Theories on movie universes that could overlap
RyanSz replied to Smigg's topic in How Did This Get Made?
This is sort of like my conspiracy theory that Demolition man was the prequel to Judge Dredd: -
It's a weird thing where both he and Woddy Harrelson have gone through this career resurgence in the past couple years. It's like a reverse Nic Cage where he had his really good performances in the beginning of his career and now he does exclusively shitty movies. Except for Matt and Woody, they had okay starts followed by a long droll of bad movies/chick flicks/cheap horror movies, and are now really shining as actors getting nominations or wins at the Oscars.
-
It's one of two things. Either he is doing the Sally Field, where he is taking every big paycheck that is coming his way after winning the Oscar, or studios that have these shitty movies in the can for a few years are now releasing them in the hopes that a big, established name can bring in a few extra million in ticket sales.

Yeah I really didn't see a reason in the remake for why they would need Robocop in the remake outside of saving police lives. I mean hell, Detroit in the remake looks better than the Detroit of today, which actually sorta resembles the Detroit in the original film. I thought it was a fine movie, better than other remakes that have been made recently, though that isn't saying much. My problem was that I had the original stuck in my mind and that caused me to more see the differences and issues that I had with the remake. I felt like the Robocop of the original really portrayed the battle between the identity of a cop who has been put into a machine for a corporation. The remake Robo felt like a guy wearing a giant prosthetic, where he just had to come to grips with that and not really battle his programming as much. I really dislike the need to sensitize former hard R movies for a PG-13 rating, when it really doesn't work to bring in more customers. Even though both Robocop and Total Recall, two of the biggest examples of this, made just under 200 million, they were no where near breaking even despite their rating. I almost feel doing that alienates fans of the originals who were on the fence about seeing the movies, but upon realizing that studious are pulling back on the content, just decide to not even try with the movie.

I'm going to admit, the shiny objects line got me, so I will be joining you in that special place in hell I guess.

I remember Emilio vaguely suggesting in the middle of the movie that the whole thing may be the start of something bigger, but everyone just dismissed it.

Yeah magical realism is like satire in that no one has a set understanding of or its definition is always changing. Also being an English major, I saw numerous books that could be described as magical realistic but that shared very few similarities with one another. It is a very fine line between it and all out fantasy. For me the best way to describe it is where when the author wants to add something that would be considered fantasy but doesn't want to really explain its origins within the story, so they just make the characters in the book okay with what is happening around them and not worry about the flying horse or demon gangsters.

I really do wish that they would release the unedited clip where the kid was crushed by the steamroller.

So is it safe to assume that Adam Sandler's standing in Hollywood is at an all time low and the hosts' standing is growing with their various projects and films that we may start to see Sandler movies get skewered on the show?
-
Yeah this is like Black Dynamite to me, a very well played out and well done spoof on a genre with a homage tone for the most part.

Bitches leave is still one of my favorite quotes, because Kurtwood Smith did such an excellent job as the villain.
-
Yeah Garlin's sole joke was what I liked most in that shitty movie. I just remember catching it on TV a while back and seeing that part and recognizing him along with one of the guy's from Pirats of the Caribbean being the doughnut shop robber.
-
That's nothing, they are doing an American remake of the Raid three years after the original was released.
-
And Jeff Garlin.

The one thing that I can say about the reboot is that it is better than most of the recent remakes, but that isn't saying much. It basically took the whole essence of the original where a machine relearns that it is human and makes it with a guy who realizes from the start that he's basically wearing a large body prosthetic. Add to the fact that they remove the satire and violence that was a cornerstone of the original, and it was just a cheesy action flick. The third Robocop is nuts in how much they altered from the previous two. Killing the partner in the first 30 minutes, a lame child sidekick, and a fucking jetpack are just the tip of this shitty iceberg.

One thing I notice while watching this movie tonight was how Paul Walker goes so much farther as a whacked out cop, surpassing Nic Cage in Bad Lieutenant. He points a gun at a woman holding her baby, maims numerous people, and hides the fact that his wife killed two people. Nowhere does he ever call for help from his superiors or the fact that he has LOADS of guns from numerous crimes, that he had enough to convict the mobsters ten times over. I still love this movie for some reason but realize it would be perfect for the show.

Having only seen the trailer and having no intention of watching this tripe, I can't wait to hear how they try to explain the fucking hairstyles that Colin Farrell has in this movie. Add to this the fact that they only really started promoting this movie about three weeks before it came out and the fact it looks like the trailer was made by the same dude who made the Vampire Academy trailer, this should be a great episode.

Such a great article that connects to so many movies covered by the show. http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-famous-filmmakers-whose-dream-projects-were-disasters/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=fanpage&utm_campaign=new+article&wa_ibsrc=fanpage

Also if the cops in that movie were looking for the Punisher why not look for the retailer of all those skull knives that he used to kill almost EVERY person.

And that is the thing, for the most part the general public is able to see the difference between substance and shit when it comes to adaptations. They see these movies for what they are and decide to not care about paying for a ticket. I see it so much in the library where have worked for a decade, a series hits it big and then within a year there are 3-4 new series similar to that premise. Diary of a Wimpy Kid becomes HUGE in the kid book market, then all of a sudden you have Dork DIaries, Dear Dumb Diary, and Middle School, all with their own success but nowhere near Wimpy Kid. The best way to describe this is to picture a prospector finding a huge vein of gold in the mountains. People hear about this great find and head to that same location, looking for fortune as well. Unfortunately, in the time it took for them to get their, the original prospector has mined that area almost clean, leaving only a few small or okay sized nuggets. While they may get some riches, it is nowhere near what that first person received.

The unfortunate thing of movies like this is that the studios really show that they do not understand their audiences. As a Library Science major, I've had to study these trends where studios feel the need to buy up every single property after a movie is hot in the theaters. The reason that Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Twilight were such huge hits is because people read those books in droves and were willing to pay to see them in film form. For the most part they do not want to see the various knockoff series that spurt out after a book hits it big. They may be bestsellers in their own right, but they aren't the mega sellers that the series they are following are. Lemony Snicket, Mortal Instruments, Beautiful Creatures, and I Am Number Four show that it isn't the subject matter that fans are coming to see, but rather the story itself. Plus, this movie couldn't have come out at a worse time considering now that the big supernatural fad is zombies while vampires and werewolves are on the last of their last breath.

That is how you determine who the real fans of HDTGM are by wearing that shirt.

Speaking of shoe knives, how has the show not covered the ridiculousness that is the Angelina Jolie spy movie Salt?

Ah the joy of watching mid-90s career crash of Mickey Rourke. I feel so bad for him being movies like this.

There is a whole B/C story in Steel dedicated to how Shaq can't do a free throw, ultimately leading to the climax of the movie where he has to toss a grenade through a small hole in a broken window in order to save his life and one of his friends.
