I think this is an interesting take I that thought of. I don't think the movie intends it but the most beneficial reading. I should say I don't have an issue with sexual assault in a movie (depending on how it's handled and I think it's handled fine here). I just think it's gross and disappointing that anyone's going "why him? what's so great about Benjamin" with this movie when, in many other movies, we wouldn't attempt to justify a sexual predator's actions with how sad they are with their lot in life.
-
One thing that they don't mention that I think could explain Benjamin quite a bit is that Benjamin went to college at 16. I thought maybe he only got an associate's degree since he graduated at 20 but they explicitly state he was in school for 4 years. I think being socially awkward, going to a men's only college, being much younger than everyone could definitely be a reason why he is the way he is. I think it's kind of weird that Paul and Amy kind of gloss over that Mrs. Robinson is basically a sexual predator in this. They mention Benjamin being prey but they also talk about how sexy and confidant she is repeatedly. I get Benjamin it's old enough to make his own decisions but she's still twice his age and he's very clearly saying no to her at every step of the way. I was really grossed out by it. I don't know if that completely colored my opinion of the movie as a whole. I can appreciate this movie on technical levels. It's well written and acted. The cinematography is great. But this didn't do anything for me.

Well, his whole family. They are as portrayed as racist, Italian stereotypes. The father only maybe comes across as better because we spend enough time with him to see his "transformation."
-
That's fair. I wasn't aware Dr. Shirley was against making a movie about it. That definitely is going to make me rethink some stuff. I still think Viggo did a great job regardless of if it's a stretch to play the role. I see how "loud Italian thug" traditionally gets played in movies and Viggo had way more nuance to it even compared to people in the same movie. I don't think Mahershala Ali was stretching any more than Viggo was for his performance.

As someone who doesn't follow Oscar voting rules, this and what they speculate in the episode makes sense to me. I'm still not sure how Bohemian Rhapsody got this far though. At least Green Book is competently made and well acted. Bohemian Rhapsody is very poorly acted (yes, even Rami Malek) except for the Live Aid section which is fantastic. It gets a lot of crap for being generic but generic isn't its main problem since it's so awfully made. A Star Is Born is generic in that it's a remake of a remake of a remake but it's well done.

As much as I find Green Book to be not worthy of praise, it's still mildly enjoyable. At least the acting is genuinely great. It's just misguided by white/straight privilege. So, it's bad in that aspect but it's not horribly made or anything. Especially when you add in this Rashomon-esque Dr. Shirley and his family giving opposite descriptions of the relationship with no real reason to lie (except Shirley himself said "friendly" not "friend" and I can acknowledge he might have felt uncomfortable saying on record their relationship was strictly professional). So, I have slightly more mixed feelings about it. Skin uses "black face" to try to make a point. It's like an even less funny Soul Man but with neo nazis. I was fucking angry after seeing it. I would 1000% watch Green Book again over Skin. Skin is, in my mind, maybe the worst Oscar nominated movie in years let alone winner.

Maybe not as mean as it deserves but it's certainly not a glowing review.

Musical Mondays Week 60 True Stories

The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads. Sorry, but I had to do it. -
I thought it was going to be real. Then I thought it was a comedian because of how awful it was. Then I realized, no, it's real.

I...uhhh...that song. Wow. Now that there is an official topic, I want to repeat my hatred for the short Skin. Truly a garbage movie.

I think there were probably a lot of voters who simply thought these were progressive choices because they dealt with race (and LGBTQ issues with Green Book). They probably thought they really nailed it and these choices are the most Oscars So White choices they could have awarded. That's a real shame to say because people of color were recognized this year. It's been said a lot but Green Book is the Driving Miss Daisy of 2018.
-
I'm even angrier that Skin wron beat live action short. It was even less socially aware, related to race movie than Green Book.

I thought he said it was on Hulu and I was thinking this free month of Hulu is really paying off. It's not on there. Pen15 is on Hulu though and it's amazing.

I regret to tell you that you're tastebuds are faulty because Tagalongs rule. But I'm not sure why Girl Scout cookies are such a big thing. The two most popular cookies are Thin Mints and Samoas (aka Caramel DeLites) have analogues you can get year round, cheaper in any grocery store. Keebler, who owns the company who makes Girl Scout cookies, makes Grasshoppers and Coconut Dreams. Outside of actively wanting to support Girl Scouts (which is a great organization), there's no reason to hoard Thin Mints in your freezer. I'll throw out that Do-Si-Dos are wildly overrated and Trefoils are underrated but just okay.

My bad. I don't know how I missed JammerLea's. When Paul read your comment, I thought "someone provided historical examples but I don't remember who. So, I assumed it was a different post that didn't make the cut. Knowing it's the same post though...well, I've got my pitchfork ready. Nate definitely does research but I don't know if that includes selecting forum comments.

While I know Paul reads the board occasionally, I'm sure comments for the episodes are given to him by some earwolf employee and picks from from those edited comments. He may never have seen your David and Goliath part.

I know I've heard her talk about her dad doing the commercials. I probably mixed them up. -

Thank you for informing me that this exists. -
I really like that a forum favorite, Monster Trucks, gets a shoutout. Why isn't Monster Trucks on the AFI list?

The Bill Murray selling Suntory was based on the Akira Kurosawa and Francis Ford Coppola ads. -

For Gangs Of New York, I saw something where they had to make up Daniel Day Lewis' accent because we genuinely don't know how people sounded then. They can do some educated speculation. There might be recordings from people in the area who were alive at the time or written descriptions. It would be inaccurate to have Bill The Butcher speak with a modern Brooklyn accent in the 1860s. If we have to speculate how people sounded 150 years ago, 2000 years is a real shot in the dark. We don't even know definitively what Latin sounded like. We certainly aren't going to know the accent people used to speak it. -

I just watched this for the first time last month. It was interesting. -
You might want to add Hale County This Morning, This Evening to your list. I watched it this weekend and it has some superficial similarities to Killer Of Sheep which I know you like. It's a documentary about lower income black families, doesn't have a strong plot. There are still some powerful moments and has some great visual shots. I also finally saw Minding The Gap and I'll echo what everyone has been saying about how great it is. I think it's airing on PBS tonight. So, check your local listings.
