    Episode 175.5 - Minisode 175.5

I'm not entirely sure how one could do what the Wachowskis (and the original novel) were attempting without some race and gender swapping. I guess that's just a white person making excuses for yellowface though. I definitely understand people having complaints about it.

    Episode 175.5 - Minisode 175.5

If we're talking black face specifically, Soul Man is the most recent major movie I can think of where black face was done without intentionally pointing out how offensive it is. Obviously, there are incidents of people doing it on their own every year but not in a major movie to my knowledge. If we're talking any other sort of white people browning up, Ashton Kutcher was in those popchips commercials five fucking years ago. And I don't think Mike Myers used makeup, but Love Guru is close enough.
  3. This is funny because I completely forgot she was in this and I was so excited when she showed up. I guess this explains why her film career never really took off.
  4. The commentary mentioned Naveen Andrews was worried Abbott learning the dance. So, I get the feeling he's not a great dancer. The Indian language they spoke was Punjabi according to the subtitles. That would make it, I think, a Pollywood. Im not an expert on the different Indian cinema studio systems. So, someone can probably correct me. In the commentary, the director kept referring to the film as Bollywood style. I don't know if she was using Bollywood as a catch all for Indian movies though. I know she said at one point "a real Bollywood film would do a slow motion shot when they show Aishwarya Rai seeing Darcy the first time."
  5. While we're taking about Naveen Andrews, him breaking out those dance moves are the beginning blew my mind. I'm pretty sure they lightened Aishwarya Rai's skin in that poster and darkened Darcy's. The DVD wasn't nearly so egregious and I knew who this was a love story between. https://goo.gl/images/9lNG7Q
  6. I watched a little bit of the special features on the DVD. Someone, I believe the director, said the actor really enjoyed visiting places and learning about India.
  7. I really liked this a lot in the beginning the more it was like a Bollywood movie. As it left India for London and the USA, it became less of a Bollywood movie which I thought was an interesting way of presenting the story. What I thought was not interesting was the guy playing Darcy.

    Episode 175.5 - Minisode 175.5

Looks like I'll be skipping this which I can't say I'm too upset about.

This is my reasoning for not liking Punisher as well. I think he'd make a really good limited series run but otherwise he isn't for me. Knowing that, would others here recommend I bother with the series? He was the only thing I genuinely liked in Daredevil season 2. So, I'm not against him completely but I'm struggling with the idea of dedicating 13 episodes to it.

The Thomas Jane Punisher movie is not particularly good, but I thought the Dirty Laundry short was really good.

I'm only vaguely familiar with Nathan For You. I've seen bits of it and liked what I saw. I Just never committed to it. But Paul's pick made me check it out the Finding Frances episode and it really is great. I'm glad he mentioned it (and mentioned it being free on the Comedy Central website) because I would have missed something really special.

Just to let everyone know, Jazz Singer is free on Tubi TV right now.
  13. It just isn't that flattering depending on the individual woman and her figure! I mean, no, that doesn't factor in.
  14. I don't have problem with the period. I just start tuning out during so many relationship movies set then and I'm not sure why As I say I liked the Keira Knightly version andI liked the Laurence Olivier Wuthering Heights. But a lot of the ones I've tried to watch were adaptations of the Bronte sisters and maybe it's their writing. I don't know.
  15. I've seen the Keira Knightly version and enjoyed it okay. Generally, I'm not a fan of any movie set in this time period for no real reason. Should I still plan on watching the miniseries at some point?
  16. I am 100% fine never ever watching Sucker Punch again.

    Episode 175 - Ultraviolet: LIVE!

Did anyone listen to the commentary on the DVD? Milla Jovovich did it and I'd really love to hear her speak about it if this is her opinion.
  18. I'm not any kind of expert because I've only seen a handful of Indian movies. I didn't have a plan either. I just saw imdb had a handful and there were a bunch on Netflix at the time. I generally liked what I saw but they all had flaws and they were all the same flaws (too long and kind of genetic feel good plots). I'd recommend checking out the Apu trilogy by Satyajit Ray. They aren't what people think of for Indian cinema but they are great movies.
  19. I'm pretty excited about this. I strongly considered selecting a Bollywood movie for my pick but not this one.

    Episode 175 - Ultraviolet: LIVE!

I'm curious if anyone else thinks that the biohazard symbols all over this are an intentional reference to Resident Evil. The Resident Evil games are called Biohazard in Japan. The Resident Evil movies all star Milla Jovovich. The writer/director wrote the movie specifically with Milla Jovovoich in mind.

A Love Letter to Paul and June

I want to echo whay everyone is saying. I don't use Twitter but I checked their feeds after reading this thread. Good for them for what they are doing and saying. It's one of the things I've missed about June not being on the podcast as much (not that I'm complaining. I know they are parents and working and busy). I've missed her jokes and insights into technology but I've also missed her calling out misogyny so aggressively. Paul and Jason do it as well but I loved hearing June not tolerate that shit.

    Episode 175 - Ultraviolet: LIVE!

In case you didn't see, there were two topics started for this episode and I made a dumb joke about the one with the most posts wins a blood war. When the topics merged, you became the new topic creator, and winner of the blood war, by default. Is there anything else you wish to know, my messiah?

Does this make SeaSkunk the winner of the Episode 175 blood war?

    Episode 175 - Ultraviolet: LIVE!

I did a little research into the movie because I was confused no one knew about vampires until late in the movie. I saw the unrated extended edition because it was the version my library had. Milla Jovovich's opening dialogue mentions long teeth and vampires explicitly. So, I found the changes between the theatrical cut and the extended edition and it looks like this was cut out completely. There are also some allusions to Nazi type behavior (identifying arm bands for hemophages, putting them in camps, etc.) The differences are listed here: http://www.movie-cen...ort.php?ID=3655 My question is why cut out the references to vampires? It's maybe five seconds long and basically the entire premise of the universe. The extended edition is only 94 minutes which is still very short. The rest of the movie still doesn't make a ton of sense, but I at least wasn't surprised by a revelation of what the basic premise is halfway through. Like the hosts, I was very embarrassed to watch this movie. I got it from the library and made sure to grab a legitimate good movie with it just so I didn't feel like a giant creep. The librarian still kind of gave the DVD a look when she saw it. Also, the Sega CD game with Corey Haim that Paul mentions is Double Switch. It's too specific a reference to be coincidence.
