Musical Mondays Week 76 Preview (Cameron H’s Pick)
grudlian. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Wasn't Rockula you're last pick? You've really got a thing for vampire musicals it seems. -
I'm curious how the Let It Be release will be handled. Ringo and Paul (presumably George and John as well) have said they didn't want it released on DVD because it shows them not so loving as their image. The release next year will have a new version restored by Peter Jackson which will be interesting but I think releasing the original version is important as well (especially since it's been released before). It's not my life on display though. So, I get why they wouldn't want the dreary original to be as widely seen as a potential friendlier version. And speaking as someone who owns Give My Regards To Broad Street on DVD, it's a tough watch. Other than No More Lonely Nights coming out of the sessions, the isn't much positive to say about it.

How many people said Give My Regards To Broad Street should be on the AFI list?

I'd love a release of Clock Tower but Night Trap has a bit more notoriety than Clock Tower at least in the US with it being partly responsible for ther game rating system. I assume that is why it got the re-release. I'm not sure Clock Tower has the following even though ther games are better. Night Trap definitely has its own campy charm.

I'm not sure how I heard of it either. Maybe it was the same article. The sequel on PS1 is definitely a continuation of the story and basically game play but it's this to Creepers are mostly nonexistent I think (not totally sure since I played both years before seeing the movie). I want to say my first play through was a couple hours. If you know what you're doing it's maybe half an hour and I definitely got all the endings in an evening. So, you could probably just watch a let's play in youtube to check it out.

This over Ben Hur any day. I'm not a huge fan of Spartacus but I have liked it every time I watched it. Ben Hur has always felt like homework outside of the chariot race. I think it's kind of strange that they never mentioned Lord Of The Rings as one of the epics on the list because I'd take it over Ben Hur, Spartacus and maybe Lawrence Of Arabia (but, like Lawrence, LotR isn't really American in my mind and doesn't belong on the list). I think it's kind of weird that, for all the episodes that they've asked "Does X need to be represented this many times?" and the discussion of how many times Kubrick is on the list isn't really brought up (was it in another episode?) Taking it in the direction of "How many movies do we need that were inspired by McCarthyism" seems strange. High Noon, On The Waterfront and Spartacus are all quite different and you could easily watch them without picking up their shared origin.

If you really like Creepers, I recommend an obscure game for the SNES called Clock Tower. It was a Japanese exclusive so you'll have to emulate it and get a translation. It's not a adaptation but it's very clear that Creepers is a heavy inspiration.

Musical Mondays Week 75 Fear of a Black Hat
grudlian. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I watched this a ton in high school and college. I liked it so much I made a cassette of all the songs so I could listen to the music. I watched it for the first time in at least 15 years a few months ago and was surprised how well it holds up (except for the homophobic scene with the choreographer). It is sharp and funny and a pretty solid parody of hip hop at the time. I still argue there's no justice that CB4 was pretty well known at the time and this very superior movie flew over the radar. -
I remember kind of liking Disclosure when it came out but, from what I remember of it, it's going to be a tough rewatch. Congrats, Polly. This is twice in a row, right?

Musical Mondays Week 75 Preview (Graham S’s 1st Pick)

I guess I could have read your whole comment where you specifically mentioned tubi before commenting. I was just kind of psyched this movie got picked. -
It's been too long since I last saw the miniseries, but I might agree with you on most of this. At the very least, I don't think the first movie is way better than the kids part of the miniseries. Certain things are better but it's certainly not light years ahead of it like some people have said. I also didn't find the first one to be scary whereas I found the kids part of the miniseries very scary (probably from seeing it as a child). The adult version here is way better without question. For all its flaws, it doesn't look cheap like the miniseries did (which is weird since the kids part of the miniseries doesn't look cheap). It also cut out Bill's wife's story which is completely unnecessary. I'll say straight up that I thought Finn as young Richie was annoying. That's partly the character as written but god I wanted him to shut up in so many scenes.

I've read the book and seen the original miniseries a couple times. The adult story is just not as strong and I don't think I've ever heard anyone say different. I think it's a bit more complex emotionally and more meandering but I think that's kind of by design (in part because the book is almost as much about Derry as it is about either the group or kids). I'll say most of the stuff the changed and omitted is for the better. Maybe it's because I was young when I first saw the miniseries and younger when I read the book (late teens, early twenties?) and now I'm nearly 40. Some of the themes of growing up resonated with me in a way they didn't before. I still think the adult side is weaker by a wide margin but it worked more than I thought it would. I want to say the fortune cookie scene is straight from the book including the specifics of what comes out of the cookies. I wouldn't have minded seeing that toned down. It was the first scene where I thought "this is enough"

Musical Mondays Week 75 Preview (Graham S’s 1st Pick)
grudlian. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Oh yes! This was almost my pick last time and it was on my short list for next pick. It was free on Tubi a couple months ago. I don't know if it still is. -
It's going to be really hard to argue any Beatles movie belonging on any list of American films. I think A Hard Day's Night is a really solid movie that really isn't the best example of a movie about a band that isn't just a filmed concert. If you have any interest in musicians as media spectacle, I'd say it's required viewing but it does kind of require you to be a Beatles fan. I can't imagine how it plays for someone not already into the Beatles. Some people will argue that Yellow Submarine is good but oof it's boring and I think the animation kind of sucks.

Sesame Street?

I haven't watched this yet, but that's exactly how I felt about Dark Crystal as a kid. I eventually got into it watching it in high school but that's a long gestation. I'm very behind on Netflix shows but I'm wary about Dark Crystal.

The weird thing is that Black Christmas isn't even a huge name for a franchise to cash in on. I love the original but it's still a bit under the radar as far as slasher films go. I think a straight remake would get laughed at in 2019 because lol who even answers phone calls anymore let alone enough to get harassed on the phone. Taking it in this direction still seems like a boring idea though.

Yes, it's the Rosario Dawson, Katherine Heigl one.

I think the library keeping records is entirely dependent on the library or library system. My library switched to some new thing in the last year and I can now keep track of everything I've borrowed since the switch. I don't know what the librarians would do with the information but they certainly have access to it. I will say the librarians probably have a vague knowledge of the kind of stuff people borrow if they come in all the time. They have definitely commented on my borrowing. I try to at least throw in a "good" movie if I'm also borrowing a particularly terrible HDTGM movie (and I chose to not get Striptease from the library at all).
-
That's exactly it. I'm pretty sure they mention Lawrence Of Arabia in the commentary track on this episode.
-
Me, too! Of the clearly majority British films on the list, I think this one has the least amount of potential claim to be American. Outside of Anthony Quinn, was anyone involved in this American? I believe the AFI has used American funding as a reason to claim a film is American, but I believe the majority funding for Lawrence of Arabia is also British. Spoiler alert, I'll also be voting no on Bridge On The River Kwai for the same reasons. To add to your Simpsons references, there's another purely visual one from Bart The Daredevil. It's Bart arriving on a skateboard to jump the gorge is an intentional nod to Alec Guinness's long take arrival in the desert.
-
As you acknowledged, the BFI did a top 100 list of British films and I think given the context of talking specifically about British films versus American films, I think it's a logical conclusion that she was talking about this specific list even if it is less commonly referenced.
-
If you look at the BFI list (not the Sight And Sound list), the only films that are on both are Lawrence Of Arabia, Bridge On The River Kwai and A Clockwork Orange. Doctor Zhivago was on the original AFI list but isn't on the current list.

I don't think I had a crush in 1st grade. I was kind of a late bloomer on that front. I remember thinking a few girls were cute for a day or two then losing interest (maybe that's the equivalent of a 1st grade crush). I can tell you I definitely had a mild crush on Christine Lakin, who plays the Nottie in this, when she was on Step By Step. That was well after 1st grade though.
