    Listener Questions Special

I just thought it seemed similar to Singing Detective which we did recently helped knock it out of consideration. But I haven't seen it. So, maybe it's the similarities are just on the surface.

    Listener Questions Special

I know Amy and Paul read here or have said they do in the past. I suppose they might have read something if we had asked. Or maybe not. A lot of stuff that's come up here previously was asked on the episode. This is a long post too say "idk... maybe????" Pennies From Heaven was on my short list for Musical Mondays though. It's getting a little more push now thanks to Amy.

    The "I Voted" Thread

Yeah. It's still a bit too early to say what will happen now that Sessions is gone but it's not, at best, a stumbling block. I just didn't expect it today but maybe I'm just naive.

    The "I Voted" Thread

I was feeling good...until Trump fired Sessions and replaced him with an AG who is quoted as saying he'd limit Mueller's budget enough to make him ineffective.

    The "I Voted" Thread

I would have liked control of the Senate also but that was really reaching.

    The Bachelor (1999)

I remember seeing this on tv years ago and thinking it was okay as a piece of romcom fluff. It's a remake of a Buster Keaton movie called Seven Chances which is legit good.

Don't blame me. I voted for Kodos. And in the real election

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

Oh I'm very familiar with this.

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

Or really hammer home the tragedy. Let her collapse...then show her OD... then no one attends her funeral... then, I don't know, the last shot is a dog peeing on her unkempt tombstone?

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

It depends on if you find being physically alone or being emotionally alone despite surrounded by people who adore you is more tragic.

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

This is what threw me off about her dying. She just collapses and I knew Joplin died from an OD. I don't know what pills Rose took. So, heart attack from pills, booze, exhaustion, stress of performing is possible. I guess death on stage is a more dramatic movie moment than shooting up alone in a hotel room.

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

I read the reason for her avoiding them, at least when they see them from the car, is thinking she'd be a disappointment. "They supported me and look at me. They are literally washing an American flag and I'm a coked out hippie. They don't need to see me like this." Since get basically nothing on their relationship, we can only speculate. Based on every other scene in the movie, it wouldn't have turned out great for Rose and there would be some screaming.

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

You're giving me a great idea for a remake of The Rose starring Will Smith.

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

That's a fair interpretation but it's a really weird thing to throw into the final 30 seconds that the actress playing the protagonist is eulogizing her in a movie that otherwise has no post modern narrative playfulness.
  15. I say, should they do a Christmas movie, it should be 12 Dates Of Christmas.

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

Exactly. Give the song some emotional resonance. As is, it's just a sappy love song made all the sappier because it's irrelevant. I'd argue a more powerful move would have been absolute silence because now the music is over. As gigitastic said, it's trying to be both roles of A Star Is Born. If the had been literally anyone in ther movie who loved her to write this song, cool. But Bette is eulogizing herself with this song I guess? Either have it be her final song or someone who cared about her sing it. We instead get David Keith at a tribute and he met her yesterday. I don't know if that's because she truly had no one in her life at the end or if the filmmakers thought "well, he's the only character who hasn't been unlikable the audience will recognize." At least show a bunch of fans at the memorial singing The Rose instead of one guy. It's just disappointing because it's a really solid movie that completely bones the ending.

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

Yeah. The only thing I knew about this movie was the song. I assumed the movie would show her writing it or would be a movie about love since that's what the song is about. So, I thought her death was just passing out from exhaustion/drugs/stress/whatever. Then there is the guy she just met at a tribute. I'm like "wtf, she died?" Then it cuts to The Rose song and it's a different genre of music, different vocal style, and unrelated to the movie. I don't think love is like Bette Midler in this movie.

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

This movie was really interesting to me because my experience with Bette Midler music is The Rose, Wind Beneath My Wings and the like. So, hearing this style of music, it was surprising she doesn't do more of this. I know she had fans before this, but this seems like it really thrust into a larger audience. It seems strange not to do more music like this unless it was just killing her vocal cords. Or she's doing this music and I'm totally ignorant to it.

Musical Mondays Week 51 The Rose

If Cinco hadn't said up top that it was set in 1969, I would have thought it was set in 1979.
  20. I think we need to be friends? It said the room is locked currently. I should be there for the 9pm show. My name on there is grudlian.
  21. I hate to be a stickler but the list is titled "red and green." I need to see both colors somewhere in their clothes. You work with the posters? As in you make them?
  22. 1. lol 2. No one is wearing green on Merry Ex-Mas or Home For Christmas Day. They are wearing blue plaid and turquoise respectively. 3. Cameron H, there is Love At The Thanksgiving Parade which I think qualifies as a Thanksgiving movie. 4. Seriously, lol. 5. Why do so many guys have stubble?
  23. I'd like to visit that universe but it's a net downgrade in my opinion.
  24. Who needs a mullet when you have this look in your repertoire? This is from the same year as The College Years. So, I think we know who would make the better RA.
  25. On the surface, yes, it doesn't seem like a David Lynch movie but there are little touches that sneak in that are undeniably him. Just some dialogue stuff and Lynch's fascination with small town life that stick out. If you think I wouldn't watch Dennis Haskins in Skyscraper or The Rock in Saved By The Bell, you don't know me. I think Rock could really improve the role of Mike the RA from The College Years.
