I'm sure this will only be interesting to a few of you so bare with me. Look we all like music, some of us more than others, and we all have genres of music we like. While I have a strong and healthy love of jazz, my biggest musical love will always be electronica. My favourite band is Daft Punk with probably Devo coming in second. This recent trend of ambient music and synthwave has delighted me greatly. All discussions for another time. Bruno is a up and coming electronic musician and sees technology as the future of music. So much so he gets into an argument with his teacher over it arguing that if Mozart was around he'd go electronic. I'm not sure if the writer of the film knew this or not but there was a Japanese man that had a similar thought as well. Tomita Isao better know as TOMITA was an early pioneer of electronic music and the album that really put him on the map was Snowflakes Are Dancing which was an electronic rearrangement of Debussy's music. Later he would make many more "science-fiction symphonies" by adding spacey elements into his rearrangements of other classic musicians most notably him doing a space up version of Holst's The Planets. While who's to say if Mozart was around these modern times if he would stick to classic full orchestras or do it all with technology, I think it is fun to listen to what could have been.

Yes! When Leroy asks about the teacher and they say she's at the hospital because her husband is very sick and he goes there you think "Oh, I know they've been butting heads these four years but maybe he does actually respect her." Nope, immediately into the exact same scene they've been having for the last four years! He didn't come to tell her that he actually like Othello or anything just a repeat of the same scene.

Predictions for who actually ends up successful? I think Montgomery becomes a success but not acting rather directing or something like that. Bruno eventually gets there but not for awhile. Once computers become more mainstream he starts music there. Again maybe producing more than anything. The real success story is that girl with the OJ Simpson impersonation.

So when the movie was done I was left with the question, "Did I enjoy that?" It's been a day and I'm still not sure I know the answer to it. I know it wasn't bad but I'm not sure if I enjoyed it or not. I think that's largely due to the movie jumping between all the characters. They wanted to show you all these different students and their stories and their lives but at a certain point this movie becomes the Ralph, Doris, and Montgomery story. Their story takes up most of the running time. The only problem with that is because you spend so much time with them we just kinda drop in on the other kids at their most dramatic. The other students don't really seem to have any clear end or middle or beginning to their stories. The closest to a full story outside of the main three is Doris. She shows up and states her intention to sleep with Leroy. she sleeps with him, she gets an abortion. Yet you have Bruno and Coco and their thing that goes nowhere, and it end of Coco being sexually assaulted. I get it because "these things" happen but next thing you know she's happy at graduation. It's just weird. Also there is electronic music at graduation so I guess Bruno won in his struggle with the teacher again this storyline just kinda left unresolved. Part of me wishes we saw more of everybody else or at least show us less and focus more on the core three. This sort of imbalance left me just a bit confused and frustrated.

So this is a minor thing but I think the Bo Derek costume was a bad idea. The opening scene reads "Palermo 1979" and you have Bo Derek dressed as her character in 10. Prior to 10 Bo Derek was in one movie, Orca, so she was a virtual unknown at the time. 10 did break her big into the public consciousness but 10 came out in October of 1979. Based on my research while I couldn't find an exact date for Italy most European countries didn't even get the movie 10 until February of the following year. Running around as Bo Derek from the movie would have been the same as running around as a generic beautiful blond. There is no way anybody in Italian would have know who she was or cared about Bo Derek from the movie 10 in 1979. The fact that Brent Spiner's character knows that it's Bo Derek means this movie either starts in November or December of 1979 or he was a big fan of the movie Orca and was looking forward to her next role.

Because they're both in on it! Oooo... I have a bunch of movies that if I'm in a bad mood I'll put on. Things like Big Trouble in Little China, Tremors, Black Dynamite, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc. just things that are undeniable fun and not trying to be anything more. Ghostbusters is the one movie I always go back to the most. It is the movie I have seen the most and probably the movie that really got me into movies when I was young so when I watch it often brings a lot of those feelings back.

This is a movie I always think I have seen and then realized I've just seen it referenced and parodied so much I just think I have seen it.

Hold on to your butts because here's my theory, this whole movie is a lie and it is all an elaborate ruse orchestrated by his family to trick him into an arranged marriage! Let's look at the facts. First, his grandfather shows up immediately after the parents go missing. How'd he know if he'd been out of contact with the family? Then he takes Pistachio under his tutelage and gives him the family book. Their family is an ancient Italian family and their guide book is written all in English. Now his family has some American ties true but at the time this book was supposedly written America wasn't a thing and they would have written it in Italian. Also the book is oddly specific to everything his grandfather said and exactly what's going on. You can say it's just a coincidence or everything is following a script concocted by his father and grandfather. Why was Jennifer hired as his assistant? They interviewed many more qualified people who literally not given a chance. Then she magically happens to show up that moment and gets the job despite not knowing anything about it. If though they both object to her they hire her. They even start laying the seeds in about not falling in love with a big old wink. Why would they do all this? Simple, they need an heir! Pistachio is the last in the long line of this great family and is clearly a little soft in the head. His parents are aware of this, and realize that this man child is never going to attract a stable girlfriend so the family line will die with him. James Brolin contacts his father and they work out this plan. They find a willing woman, Jennifer, and either manipulate her or pay her a large sum to marry their son. However, they realize that with his obsession with large posteriors he'd never willingly go after Jennifer. It's at this point they start working on a way to get him to fall for her. This is where letting him in on the family secret with the book that basically forces him to fall in love with her comes into play. Think about it. Why else was the mystery so simple to solve? They had it all worked out that even he could solve it and he couldn't even do that! She has to tell Pistachio what to do at all times. When all is done their son is a little bit more mature and now they can have a future heir. If that fails she already has a son to past done the Disguisy name down on to. Also why would a young boy befriend a man with a dog in a day and age in which stranger danger is taught all the time? He was in on it too. I bet he wasn't even that clumsy.

It's time for... How Did This Get Named? Frankly today's movie is not all that funny or interesting but different enough to still comment on. 変身パワーズ　(Henshin pawaazu) or Transformation Powers! What is interesting to note is that while at first I thought this title was self explanatory (he has powers that allow him to transform) upon reading some Amazon reviews there appears to be a slight double meaning which I don't know if it was intentional or not. A lot of reviews seemed to be this the title was a play on Austin Powers. Obviously there is a slight Mike Meyers connection to all this but I'm not sure if that is intentional or not. The poster has a colour scheme not unlike the first Austin Powers, so maybe. Anyway you'll be happy to know that this movie is rocking a two star rating on Amazon and nobody has given it more than three stars. Choice comments from the reviews are "These are American styled jokes and that must be be why I'm not laughing", "I think this is a kids movie", "The most interesting thing is the special feature on the Turtle Club" and my favourite "Another in the dark history of nice guy Adam Sandler's Happy Madison's attempts to give his loser friends their own movie."

I think the soundtrack was the aspect of this movie that offended me the most. So many great songs just ruined or used wrong. Seriously how bad do you have to fuck up for Conga not to make something better?

Before we get too negative with everything I just want to say what a great year this is for South Korean cinema. Not only was last year the 100th anniversary of South Korean cinema but Parasite is the first South Korean movie nominated for best international picture (formly best foreign language film). Not only that but it is also the 12th foreign film to get the best picture nod as well. In addition Bong Joon Ho is the first South Korean to be nominated for best director as well. This is all a big win for a great movie as well. Personally, I would have liked to see some acting nods for it as well but that production design nomination is a good call.

This! I love the visuals of the film but the Beatles themselves just mostly felt dull and I think it was because there was no real emotion or anything to their delivery. Then you have the real Beatles at the end and in that short clip bring so much life to it all I was like "Where was this earlier?"

Also, is it just me or is it odd Ford v Ferrari is best picture nominated? I haven't seen it yet (just opened here) but it has no directing, writing or acting nominations. Normally best picture nominees are represented in the main categories.

This is something you and Cameron can speak to more but it felt like four hits and four b-sides to me. Not that the ones I was unfamiliar with were bad but it seemed like a majority of them were like "Oh, curious never heard this one before" or "This sounds oddly familiar..."

I've yet to see Little Women but something tells me Greta Gerwig deserves to be there more than Todd Phillips.

I did find it very funny that Ringo at the start of the movie was bemoaning how nothing exciting or interesting happens to him and then he goes to his house. In the house he's driving a car, giant things going from room to room, King Kong, etc. No wonder the streets of Liverpool are boring and nothing seems to happen if that's your house.

As the Beatles guy why do you think that is? I mean he's not the most conventionally handsome of the bunch. My theory would be that he does seem to be the most outgoing of them all though.

I would have never guessed that of all the Beatles Ringo would have gotten the most screen time. Probably because he had the most puns.

There are lots of little things you can pick on in this film because it is clearly an amateur low budget production. Notably when he's in his hospital bed after being hit by the car there are lots of little things to point out. The fact it's clearly a spare bedroom (as Paul said hospitals don't have carpets), the fact none of the IV are hooked up or set up properly, the fact none of the equipment is on or why there are three oxygen tanks, or even why is there just a laptop in among all the medical equipment. These are all little things done with their limited space and budget to try and look hospital like. At least he was trying and put some thought into it. What I do take major issue with though is his face. So he's suffered major head trauma and they have made a special bandage for him which is literally just covering up half his face. Granted I'm not a doctor but I would think if you were to bandage the head you'd bandage it all and not make a special mask. Even if you were to make a mask I'm sure you'd make one that doesn't completely cover up both nostrils and the mouth. Surely if you did that you wouldn't then put a nasal oxygen tube on top of that bandage mask with no way to enter the nose thus rendering it useless. And in the far off chance that they do bandage the mouth and nose fully and place a nasal oxygen tube on top of it all, surely they wouldn't then put a full nose and mouth oxygen mask which covers no airways on top of all that that. Yet that's what he did. Those are the high level decisions that make Neil Breen perfect for HDTGM.

This is the best advice. This is an insane movie for sure but it is sloooooooooooooooooooow. It's not so bad if you are watching with a group and can all talk about what's going on. Maybe that was his intention. Make it so batshit confusing and then long silent scenes that add nothing so people can just talk and catch each other up. Watching this alone at regular speed is Herculean task.

I will say, music aside, the best bit of this movie is how it ended. That ultimately this isn't your typical story of coming from nothing and being successful. Rather this was about how being in this band and the music ultimately changed these people's lives for the better. Like Lips said it was never about being a success and getting lots of albums but giving them some hope at a bad time in their lives and period for their country. Some went on to be musicians with varying degrees of success, one became a successful doctor and the one that dropped out of the band is kinda back where he was. I thought that was a very nice and unexpected ending.

First of all I forgot Shaft came out this year and yes it was truly terrible. It was that weird thing of "Is it a joke that he's saying these things or are the things he's saying the joke?" Either case also the idea of "A real man acts this way" on top of the homophobia a misogynistic stuff makes it a hard pass. As far as Us goes...
