in The Mandalorian, but I'm definitely not bothering with Disney+ until every episode is out.
-
I didn't have much interest in Disney+ until Paul talked about Mr. Boogedy. It was an episode of The Wonderful World Of Disney that we taped when I was a kid. There was also a sequel called Bride Of Boogedy. If they have The Richest Cat In The World on Disney+, I might have to at least get a free trial.

In a new Bonus Reel, Paul & Amy are joined by Rian Johnson, writer/director of "The Last Jedi" and "Looper", to talk about the three films he would add to the AFI list, and his new movie, "Knives Out."

There is another topic covering Swordfish not getting released yet. I believe Dan Engler hinted that it's not likely to get released

Oh shit! I only watched the first episode so far. This makes me want to have an episode with Paul, June and Jason competing against each other.
-
Nailed It is back with new episodes and Jason is one of the guest judges again.

I normally hate Christmas romance movies but I might have to check this out.

The person asking Amazon to send them Bruce Lee movies doesn't make sense but the is a very tenuous connection between Double Dragon and Bruce Lee. Characters in the original Double Dragon game are named after characters in Enter The Dragon. There is a Williams, Roper and Lee in both. Neither Williams or Roper made it to the Double Dragon movie because they were just generic bad guys you fought several of in the game.

Full disclosure, some things outside of his performance have also negative affected my opinion. That's not his fault, but I'll include those so people can at least figure out how big a grain of salt to take with my thoughts. I really disliked the whole "Can you believe Leo's never won an Oscar???????" vibe on the internet that was going on for a few years before this win and how he had to win for this particular performance or the Oscars are a sham. I could rant for a while on why that's a fundamental misunderstanding of awards in general but, suffice to say, I don't care for that mentality. The push that "Leo's a vegetarian...he ate meat for this role" as if he couldn't act like he was eating meat. I also disliked the movie itself which can definitely hurt my opinion. I think the camera work in a lot of this was particularly bad because it "enhanced" his performance in a bad way. I'll say, at the very least, I saw The Revenant before it came out. So, I didn't come into it with high expectations that people over sold me on it. For Leo himself, I think he's a good actor in general but he has a penchant for very theatrical, verging on "Look at what a great actor I am" style acting. That works most of the time for him because it fits the movies he's in. In The Revenant, it felt like he gave into his over the top tendencies and was A-C-T-I-N-G the entire time. I think it felt very broad and comical at times. I don't think it fit the character or the tone of the movie.

It would be awfully difficult for me to say someone deserves an award for a performance I never watched. We'll have to agree to disagree.

Musical Mondays Week 80 The Greatest Showman
grudlian. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Just imagine a journalism movie like All The Presidents Men or The Post but it's about News Of The World. -
I disagree. This was a particularly weak year for lead actors at least among those nominated. I genuinely think Leo's performance in Revenant was bad (which I guess I'm in the minority on this) and he was outdone by the bigger supporting accepted like Tom Hardy and Will Poulter. I wouldn't want Eddie Redmayne to win just because I thought the movie's treatment of trans people was not bad but misguided. I thought Michael Fassbender, Bryan Cranston and Matt Damon were good in their roles.

Musical Mondays Week 80 The Greatest Showman

I think having a fictional character who is clearly inspired by Barnum would probably be better for me. Or at least not make him seem like he's the reason his side show performers are a big happy family. Imagine if, 100 years from now, there was a movie made about a scummy racist in 2019 but the movie made them seem like a father figure to the people he exploited. I'll admit I'm not an expert on Barnum. It's possible some of his side show performers lived slightly better lives under him than they would have as poor nobodies. So, idk. I did really like this movie when I saw it in theaters. I'm kind of harping on about this one thing but at least make the performers a family in spite of him instead of because of him. Honestly, that's my only real flaw with this. -

I like this movie a lot. The music is good. It looks great. But Barnum sold his "freaks" on their physical differences and racist ideas. He didn't think of them as family. He profited off of them and treated them horribly. I'm kind of fine, or at least understand, whitewashing a movie to make a real life person seem not so monstrous by the cultural standards of today. I'm not fine changing that person to a champion of equal rights. -
I haven't seen This Boy's Life. So, I can't really say. I agree that he was great in Aviator but he lost to Jamie Foxx in Ray which is totally fair in my mind. That's the problem for DiCaprio. He's consistently great but most years there is someone I (and apparently Oscar voters) find better.
-
Nah, that should have went to Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master that year but I'm fine with it going to Christoph Waltz in Django over DiCaprio Now, if we're talking DiCaprio getting robbed for performances, I'd say What's Eating Gilbert Grape is the option.

Leonardo DiCaprio DiCaprio for The Revenant and Jacob Tremblay wasn't even nominated for Room that year. Sure, you could argue Tremblay was the supporting actor but I just really am still salty DiCaprio was nominated for that awful performance. I feel like the movie switched big time once they got to the Overlook. The movie turns more into a production design movie over anything else (and those sets are fucking awesome). I felt like the acting got way worse. We should be reading any number of emotions on Ewan Mcgregor's face as he roams the halls and there's kind of nothing there. I get people saying Rose acted out of grief because that's plot but I didn't pick any of that up in the finale from Rebecca Ferguson's performance. It's probably a lot harder to act as you just walk around sets alone or doing such silly stuff (as the plot gets by the end). So, I don't blame Ewan or Rebecca necessarily for their performances at the end, but I still thought they mostly were flat for the climax.

I voted to keep this but I will certainly never watch this again. There are a few "detail the difficulty of veterans returning from war" movies and maybe one of those can be on the list instead. I don't remember any of the others I've seen being as good as this though.

The Jacob Tremblay scene was my absolute favorite (or I guess least favorite) because of how unsettling it was. It was the only scene to really get to me. I also really liked the scene where Abra's mother called her. A lot of movies would just leave that thread open because it's about a tertiary character. But just imagining everything from the mother's perspective was horrifying and hilarious.

This was my problem with it: Stephen King. Most every problem I had with this was the writing and it followed the book pretty closely. Some of this, especially in the last act, seems very silly or under developed which is a problem I had with the book. There is one minor change I think ultimately makes the final act pretty weak. In the book, the True Knot people had basically no steam stored and continuing going after Abra because Rose is desperate. It's basically win or die as I recall. In this, it makes Rose seem stupid to confront her alone knowing how powerful Abra is. I agree with everyone that the actors were great. Rebecca Ferguson is perfectly cast and exactly what I pictured when I read the book. How is Eean McGregor getting better looking with age? Jacob Tremblay was, as usual, the best thing in every movie he's in. Overall, I liked this okay but it didn't wow me or anything.
