    Trailer Talk

The biggest problem facing this new trilogy is where do you even go now? Laurie alienated herself from her family and society as a whole. She gave up her life for this confrontation. She built a fortress and had plans with every contingency. Even when her estranged daughter sees Laurie was right and they get together, Michael apparently survives? I understand the killer in a slasher can always come back but this one specifically cut out eight movies (10 if you count the Rob Zombie ones) to recalibrate Michael Myers into a human figure again. And he's coming back? After Laurie's lifetime of preparation? It makes Laurie seem dumb if she couldn't kill him. It returns Michael Myers to an unkillable zombie. So what are we even doing? Consistency of the crew/vision is nice. You're right that the series needed it. I don't see how you raise the stakes or offer something more satisfying than the vindication of 40 years of planning and reuniting the family.

I loved the reboot as well. There's no way they follow it up with worthy sequel. I really hoped they would end the series with the reboot but the Halloween franchise always runs itself into the ground until the next reboot.

    Ganja & Hess

I liked this once it got going but that first half hour is very confusing. I agree that the movie really comes to life once Ganja shows up. I suspect the unconventional way this is told and presented is bad writing more than anything else. Paul mentions the shifting timeline and not knowing when parts of this take place (which really threw me as well). There are characters like Hess' son who show up but don't have any further scenes. In another movie, we'd call this out as confusing or bad writing. I wonder if Gunn thought this was clear (I'm unfamiliar with him. So, if someone else is more knowledgeable, I'd be curious to see their thoughts on him). I found the sound poorly done in that I often couldn't hear or distinguish what was being said. There's a lot of great stuff here. I appreciated Paul giving his take on the director saying "cut" because I hadn't considered that. The story of Ganja being called a slut in the snowball fight. Showing black people as wealthy, and educated enough to be multilingual was probably a big deal at the time since it's still kind of a big deal today. So, I want to have all that with just a bit more focus on the weaker areas. Has anyone seen Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus? I was curious because I thought Spike Lee could polish this to a really great movie but I guess it's largely verbatim dialogue and shot for shot.

    Night of the Living Dead

I haven't listened to the episode. I assume this gets discussed, but I remember being very surprised that the black man survived to the end when I first saw this in high school. Even now, that's a rarity. So, the double shock of him surviving only to get killed felt like such a powerful message. I'd put this in easily over Dawn Of The Dead. San is still good but has some sections that drag for me. I've always found the section with the bikers having a party kind of silly (but probably appropriate for the characters). Night doesn't have any dull spots that I remember but it also doesn't have a zombie head cut off by a helicopter. So, maybe a roundup toss up.
  5. Yeah. "Liberate" probably isn't the best word. I certainly don't think in any real way, Paul has been constrained creatively unless he imposes some limits on himself with his more traditional albums. I'm hoping the "stripped down" description from the email means it's a loose, semi-intimate album a la McCartney.
  6. Not sure what to expect from this. His previous McCartney albums have been to liberate himself from a band. I think his recent touring band are talented but I don't hear their voice as performers (or maybe they are very in line with what I imagine Paul wants). I'm hoping he gets weird with it though.
  7. Literally came here to post this and tag you.
  8. When watching this, I wondered what happened to the kids since I didn't recognize them from anything else. The two boys have no other screen credits to their names. It got me thinking about how weird that is. Disney was very much a studio system kind of studio. You'd see a lot of kids show up in their projects and nowhere else. It seems like even now Disney creates and molds their child actors pretty heavily until they don't have any use for them anymore. I didn't do any deep research on this but I have to assume these kids lives (as actors) were kind of made and ruined by this movie. It's pretty easy to imagine them thinking "our first role ever is in a Disney movie that's a hit" and that never lead to anything. It's also easy to imagine Disney going "we don't really have any roles for kids with thick London accents...so, let them rot until they aren't cute."
  9. You're right that it absolutely should have gone to Ruth Gordon from this list of nominees. I liked Elaine May in A New Leaf though and I recommend it. It has Walter Matthau as a broke playboy trying to find a dumb, rich woman to marry him. Don't rush out and see it but it's worth your time if you happen upon it.
  10. Honestly, Portobello Road and Age Of Not Believing are the two I'd be fine cutting. I don't think they are bad but the movie really feels like it slows down so much during them. It may just be the slow tempo though. Age of Not Believing does kind of introduce a problem of the oldest kid not wanting to go then just deciding to go immediately. I'm assuming he was more skeptical in the books Angela Lansbury giving up being a witch seems kind of antipodean to the entire movie. She was alway being a good caretaker of the children. They go in a big, fun adventure then it's like "no, you're just living a boring, regular life from now on." Probably a not insignificant number of people consider this "too political" now.
  11. I hadn't seen this in probably 30 years. Before watching it this time, I couldn't have told you anything about it except the animated armor. As soon as I started watching, it was all very familiar. I remembered most the scenes even down to specific shots. It's just kind of weird how our brains work. I'm not sure how much I would have liked this had I not seen it a lot as a child but I found this pretty charming for the most part. I think you could cut it down pretty easily to speed things up. A couple songs could go and the soccer game is awfully long. Beyond that, this is pretty good 70s Disney for me.

    Episode 250.5 — Minisode 250.5

Is the entire podcast just screaming whenever they discuss the US response? I wish I had watched it. I watched Cats on kast with Cinco then just didn't do it the day of. I forgot they had a day of show price hike and decided not to since I didn't buy in advance.

    Episode 250.5 — Minisode 250.5

I'm glad to hear Jason talk about quarantine because I get the feeling lately that I've been kind of extra about it. I haven't been in complete isolation but I've certainly been far more isolated than anyone I know. I feel like so many people are over this pandemic and just doing whatever they want now.

Graffiti Bridge also has Morris Day And The Time.

Ep 250 — Under the Cherry Moon

I agree with you. I'm basing this on fans of his movies more than what he's said as I've never heard him really comment on his movies. I suspect Prince found these characters charming and endearing. If you knew these characters in real life, ugh, you wouldn't want to know them. If someone other than Prince were playing these guys, we might be describing them as "brats" instead of "rascals." Prince is just so charismatic in real life that he can't not be watchable on some level.
  16. Hell yeah. I was just thinking the other day I need to watch this again sometime.

Ep 250 — Under the Cherry Moon

I haven't watched the movie, but I remember not liking the soundtrack. It was the first Prince album I wasn't really feeling.

Ep 250 — Under the Cherry Moon

By coincidence, Jerry Harrison was interviewed this week on U Talkin' Talking Heads 2 My Talking Head? and he brings up Under The Cherry Moon. It's around 2:10 into the episode and Harrison is not a fan.

    Unghouled Suggestions

I can't believe Hausu is on that list. It's HDTGM material in how utterly crazy it is.

    Frankenstein

I think some representation of the Universal monsters belongs as part of the film canon. At the very least in horror film canon. Their influence on horror is massive. There are some great horror movies that predate this, but none of them seem to have the reach they did. Maybe it's because other movies of the day aren't kind of packaged together as a thing. If Dracula or Frankenstein were completely on their own, they would have been big but maybe not as big.

    Frankenstein

I've always preferred the original. Just barely but I do. I've never really liked how much the monster talks in it. There was a lot of Christ imagery in it which I felt was overdoing it. Maybe that's more in keeping with the book, but I guess I'm not concerned with maintaining accuracy to the source material in this case. I'd put Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein as the two best Universal monster movies. At least of the originals. Of the sequels I have seen, Bride is the only one I think close to the original (unless we count the Spanish language Dracula).

Does anyone know how the live stream on Friday is working exactly? Is it streaming through the On Location Live website?

Musical Mondays Week 102 A Mighty Wind

Same. I felt like he was doing a very broad performance and that everyone else (except Fred Willard but I think that's by design) was much more grounded. I get Mitch is supposed to be burned out but it was cartoony in comparison to everyone else. I didn't dislike it but it put me off at first.

Musical Mondays Week 102 A Mighty Wind

I think the thing that causes your biggest complaint is the movie is improvised. So, the funniest takes are just whatever they said in the moment or the funniest bits overshadowed the actual plot threads being any resolution. So, if a three hour cut exists, it solves your problem but I bet that cut drags.
  25. I was going to do the 7pm, but some stuff came up. I should be able to watch the 9pm showing if you're up for it.
