    Episode 167.5 - Minisode 167.5

I would expect Jim Wynorski angrier about being outed as a piece of garbage than about making fun of the movie.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

I think sexual cruelty on film where the cast and crew sign on and consent is fine. Whether or not I like the film is another thing (what I've seen of Salo, I don't recommend). I thought the making of Blue Is The Warmest Color unfortunately ties into the making of Chopping Mall because of behind the scenes problems. It's something that, for both movies, I found out about after watching them and it's really soured movies that I enjoyed. I do hope the making of Blue... really was just horrible because of long days and not what is hinted at though.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

You may want to look into the behind the scenes on this movie. I haven't heard the director comment on it but the stars have described the making of the movie as horrible and they'll never work with him again. I seem to remember vague allegations of abuse under the guise of the director being demanding of great performances. I don't know that the director of Blue Is The Warmest Color is as bad as the director of Chopping Mall but an sexuality explicit movie where young female leads refuse to work with the director again amidst hints of manipulation sounds like maybe he is.

Also, pretty sure Paul doesn't do, or does very little of, the research himself since he names Nate and Avril. He picks the movies and, like most of us, knows very little about the director beforehand unless it's an easily recognizable name which is argue Jim Wynorski isn't. And after the research was done, they made a point to include and address it in the show. It's brought up a bit lightheartedly but I don't go to comedy shows for a serious discussion. I like that they didn't ignore it which they easily could have. I definitely understand the hatred of the director and wanting to avoid his work. I can understand being uncomfortable with any movie that has gratuitous nudity with everything we know about Hollywood lying to and using women. June succinctly and perfectly advises women in the industry. Couple this with their history of pointing out creepy directors like Renny Harlin with The Covenant, I'll give then a pass for not going into this knowing about Jim Wynorski's scumbag life.

I listened to the commentary for this. In between being misogynist creeps, they confirmed this.

I was able to watch Garbage Pail Kids as a kid and didn't hate it. As an adult a few years ago, Garbage Pail Kids was absolutely nauseating. Something about the costumes and the voice acting was revolting to me. I couldn't make it through the movie even fast forwarding. I won't even attempt to watch it again for the podcast.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

Sorry for the double post If this is the woman about whom they discuss high waist pants, these pants are neither jeans nor khakis. They look like chinos. Jeans are pants made from denim cloth. Khaki is just a very light tan color and, unless color grading or lighting is off, these aren't khaki colored. Chinos is a type of fabric that these pants are commonly made from.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

Correction: This movie came out before both Short Circuit and RoboCop. Short Circuit was only a couple months after Chopping Mall, but RoboCop was a couple years later. Super nitpicky correction: The robots in this are more like ED-209 from RoboCop than Robocop himself. I think this scene bears a striking resemblance to the opening scene of Chopping Mall and the scenes where the Protectors refuse to acknowledge badges.
  9. From the same website: Granted, this is talking about Rapture/Debbie Harry from a modern perspective and whether or not the song/she deserves to be canonized. That's not really the same thing as talking about it at the time and credibility. I have pretty mixed feelings about it. So, my speculation leans negative and, therefore, maybe not accurate. It's always felt a bit like appropriation done with genuine admiration on Harry's part. This is definitely true. It's also one of my biggest beefs with The Get Down. The rap in that is way too advanced for what anyone was doing in the late 1970s.
  10. I'm no expert but I never thought it gave her much street credibility. I figure it's similar to how people of color saw Elvis bringing rock n roll to the masses. There's probably some begrudging respect but probably way outnumbered by the people who realize rap would have made it to white audiences without a white person performing it. I would assume including Debbie Harry was for marketing it to people who otherwise had little interest in rap. The rapping part of Rapture is pretty bad and easily the worst part of the song in my opinion.

    HDTGM Classics vol 1 Burlesque

You're right. The scene that really stuck out to me, and Jason mentions in the podcast, is Cher teaching Christina Aguilera how to put on makeup. This is supposed to be some revelatory scene but I'm sure Christina has never looked worse in her entire life. It's laughably bad. I assumed, at the time, the makeup artist was using stage makeup meant to be visible from the back of the house but looks bad in close-up. So, it kind of made sense to me but a female director might have said "Can we not make this naturally beautiful woman look hideous in a scene about applying makeup properly?"

    HDTGM Classics vol 1 Burlesque

Is this because a woman wouldn't have felt the need to have lengthy shots ogling Christina Aguilera? Even though the movie has an intended audience of women who probably don't have much need or desire to ogle Christina Aguilera?

    HDTGM Classics vol 1 Burlesque

Based on the movie, I couldn't say. Singing while dancing sometimes erotically. I've seen live burlesque once. The only thing I saw in this movie that I would define as burlesque was the part where Christina is dancing with feathers. If you want to see burlesque dancing in a movie, please watch Mrs. Henderson Presents instead of this.

Echoing all the love for KBell singing. They give Cher a basically a musical soliloquy even though she's not actually in the burlesque show. Am I to believe the drug addict watching her maybe boyfriend date the woman who also has her job can't get a song? The one who suggested live singing in the first place? You are diverting attention from me? For THIS? There's no way you love Burlesque more than me?

I wish I had a baby to get me out of watching large segments of the movie. The closest I got was a cat walking in front of the monitor.

That was the only believable relationship the entire movie.

I was so angry when Indiana switched over but I must begrudgingly admit that it's not the worst thing in the world.

The rocky mountain oysters probably are in consideration then. They are just pig or bull testicles.

Raisins. That's the problem mixing them in with unsexy coleslaw.

I think we're missing the even bigger picture here: all coleslaw is gross.
  21. Honestly, I just really loved the whole Emotion album and loving Tom Hanks is universal. So, combining the two was unexpected and amazing.

    Episode 166 - Timecop: LIVE!

Trivia on imdb says this was intentional. Actor/Activist Ron Silva is supposed to appear to have plenty of time while JCVD doesn't.

    Episode 166 - Timecop: LIVE!

I really hope that guy told everyone he knows that he got to ask a question and would be in the episode. Then he's listening today and thinking "huh...I thought I was before that Donald Trump question. I must be next" until he realizes he was cut out when they go to second opinions. His friends are asking where he was in the episode and what he asked. He explains his story was about masturbating to Mia Sara. His friends explain that's a weird thing to talk about publicly and there's probably a reason he was removed. He's disappointed but maybe learned a valuable lesson.
