    Episode 178.5 - Minisode 178.5

I disagree because I feel the movie, for the most part tried to be very weighty and serious. It felt, to me, that Rian Johnson would occasionally go "This has been serious for too many minutes. Better throw in a joke." It switched gears between dark brooding and humor very abruptly. Except Finn who always felt natural with his humor and can do no wrong. I don't know. Maybe I'm being a bit hard on it. I definitely get why people love the movie way way way more than the nerds who are angry over it not being exactly what they dreamed it to be. EDIT: This is making feel like a real nerd rage dork over this and I swear I'm mostly positive about The Last Jedi.

    Episode 178.5 - Minisode 178.5

I feel kind of similar to your mom about it. I can point out some stuff I didn't like (and I'll second firsttimecallerlongtimelistnr that the humor felt way more forced than TFA ). I can name way more things that I appreciate about it. But I'm still very whatever about the whole movie to be honest. If people didn't bring up Star Wars everywhere, I wouldn't be thinking about it at all. I'd liken my reaction to seeing some big important classic movie that doesn't age well. I get it. I see why it was important, but ehhhhh. I'm sure I'll appreciate it more on a rewatch. That's pretty rough since you haven't even seen the newest one.
  3. Are we counting Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff separate from Will Smith? Because Miami is definitely top 5 Will Smith solo. Not sure top 5 overall.
  4. I wouldn't be surprised about this at all. Sister Act 2 came out a year and a half after Sister Act. That's not a really really tight turnaround for a sequel without a bunch of special effects but it's pretty short. Especially for a surprise hit with a start who want interested in making a sequel. Its either a repurposed script or written very quickly. Both options would explain all the inconsistencies everyone is pointing out.

    Episode 178.5 - Minisode 178.5

I understand that. I might watch this again tonight because I did genuinely enjoy the opening scene. I was really tired though and was forcing myself to power through it before bed. So, I kind of spaced out a bit then tuned in and could not believe what was happening. So, I think it deserves a more attentive watch for the craziness.

    Episode 178.5 - Minisode 178.5

I'm halfway through. Nine year old me would have loved it. Current me is not having a great time. Bronson Pinchot's performance is broad even for Bronson Pinchot.
  7. New math, and I'm not 100% on this, was a new method for teaching math. I don't know what was different about it just a supposedly radical departure from how math was taught up to that point. This was also back in the 1950s or 60s because it's something I've heard my parents talk about. So, I've never been sure if "new math" is what has been taught since then or what. Based on what my friends with kids and social media say, math is taught differently than when I was a kid. So, I'm not sure. I've heard "new math" or "they must be using new math" to describe confusing numbers but even that's pretty outdated. I think that's the joke in the movie though. The school is so outdated that they are finality able to do 30 year old teaching methods.
  8. I'm kind of surprised how much I enjoyed this. Maybe even as much as the original. It's kind of silly of you analyze it even a little bit but it's charming enough to bypass all that. I noticed that James Coburn sounds an awful lot like Edward Herrmann in places.

    Doug Loves Movies Challenge

I hadn't heard of the Doug Loves Movies challenge before this year but I had always wanted to average a movie a day before. I think I'd normally top out in the mid 200s somewhere. This year I logged 432 movies on letterboxd. I count 45 movies I had seen before for a total of 387 movies. I also watched 130 movies from 2017. My favorite discoveries (of old movies) were The Human Condition trilogy, A Face In The Crowd and the works of Powell & Pressburger. My biggest disappointment (for an old movie) was probably Phantom India.

Also, I just sat through Bright. That is definitely in my bottom 10 now. Oof, what a turkey.

    Episode 178.5 - Minisode 178.5

This for sure. I really wanted to watch this as a kid because I liked Perfect Strangers and Night Court so much. I seem to remember my parents not wanting me to watch it and I assumed it was because it was too adult for me. Now I assume it's because my parents didn't want to sit through it.

    Top/Bottom films of 2017

I thought It Comes At Night is really good but not really enough to make my top 20 for the year. I can see why it is divisive though. It was not what I was expecting. The trailer made it seem like much more of a horror film than it is.

I'm just glad someone else saw this movie. I feel like the only one. It was so good.

    Top/Bottom films of 2017

I still have a few movies I haven't seen but don't know when I'll get to them. So, just know I haven't had the opportunity to see Call Me By Your Name, I Tonya, Brawl In Cell Block 99, The Post, My Happy Family, City Of Ghosts, etc. Not that I'm expecting them all to be in my top 20-30, but they all look damn good. This is such a ridiculously good year for movies. Right now, I've seen 129 from this year and there are more I want to see. Not just feel compelled to because good reviews or expected Oscar nominations or whatever. And it's such a big step forward for women and people of color in movies this year (with so much more work in the future, of course). Movies directed by women and people of color didn't just do well with critics but people paid a lot of money to see Wonder Woman and Get Out and Beauty And The Beast and it feels good to see that happen for once. I'm listing this is no particular order because I get really anxious about ranking things. Get Out The Fate Of The Furious The Work Baby Driver Dunkirk The Big Sick Good Time The Disaster Artist Lady Bird Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (above here is probably my actual top 10 though) Blade Runner 2049 Detroit Lego Batman Logan Brigsby Bear Columbus Wind River The Florida Project Beach Rats Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992 Lovesong

    Top/Bottom films of 2017

I'm glad you pushed this movie so hard. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise and it's not a terrible movie. While that doesn't sound like praise, I hate hate hated the trailer so much. So, even kind of, sort of liking it is a big step up from what I expected to think about the movie.

    Top/Bottom films of 2017

This topic has me thinking if we'd like to do our own pseudo awards show. We've discussed a lot of movies and performances that probably won't get recognized by the Oscars. I thought it might be fun to do that here with people whose opinions I enjoy hearing. We wouldn't have to do it for all the awards. Maybe just the big five or something. If people are interested, here's how I think it could work. Just rank your top 5 or 10 from each category in order. #1 would be worth 10 points, #2 would be worth 9 points and so on. The one with the most points wins. People could PM me with their lists then I could post the results. I'm not quite ready to do a top movies list yet. There are still about a half dozen that haven't been released near me or I haven't made time before today that I suspect might make my top 10-20. Here's my bottom 10 though. 1. mother! 2. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword 3. Bitter Harvest 4. Baywatch 5. The Babysitter 6. The Mummy 7. The Book Of Henry 8. Wonder Wheel 9. The Great Wall 10. Fist Fight
  17. but if we all saved our work first we'd be good to pick up where we left off though right???
  18. This is one of those franchises that I weirdly never saw as a kid even though I was the exact right age to watch this a dozen times. Now I have the motivation I probably never would have gotten otherwise. So, I'm pretty excited to check these out.
  19. Maybe I'm getting the timeline of the movie mixed up but doesn't Superman interact with Lex Luthor midway through the movie? Before Luthor created Nuclear Man? Why didn't Superman just take him to the police then?
  20. I did really enjoy Nuclear Man pounding on Superman's head driving him into the ground like a nail. One thing I found interesting about the moon is I didn't know if we left the flags on the moon. Or, at least, not all of them. It turns out we did leave them. The Apollo 11 one is probably gone or destroyed since Buzz Aldrin saw it get knocked over from the rocket blasts as they left. The flags that do exist would all the bleached white due to their being no protection from ultraviolet rays. Micro meteors and abrasive lunar dust have probably ripped them to tatters supposing they weren't burned up by lunar blasters.
  21. This movie confused me so much even as a kid. I don't think I had ever encountered a movie I didn't like before and I wasn't sure how to process disappointment in a movie.
  22. I can't post too much right now because work is busy but I just want to say that June is the best!

Musical Mondays Week 27 Baby Driver

Her intro is great. I love the physicality she brought in it because she moved like Catwoman should move. I didn't think any of her scenes afterward lived up to that moment though. I admit to not being an expert on Vanessa but I've seen Sucker Punch. That's enough for me lol

Musical Mondays Week 27 Baby Driver

Everything on this list is subjective except being worse than Vanessa Hudgins. Girl needs to check herself on that because in what world? EDIT: Also, Anne Hathaway didn't ruin dark knight. She want great but that movie had a host of problems beyond Anne Hathaway.
