  1. To me the biggest problem with this movie was it wanted to be fun but it didn't feel fun. I relate this movie to those that try to parody a style, look, or fashion of a genre. They wanted to make fun of old serials I suppose but the film itself just picks and chooses what to do with that genre. Something like Flash Gordon that came out around the same time is something that took the campness of the serials and ran with it to make a film that embraced it, celebrated it while being fun and fully aware of what it was. Even Indian Jones which was a few years earlier was inspired by serials and runs with it better. This movie is a bit different in that it is trying to be a comedy and for the most part the comedy fell flat overall. That's probably due to an overabundance of ideas that they tried to cram into it.
  2. It's the time for the (not so) exciting return of... How Did This Get Named? The last few movies have all either not had a name change or a changed one that isn't interesting enough to be mentioned (Deadfall is The Professional). However this movie I guess made its choice whether to be Team Fred or Team Sanity when it came out. At one point there was debate among the two teams who the focus of the movie was. Was it a story about Phoebe Cates or was it about Fred. Well, in Japan the movies is called. フィービー・ケイツの 私の彼は問題児 or Fiibii Keitsu no Watashi no Kare wa Dodonpa or Phoebe Cates's "My Boyfriend is a Problem Child" Now this title there are a few things to unpack. One, her boyfriend/husband is cheating on her which is a problem but not a child. Also Fred is not her boyfriend nor is he a child. However he behaves like a child and made her a problem child so I guess that part kinda checks out. Second, Phoebe Cates's name is part of the title like it was a movie she made or something. Now this could be seen as a way of getting people in. Gremlins was big here so why not sell your movie using her name. However if think about it, this title puts Phoebe Cates's character front and center as the Team Fred people did talk about. So I guess Japan in Team Fred. I found this image and I remembered when they'd package DVDs like this. I thought it was kinda interesting. The bottom part was a separate paper that went in between the plastic shrink wrap and the DVD itself. It has the original poster, the name of the movie, the director and what they're known for and the cast and what they're known for. Then on the right is a little chart to tell you what kind of movie it is. So it's a five star scale and the categories they went with were "Fantasy", "Independence", "Misfortune", "Confession" and "Friendship." Fantasy, independence and friendship and get four our of five stars while misfortune and confession get three.

Downloaded the app but could not figure out how to "kast." I kept clicking on my screen which was Netflix but it wouldn't seemingly connect. If we're going to start adding friends on there I am Cambert.
  4. Was it just me or did Mickey Buntz look like a young Christoph Waltz?
  5. Sorry that I haven't responded yet. I was thinking pack about what I had to say about the movie and I couldn't remember much. It was fine while I watched it but otherwise the only thing I remember is how bald Joey Pants was. Also, how the ending was really bad. Like "Here's that sorta point of conflict and if you had just asked it would have all been okay."

Okay, here's the thing. I liked Bing, he has a certain amount of charm even though he was an awful man and he has some fun songs. Grace Kelly is beautiful and charming and wonderful. Frank Sinatra though... ugh. Like he brings the movie down so much for me. I wanted to like the story more but having seen The Philadelphia Story and I knew where it was going (for the most part) and watching Frank "act" for the first half of the movie was insufferable to me. The only person he seemed to have any patter or chemistry with was Bing and then the bad drunk acting... ugh. Overall, I want to like this movie more than I did but I think I'll just rewatch The Philadelphia Story again.

I went to watch this last night but accidentally rented the Japanese dub which was somehow the default. I didn't realize it at first because they don't dub over songs so I was a bit in before it clicked. I kept watching anyway and I watched about 30 minutes. I then realized I would have not much to add outside of "What was with Bing Crosby's super deep voice and Frank Sinatra sounding so young?" So going to watch it tonight.

I just noticed the time? That was only 90 minutes? Dear god, I thought it was over 2 hours for sure.
  11. The publisher of Spy magazine obviously.
  12. If this is The Philadelphia Story I'd have to assume Bing Crosby is the Jimmy Stewart right?

    Episode 217 - Jaws 3-D

This is what I found when I was trying to look up information on Harry Grant, a.k.a Shelby Overman: Flawed Soul. Apparently he wrote and directed a movie after Jaws 3 called Flex. Here's the plot summary: A bodybuilding film starring Harry Grant and Tom Platz. Grant was Mr. Los Angeles and Mr. Southern California, Platz was a Mr. Universe title-holder. Grant plays Vince, personal trainer at a gym in San Diego who wants to open his own gym. To get the money, Vince dates a rich heiress, but gets caught by his former fiancee. Vince's plans for a new gym take a downturn from there, being exposed by all related.

Sure he may not have been at the bar but that didn't stop all the people at the bar the next day assuming he was hungover and drunk. If everybody knew for a fact he was not at the bar all not why would their first reaction be "Oh he's drunk!" Easy, because he doesn't drink at the bar he drinks alone! You have cool boss Mike offering to get drinks for everybody in lieu of overtime, and yet where is Overman the man that wanted overtime the most? He's not getting drunk with his co-works he's doing secret work. Maybe he started the party early which lead to him rashly diving alone. No, I maintain that he's covering up his drinking habits. I mean you can smell booze on people, know when somebody is phoning in "sick" or working through a hang over. Mike has seen it all. Yet he keeps Overman on. If his work is good, what cause would he have. If he was at the bar drinking all the time then he's clearly a drunk and something has to be done. If he's drinking at home alone or on the beach, who knows what he's up. It's just hearsay. He's a closeted drinker. What else might he be in the closet about though? He seems like a Lothario waving at the skiing girls, hitting on female co-works, etc. but what if this is all a ruse? Is he trying to cover up more than just his drinking. What if Overman is struggling to accept who he is and his sexuality. It's the early 80s, it's Reagan's America. He's afraid to live his truth do to socials pressures and stigmas. He just wants to live a happy life as an out gay male. He hides this do to perceived social pressures. He over compensates for it by hitting on all women. Denying his true self and his true feelings drive him to drink. This leads to guilt and shame. Then the cycle repeats. He's a man who's being denied the chance to live his truth and before he can muster up the courage and conviction to do so he's cut down in his prime but a hastily made shark puppet. Wow. Overman: Tragic hero?

    Episode 217 - Jaws 3-D

First off, I think Mike walks that fine line between hard boss and cool boss. When the problem is first discovered, what is the diving crew's reaction? "Mike is going to be pissed." They are in fear off him because he can make their life hell and maybe he has already. He's been cool with the overtime in the past, but he's not such a cool guy boss that he's just going to jump when his employees say how high. I think he's a fair and even boss. He brings down the hammer when he needs to and rewards them when he can. If anything he's been a bit too helpful with Overman. Overman is good at his job. I'll give you that. I mean he does his work and does it well. How else to explain that physic with his 5 bottles of Jim Beam habit he has going on. In fact he's such a good worker that's why Mike has keep him on despite his dependency on alcohol. He knows he's a good worker, but he's also the kind of guy that's looking to get as much as he can for the bare minimum. Of course everybody is going to be happy to get overtime pay, and upset when they don't. However, how many times has Overman done this? He's trying to be the hero among the crew. "He guys, I'm fighting for us" yet it is purely a selfish move that just happens to effect the others. When it comes down to it we have to ask the question why was Overman killed. Here's what we know. He and his co-workers affixed the padlock on the gate and knocked off at a regular time. We know this because the gate was already padlocked when Overman went down at night. The rest of the team, and even Mike, are having laughs in the local bar. Where is Overman? Doing a lone dive at night. That's against rules and regulations and frankly just a bad idea. He's also doing it without company diving equipment, just his own snorkel. Why did he tell nobody about this? Why is he not using company equipment? Because he's trying to keep it a secret. What's the harm in telling his girlfriend or co-worker "I don't feel good about that lock, I'm going to have a second look." No, he told no one and broke the rules. This is either because he feared incompetence in his previous work and didn't want the blame or he's trying to sabotage work in order to force yet again more overtime work. His own selfish desires led to him sneaking off at night and ultimately becoming baby shark food. Overman: Selfish alcoholic!

"I'm just trying to read the logo" the classic excuse of the man caught staring. (Also, I'm very sorry. Mrs. H, your husband is a stand up guy and was trying to help a poor confused man. He only has eyes for you.... and Ryan Kwanten)

The fact that he's not willing to give it out willy nilly just further proves my case against Shelby. He wasn't denying his men overtime he was denying Shelby overtime. When asked if they can get it done Shelby's response was "for overtime maybe." Not "Yes, but we'll have to workovertime" or something compromising. Rather an ultimatum of overtime or nothing. To which Dennis Quaid responses "You've got enough overtime." I read this as he's a good boss who's been helping out his alcoholic employee by floating him overtime now and again. He can't afford to give him anymore overtime. Why does this diver maintenance crew have so much overtime to begin with? Because Mike Brody is a nice guy and been helping them out. Shelby has taken advantage of this and is now abusing it like he is abusing alcohol and Mike is trying his best to help. If he just keeps giving out overtime eventually Calvin will clamp down on it, and there will be no overtime for anyone!

Can I ask maybe a dumb question? What are all those barriers on the beach? Like the flag like divisors they have all over the beach that Lea Thompson plays sexy and and go seek with?

    Episode 217 - Jaws 3-D

Here's what I still don't get and I don't think I ever will, what's the deal with this park? So they have a man made lagoon. They say that a few times. So in this lagoon in the middle they have the underwater haunted house, Spanish Gallon, coral, etc. The idea is to observe the fish, so it's full of fish as well. First this is a wacky idea because with such a large lagoon how can you assure the fish are going to be visible, also with so many small fish and a very open and lose gating system what are the chances they escape out to sea? However, the weirdest thing to me is this place seems to have tons of beaches to swim at, bumper boats to ride, ski shows to watch, etc. but these are all in that man made lagoon as well. You pay to go into a park to a private beach at a man made lagoon where there are hundreds of fish swimming about? Is that the selling point? You *might* swim with dolphins provided it's their play time. If not why not just go to a regular beach that is free? What's the point?

OMG! My grade four teacher was obsessed with that book. We had to read it in class and we did so many Egyptian related crafts and projects. We even mummified a chicken at one point. Believe me when you start telling people "I mummified a chicken in grade four" you get a lot of people slowly backing away and judging.

True the physic doesn't speak to an alcoholic per say, but he does have a very physically demanding job. For all we know when he started working for Mike he was twice the size. His weird tattoo on his arm speaks even further to a drunken night. Also, he is hitting on the skiers, the girl in the souvenir stand all while having a girlfriend he does live with. Which... if he lives with her where would be waking up hangover? The fact none of them care about this or find it strange further points to a pattern of reckless behavior.

    Episode 217 - Jaws 3-D

There is a deep dark secret hidden in this movie, and that Shelby is an alcoholic. The evidence is staring us in the face. Fact! When he's missing in the morning his boss assumes he's hungover in bed. Fact! When Kay asks what's wrong Mike says he's AWOL again. He has a history of going missing. Fact! He's He's desperate for overtime pay. He's a man that needs money by why does he need money so bad. Fact! Among his personal effects given to Mike are a stack of pawn tickets. Why is he pawning so much stuff? Again his need for money. Why does he need money so bad? Because he's slowly drinking himself to death. Frequently hungover and missing, hard up on cash, this is all evidence to his drunken benders. Let's face the fact, why would Shelby go at night to look at the fence? He didn't clock in he was doing and wasn't doing it for overtime pay so why was he there? Because he's drunk on the job! He realized that he couldn't remember if he correctly fixed the problem or not so he went back to try to hide his possible botched drunk work. In classic horror fashion the drunk or druggie has to be killed. Poor, Shelby.
