Episode 220.5 - Minisode 220.5
Ofcoursemyhorse replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
See I've recently started going in the opposite direction and am slowly building my physical media collection back up. Including that I only buy physical copies of my video games as well. All the shenanigans with the FCC and net neutrality got me in the frame of mind that if I can somewhat lessen my reliance on streaming if there are sudden jumps in billing, it'll help out in the long run. -
Hide and Seek (2005)

It's akin to other psychological thrillers/dramas they've to previously covered. I'd argue that something like Color of Night is far more exploitative though. I would say that following through to the end is worth it solely to see a genuinely insane ending. This movie is to psychology as Godsend is to medical science. -

His take on Beauty and the Beast was also pretty fucking weird. -
It took Chris Evans a few tries to find the correct Superpower/Superhero role.

I feel like theres a 100% chance Jamie Kennedy would reach out to them directly in some incredibly awkward way if they ever covered one of his movies. -
Theres alot of darkly hilarious things in this movie, but most of it just hasnt aged particularly well. And I could very easily see June justifiably not having an awesome time watching this.

Counterpoint, this movie is awesome. Despite its many flaws it does feature an in his prime Eddie Murphy and a very solid performance from the always delightful Charles Dance. I will say that the scenes where they filmed Eddie Murphy running into the gangs house to rescue the warrior lady were filmed extremely poorly.

Such an astounding lack of success with this franchise. I think theres a fairly solid case to be made that the Roger Corman Fantastic Four is somehow the best of the bunch.

This trailer is fucking amazing, and despite that still fails to fully capture how genuinely insane this movie is.

Episode 219 - Drop Dead Fred: LIVE! (w/ Casey Wilson)

As has been established in previous HDGTM she should have gone into a restroom and splashed water on her face in order to do that. Let's not make excuses for bad decisions. -

Agree with everything here, and even though I knew that Drop Dead Fred was meant to be a stand in for her father it didnt even occur to me how on the money they were with both Fred and her father having English accents. I also have to commend the movie on its ending being a bit ahead of its time, I feel like it would have been easier for them to wrap things up with Lizzie ending up with Mickey. I really like the fact that the movie ended with her on her own. -

Lizzie is more destructive as an actual friend to Carrie Fisher than Drop Dead Fred is as an imaginary one to Lizzie. Also agree that the events that Drop Dead Fred "ruined" were all situations that Lizzie shouldnt have put herself in, and almost necessitated his intervention like: Moving back in with her emotionally abusive mother, and her god forsaken "living room that no one is allowed to live in." Stealing and piloting a friends home towards a random person on a speedboat she could never possibly catch up to. Allowing her Mother to dress her up like a mini version of herself and further convince her that failed marriage to an awful person was not only her fault but that she needs to win him back. Attending a concert in a mall. Buying an expensive dress despite her recent unemployment in an attempt to win her god awful husband back, despite the woman he cheated on her with being in attendance. And after all this she even invites him back into her home and desperately tries to cook a meal and please him into loving her again. Drop Dead Fred might not have the best judgement, but all i'm saying to everyone was Lizzie was making equally bad decisions all on her own. -

I was kind of bummed none of the hosts picked up on this. Theres a definite case to be made that Carrie Fisher intentionally left a known wild card alone on her boat in an effort to commit insurance fraud. Boats have all sorts of residual/maintenance costs and I cant even imagine what sort of rent she was paying to dock that thing where she was. So whatever the insurance payment was, it also came with allowing her to not live on a fucking boat which is a windfall in its own right. I think this scene also fights against the argument that Drop Dead Fred was doing nothing but causing chaos in Lizzies life. She made the choice to amateur captain her friends boat to chase after someone who vaguely resembled her husband from like 200 yards off. What was her plan if she did manage to close the gap, wave at him and say hi? This is what driving me nuts about all the people saying that Fred was a terrible friend. Honestly what is the the less embarrassing outcome in this scenario Fred sinking the houseboat, or her catching up to the stranger in the houseboat and realizing how much of a lunatic she actually is? -

So i'm a bit biased towards phoebe cates younger version. I know she gets up to questionable antics with Fred but to be fair, they are just exaggerated examples of what a small energetic child might get up to. You can ask my parents how much of a bad example Home Alone was on me as a child in terms of the interest in boobytraps it gave me. I know you think Fred is a terrible friend as an adult, because to be fair he is in a lot of cases. But I also think that all of the insane and rude things Fred says to her as an adult are absolutely things that she might internally feel about herself deep down without being able to admit it. When he's teasing her mother or taunting her about believing his note, I can absolutely see her saying those same things to herself. Even the scene where he embarrasses her at the party, she's at a ridiculously pretentious party to try and win back her terrible husband which he is trying to with all his effort to prevent. The movie even ends with her accepting that the chaos and excitement that Fred creates in her life is something she missed in her life and her personality. I also think that the movie sets up that Fred is very hurt at both being locked away for decades but also to see that Lizzie has become a shade of what she was as a child and how much her mother and Charles have combined to defeat her emotionally. And its a very lazy aside they did but they did have a scene where they showed that Carrie Fisher was actually very excited that her boat was sunk because she collected a ton of insurance from it. And while Fred might have not been into Mickey its not like his opinions or antics in the restaurant changed her feelings towards him or negatively affected their relationship. I think it was meant to show how true a friend Mickey actually was. In a time where she feels at her most out of control, he tells her how much he loves the freedom in how she acts and how much it reminds him of her when she was a child and at her happiest. And I think the movie does a fairly good job of showing that Lizzies life was in disarray before Fred came back into her life, she'd just lost her job, she was in a dead end marriage that she was desperate to save despite how obviously bad Charles was for her. And she just seemed generally sad and emotionless. It was when Fred showed back up and started taunting her mother that she started to show signs of life again. I think her first laugh in the movie is Fred's "Cobwebs" line. -

100% Team Fred. Blows my mind that Paul and Casey were defending the mother who was clearly awful, for all the reasons Jason, June listed. She constantly undermined her daughter, attacked her self confidence, blamed her for her marriage to an older philandering and emotionally abusive husband failing etc. But I think another aspect that I think they tried to make clear was that her mother decorated that house not to be lived in by a child. More importantly not her child. Her daughter has clearly always been a bit rambunctious and their house is still essentially a museum that they live in. Her mom has never been interested in learning about who her daughter actually is, or at all altering her life or perspective to connect with her daughter in any meaningful way. Dad is also clearly a jerk for walking out on his daughter, which I think they also used as a way to show why she was so desperate to make her marriage work despite how awful Tim Matheson was. Matheson also seemed like a clear and disturbing stand in for her father who walked out on her. If you're Team Sanity you have to understand you're on the side of a domineering mother, creepy Tim Matheson, Annabella, and a nurse who threatened her ward with physical violence. -
Can't believe that out of all the crazy shit Ray Liotta has been in, In the Name of the King is the only movie of his they've done. Between this, Heartbreakers, No Escape, and Turbulence I feel like they have alot of ground to cover in his illustrious career.

Another body switcheroo movie, with Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage. Worth it for the scene where instead of waking up as switched or having like glowing orbs float from each other into the other persons body. They just have Savage and Reinhold transform into each other like a couple of werewolves.
-
Goofy action movie that has Stephen Baldwin, Kyle Mclachlan, and Kim Coates all playing the same character at various points throughout the film.

Have to bump this legitimately fun but very stupid movie.

Youre not alone I saw this movie in theaters as a kid. I also waited for the next showing of a sold out Man of the House with Chevy Chase and Johnthan Taylor Thomas, so I think its pretty fair to say that children have terrible tastes in movies. -
As delightful as this is i'm going to have to insist that if they start doing terrible Richard Grieco movies they start with his knockoff Thor movie.

Its amazing how much of Sean William Scotts filmography is deserving of an episode.
