Musical Mondays Week 107 Preview (Cam Bert's pick)
Cam Bert replied to Cinco DeNio's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Oh, I'll chime in with my two cents now that I'm late to the party. For my MM choices I would say it's kinda split between things that I have seen and things I have not yet seen. I at first thought that it should be things that mean something to me so I have stuff to talk about. That's why JCSS was my first pick because it is something that is very personal to me and my mother. However, I think the downside to picking something like that is you can't really view it objectively if it does mean a lot to you. After that I started picking things I hadn't seen unless in a pinch and then pick something I had. I think I'm more likely now to go with something new to me and everyone. Also, I'm in mostly agreement with everybody here about movies and lists and Unspooled. I think the thing that killed it for me we the Unspooled movies being a bit longer than most movies and them doing like four three hour movies in a row. I just didn't have the time, and then never made it up. It's a shame because there are still a few on the list I haven't seen still. When I heard the new premise of the sure I was unsure. I think another thing that killed the podcast for me was the fact that Paul and Amy for the most part were on the same page. However, doing something like "The AFI Top 100" you are bound to get a majority of good movies which just lends to this. The only difference is when it is something a person is insanely passionate about I could listen to that. Lists are good because it gives you structure and it gives you things you might disagree on, but maybe pick a list that could be more polarizing. The IMDB top 100? A whole lot wrong with how those are picked but might create more discussion as well. -

I hope she stayed there to raise them. But given how the rest of the ending went... she was drove out of the village again and the kids starved and Linda had the last laugh. Boy, most everybody in this movie is a terrible person... -

I agree with Cameron and I don't think so. I mean when he is trying to save the dancers he says something to the effect "They are my family the only people I've ever been close to." Which I found odd given his wife and that in Okinawa. I got the impression that maybe he did not really love her but was merely going back to marry her as it was the right thing to do. Given that Roberts probably immediately sent him to back stateside, and given everything that happened I figure he just kinda gave up on doing the right thing. -

How could I forget his catchphrase "By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, don't mess with this cornhusker!" -

Yes, Mr. Roberts. When he first started talking I thought he was British then he was somewhere between British and American. Haha Fair enough. Some people do it just fine, but others... why couldn't Doctor Strange be British? -

I'll have more thoughts later but again I seem to be in consensus that I found it bloated with lots of greatstuff and some okay-ish stuff. The one thing that got me was the whole subplot with his old friend arriving and then suddenly riling everybody up. There was some good stuff that came out of it but largely it seemed unnecessary. If the introduction of Sam Sik came sooner and in place of that or there were just more violent outbursts through out I think it would have tightened the movie and not created this weird pause in the dance and the story. The other thing that got to me, and I get this is a South Korean movie for South Koreans but couldn't they get an American to play the Captain? His accent was not so passible. I mean with the exception of Jackson lots of the accents were big. -
I don't mind it either but that's probably because we had to watch it in high school. I think that for sure helped me appreciate it as flawed as it is. At it's core I think it was a neat way to adapt it, but yes it's pretty bad. Still I would take it over a lot of the Romeo and Juliet knock offs.

As far as my memory of this movie goes it was far from the worse Shakespeare adaptation ever.

Skimbleshanks may be made up and have a false sense of authority, but let me tell you the amazing true story of Tama the cat that actually ran a railway. In the early 2000s the Wakayama Electric Railway Company was facing hard times. The Kishigawa line was dropping in passengers and the company was severally in the red. They tried to close the smaller less used stations but faced massive resistance. A compromise was made. Local business owners were named station mangers of these smaller stations and were in charge of opening them, maintaining them, dealing with passengers. etc. Koyama Yoshiko who ran a small shop near the Kishi station was picked to be its manager. Koyama had been looking after and feeding 4 stray cats that lived in the area. The newest addition to the family, Tama, took a liking to living and sleeping in the station. As a joke Koyama made a special collar and got a tiny hat for Tama and created a sign that had Tama introducing herself as the station manager and greeting the passengers. Soon word in the area got out about this cat station manager and people started traveling to Kishi station to see her. Word spread out further and further and soon people from across the area were all flocking to see the cat. Wakayama Electric Railway Company got wind of this and seeing the increase in business made Tama an official station manger with a special made hat, ceremony and everything. As word grew and spread across the country so did Tama's position. An old ticket booth was remolded into being a home for Tama. She climbed the ranks becoming a super station master then operating officer of the company and then managing executive officer. Photobooks of Tama were widely sold, she got a new uniform, goods of all kinds were made of her, and eventually the station got profitable enough that they remodeled the whole station into a cat themed station. The train line got into the black and made a special Tama themed train. The increase in tourism from Tama's popularity boosted the local economy so greatly Tama was knighted for her work. Eventually Tama was named honorary president of Wakayama Electric Railway Company for single handedly turning the entire company around. Sadly in 2015 Tama passed away at the ripe old age of 15. There was a massive funeral attended by the entire top brass of the Wakayama Electric Railway Company. There was a statue erected to her and she was finally given the title of "Eternal Station Master" of the Kishi station.

While I think Phantom of the Paradise is legit too good for the show, they would have a lot to talk about with it for sure. All great choices. Seeing the Rockula poster just makes me want to rewatch it.

At first I thought "The Dance Team That Nobody Saw Coming" was another film the director did and now I am disappointed that isn't a movie title. -
But math is nature's poetry... ... I'll kick my own ass.

Look I know the scale of the cats has been talked about to death but the main issue I had with scale were the cockroaches and mice. The average mouse's body is 95 to 120 mm in length and from the band scene we can see that they are roughly two matches tall. The average match is 40 mm so this checks out so far. Meanwhile the roaches are about the size of two strawberries. Strawberries come in a variety of sizes but I'd argue that an average store bought strawberry and a match stick are roughly the same size with a strawberry being a tad smaller. Which means that mice and roaches would be roughly of equal size. That means these cockroaches are also in the 95 to 120 range. The world's largest cockroach, the megaloblatta of central America, can grow up to 97 mm meaning these are indeed terrifyingly large cockroaches. However, if we want to take this a step further we can extrapolate some information as to the size of these cats. The cats interact with the mice and roaches and pick them up. When they are holding the roaches they are the about the length of the cat's fingers. Your middle finger is approximately the length of your palm, so the cat's hands are approximately double that of the mice and roaches, putting them in 190 mm to 240 mm range. Studies have shown that our body is made up of many ratios that tend to be consistent. One is that your height is about nine times that the size of your hand. So take those numbers and doing a little math show that these cats are 1.71 m 2.16m tall. Given that that roaches were slightly smaller than the mice let's focus on the lower end of the spectrum and say that these cats are 1,71 m tall which is the mean height for adult men globally. These are indeed human sized cats.

What's better than 2 Vanessa Hudgens? 3 Vancessa Hudgens!!! Am I right? -
I buy this. What struck me though is how just unhappy and unfulfilled he was by everything. Yet he constantly had the Leading Player in his ear telling him "Hey, you know what would satisfy you? Do this." He does everything he is told to do, and yet none of it brings him fulfillment. It's when he finally rejects the Leading Player's advice and is done with him that he is finally happy. Maybe I was inspired by the hippie-ish feel of a lot of this but I took this as a slight anti-consumerism kind of stance. You are constantly being told by people and media that this will make you happy and make you complete yet a lot of those things are surface level things that don't actually do any of that. It's only once you're true to yourself that you can find happiness even if that means not being or having the best.

I think I was underwhelmed as well but the movie did have a certain charm and when it was done I appreciate a lot of what they did do. I'm a sucker for movies about people making movies. There is something about that "let's put on a show" vibe that is just charming to me. This had some of that. The fact that two of the performances are labeled in the credits as "guest stars" rather than just the typical "and with" struck me as odd but then when Martha Raye came on as Berthe and was very hammy but in that "You know me, I'm just having fun" way I thought "Wow, she IS a special guest star." It's like in Oh Hello! when they'd interview different people each show I felt like they could have done that with her part and it would be like a special guest star. Also calling them a guest star seemed to fit with the feel and the humor. Speaking of the humor while inconsistent what was there worked for me. I find the meta stuff pretty funny and Charlemagne seems like a fun role. Overall I have no doubt this is something that is a lot more fun live, but I can see why this was a hit. Would I watch this again? Probably not, but would I watch a production of Pippin? Yes for sure.
