Musical Mondays Off-Week 22 (Quasar Sniffer’s 2nd Pick)
grudlian. replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Anyone paying for rentals, try checking your local library. That's where I've found the Musical Monday and harder to find HDTGM movies. -
I thought Gene Kelly's "Say, you're...uhhh...Fred Astaire!" was a burn until Fred responds "What line of business are you in?" It's obviously all scripted but that has some heat on it.
-
I tried to make this same point to someone about Gene Kelly compared to Donald O'Connor in Singin' In The Rain to a friend. If you watch the Moses Supposes part where they both are dancing the exact same moves, O'Connor just seems effortlessly doing it and having fun if you look at their faces. Kelly looks like he's intense and focused. Now, I'm not a dancer of ANY kind. So, my analysis could be totally wrong. Maybe it's just different ways of approaching the moves. Maybe Kelly is a more technically proficient dancer. Kelly did the choreography and co-directed Singin' In The Rain and the weight of the movie resting more on his shoulders is what I see on his face. I don't know. Kelly just looks like "work, work, work" and O'Connor and Astaire in this movie look like "I'm getting to dance!" Not to take anything away from Gene Kelly of course who could dances circles around me.

This movie, as stated, was charming as could be. I was worried it might not be my thing but from the opening scene I was down. This, and the dancing obviously, stuck out to me too. They seemed to really walk the line one whay would have been allowed in Hays era Hollywood. The whole "What about the horse's dam" is striking considering we know Gone With The Wind paid fines for its use of the word "damn." If anyone is interested in this witty back and forth, pushing the envelope on acceptability dialogue, check out the Thin Man movies.

That's how I remembered it. I think this is how my parents were. I don't remember to many times where they forced me to watch some movie they liked as a kid. My dad made me watch The Dirty Dozen once in middle school. That might be it. But I was also willing to watch any movie. So, I wasn't hard sell.

The only thing I've ever seen from Thomas The Tank Engine is this clip. All I could think is no, Henry didn't deserve that fate, Ringo.
-
Thank you for clarifying that. I was getting worried.

That was my thought process. "Is he a vampire now? Is that one of his serial killer personalities? Part Vlad The Impaler? No, I think he's just licking her again."
-
I'm curious if I'm the only one who was stupid enough to think "Is Sid 6.7 also a vampire?" when this happened?

Does watching the Rankin and Bass Santa Claus Is Comin To Town count as having seen a Fred Astaire movie? Because that's the closest I've come. -

I listened the the episode again and Kumail pointed out that the careers of the probably two most prominent little person actors, Warwick Davis and Peter Dinklage, could not have more different careers. Outside of Life's Too Short, I'm not sure I've ever seen a Warwick Davis role where he wasn't playing an unrecognizable creature. At least he's working regularly. Jason and Paul also said the flute made no noise which confirms what I thought. I know there was a theme played when the flute was out but I'm not sure it was supposed to be the flute itself. The flute theme would sometimes play before Postmaster P had the flute in his mouth. His fingers never moved or covered any holes so it couldn't change notes. So, there's no way the flute could possibly made the sounds we hear. The subtitles also said [blows] instead of [plays flute] or similar which I typically see with diagetic music. But I also can't rule out the film being this incompletely made. So, maybe that music was supposed to be the flute? I'm legit not sure. -

I gave up playing video games by myself or possibly watching a different movie at home by myself. -
Musical Mondays Week 22 Bugsy Malone

All these ideas are excellent and now I wish there was some studio doing these. -
I'm really torn on Russel Crowe after this. The description of him demanding he perform oral sex on an actress despite being told not to disgusts me. But then I hear he demanded that Staying Alive music cue and I think, "Well, maybe he's a genius." Also, this is really a nitpicky pet peeve. IBM, IBS and ATM are not technically acronyms. Acronyms are on abbreviations that form a pronounceable word. Scuba and laser are acronyms.

I'm probably going to watch Blade Runner 2049 again some time soon. I'll have to keep your thoughts in mind when I do. I can understand the criticisms of Ana De Armas' character but I can't blame that on her.
-
I'll agree with firsttimecaller. It's a really great science fiction movie and Denis Villenueve is cementing himself as one of my favorite newish directors. I have some minor quibbles but overall it's worth checking out for fans of science fiction or the original. I have to admit I don't know what firsttimecaller is talking about with Sylvia Hoeks though. She only had one scene that left any real impression on me and it was a plot moment not necessarily her. I don't think she was bad by any means but the person who really blew me away was Ana De Armas.

If someone doesn't like Last Train To Clarksville, they are wrong. Not you. -

I'm curious what everyone's ideas are for other movies that could use the Bugsy Malone treatment. If you had to make a movie or tell a well known story with kids instead of adults, what would you pick? I've always thought a kids version of Cabinet Of Doctor Caligari would make an interesting, maybe not necessarily good, play. The Porpoise Song for sure -
Musical Mondays Week 22 Bugsy Malone

I made it about 15 minutes before I started tuning out and checking my phone and I watched it on DVD. So, video quality wasn't it.There was something very usettling about this to me and I'm not sure what it was. I could say having children portray gangsters or flappers is off-putting but I've been able to watch things like Taxi Driver where Jodie Foster was even younger and plays a literal child prostitute without issue (I mean, beyond child prostitution being objectively awful that is). So, I don't know why this was so weird to me. You're so right about the singing. Not only did the voices not match, but the kids were not good at lip syncing either. -

I thought the Paul Williams music was very reminiscent of Harry Nilsson. So, I'd recommend checking out some of his stuff if you like the music. Specifically, his album Harry which is probably closest in style to this. -
The Tourist has Angelina Jolie who won for Girl, Interrupted and was written by Christopher McQuarrie who won for writing The Usual Suspects. Johnny Depp had also been nominated for Pirates at that point.

I think this Friday works for me. I'll know for certain tomorrow. -
Virtuosity. Paul says it's only available on Amazon to buy the DVD, but it's currently on YouTube in full.
