Musical Mondays Week 49 Meet Me in St. Louis

Are women bringing dates to strip clubs?

Musical Mondays Week 49 Meet Me in St. Louis

I assumed they were the wealthy but ugly nerd stereotype who got dates despite their appearance.

Also, there's that whole thing where you think grandpa is going to loan his tux to him and I was ready to say the tux wouldn't fit an athletic high school baller if it's made for an old man... but grandpa is now her date? That's way more embarrassing than bringing her brother which was the original plan.

Yeah. I thought it was a vague comment on how expensive New York is. I would practically be homeless in NYC with my current salary but he's presumably going for a promotion since he's sticking with the same company. You can expect some lifestyle changes but a practical mansion to tenement house seems weird. Why take this job at all?

She's just a sociopath. Yeah. I was trying to figure that out. She seemed to be demure about singing a song about drinking. She called it "I was mmmmmm last night" as if they very idea was too naughty to discuss. But the rest of the movie is "I'LL STAB YOU TO DEATH!" Your explanation definitely makes sense.

This is weird but did anyone else notice Just seemed to turn off part of the lights from a light switch on the wall? The very first chandelier they turned off together, the lower half of it turns off when she touches the wall. Then they get together to turn off the rest of the chandelier.

I also thought it was weird he announced they are moving and six months later they haven't done anything to move. I realize cross country travel was much different 110 years ago but you'd think they'd have packed everything (if they're even bringing stuff). If it takes half a year to get ready for the journey, can you even turn down a position right before leaving.

Musical Mondays Week 49 Meet Me in St. Louis

This is really interesting because Halloween seems super tame now compared to the Lord Of The Flies bacchanal of early 1900s St. Louis. I can't imagine just letting kids run around burning furniture in the streets.

This is kind of how I felt. Partly because they obviously were going to get married, I wasn't really invested. Partly, I couldn't keep track of the guys because they looked the same. But Tootie is a psycho and I loved her but that family needs to get her in therapy. Does anyone know anything about early 1900s Halloween? Did kids burn furniture in the streets? Was throwing flour in people's faces a thing?
  10. I should be there tonight.

    E.T. The Extra Terrestrial

I don't think I mentioned this before but Paul and Amy make it sound like having a cornfield in your back yard is crazy. It's very clear they did not grow up in the midwest.

    Episode 198.5 - Minisode 198.5

Didn't Paul say on the boards they were doing Queen Of The Damned? I don't want to say that's legally binding but I don't know enough about law to say it isn't binding.
  13. I still can't make it. So, have fun, everyone. This is such a good/crazy movie.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

It looks like LOTR ranks really low on these lists but it's important to remember these other issues include foreign films. If you removed all the non-American movies, LOTR would be significantly higher. Losing to A Beautiful Mind is straight embarrassing though. That movie is garbage.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

Sorry. Yeah, that's what I meant. Stand in for the trilogy not really representative of the trilogy

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

I wonder if Tolkien has a very strict definition of allegory like his friend CS Lewis who was very adamant that none of Narnia was allegorical. I'm too lazy to look up the quote but Lewis said Aslan is not an allegory for Jesus despite being clearly representative. The gist of it was something like "I didn't set out saying in this world Jesus is a lion and then extrapolate that out to what that world would be." Now, I've never really thought of LOTR as an allegory (so, this is kind of pointless to bring up I guess). Just war and facing dark times and taking up the cause to save the world is pretty broad stuff. I've read theories that LOTR is an allegory for WW2 or other such things but I still just think it's a fantasy novel.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

Amy and Paul say a few times that Fellowship is representative of the entire trilogy, but I'm not sure I agree. I genuinely think Fellowship is more enjoyable than the others. If I were making a list, I wouldn't even consider the others. I don't really have a defense since these are effectively one movie and definitely one production. There is just an intangible element that elevates this one over the others for me.
  19. I'm not really arguing It's A Wonderful Life isn't a Christmas movie. I'm just using it as an example of a Christmas movie that doesn't spend a lot of time at Christmas. There is a Harry Nilsson song called Remember (Christmas) that literally never mentions Christmas. The story I've read is they added (Christmas) to a song titled Remember because that helps sales.
  20. Yeah. I definitely thought this was a Christmas movie. But it's probably like It's A Wonderful Life which approximately 40 minutes of Christmas and every one considers it a Christmas movie.
  21. Unless there's another Christmas song in this, that's about the only thing I know about this movie.
  22. I'm sure Jason is a lovely person in real life but he's still a stranger. The real question is would you let a stranger hold your baby? What if he was really funny?
