Hmm... what if the iPad was a bit of a mcguffin? Maybe their plan was the turn everything off at the remote site and then destroy the computers there so the only why to turn things off would be on the iPad which is useless without Rock's face thus insuring that the building would burn.

Okay maybe I'm reading too much into this but I'm pretty sure this was an elaborate revenge plot on the part of Pablo Schreiber. Somehow he gets a job as... wait was his job? Assistant? Building manager? Head of security? Whatever. He works for rich Hong Kong man and his new giant building. Somewhere along the way he was approached by the triads and the people that needed the data from Hong Kong business man. The plan centered around getting the iPad and having a random person take the fall for the building being on fire. That's when he thought about getting back at the Rock for leaving him scarred. Think about it, the moment the building went up Rock was immediately on the news as the bad guy who did it. He was being set up to take the fall from the start. Pablo Schreiber wanted Rock's life ruined but didn't want to hurt his family thus the night pandas. He used his position to guarantee Rock was the only person applying for the job and he told him what he'd need to do for the interview. He arranged for everything to be the way it was to get that tablet into Rock's hands so they could steal it and blame it all on him and ruin his life like the Rock ruined his.

Was there any doubt!

I don't want to know. I like the surprise. There are a lot of directors I love (Scorcese I like but not love) but I kinda like the idea of a director only being allowed one film on the list. At first I thought this was a bad idea because you have directors like Kubrick who change genres with each film. Then the more I thought on it even though there is a change in genre the style and their voice comes through. The Coen Brothers are other directors that go through different genres but their voice carries through. By limiting it to one film per director you are forcing them to think of a hundred different voices which would give rise to more varieties of genre and style of film. It would also force people to think about which films they are choosing too rather than falling back on a given "the one" like Swing Time. I mean the list might not be "the hundred greatest American movies" but there are those that will argue that regardless what movies make the list. So why not try to represent as many voices, views, styles, and genres as possible?

Now I'm dying to know!

Drat! I was trying to remember which ones you were not so thrilled with when you reviewed them.

I need to check the list to see if I can guess those. Okay my guess are Intolerance, Raging Bull and The Searchers.

I will quickly share this story because I believe I've talked about this in the HDTGM forums before and don't want to repeat myself. I have seen Ghostbuster way too many times, like uncountable number of times. I had it on VHS as a kid and would watch the movie all the time. Like any chance the TV was free I would put it in and watch it. If my parents wanted to go over to a friends house they'd bring the cassette and just plunk me down in a back room and I would watch it back to back until they wanted to go home. The first memories I have of going to a movie in the theaters was to see Ghostbusters 2 because I was so obsessed with the first. This is doubly odd because I would have been 6 which raises the question of how did the movie not freak me out at that age and why would my parents take a 6 year old to see Ghostbusters 2. Anyway, I watched the tape so much that I literally wore the tape out and my parents refused to replace it citing I had "seen it enough."

According to Letterboxd somebody hasn't seen Paddington. That's a charming AF movie about family.

It was great hearing some of these clips again. It's a true testament to the nature of this show that there can be so many great moments that I forget about some of the ones I loved the most. Here's to another 200 more great episodes!

I agree completely. Ranking things is subjective and humor is even more so. That's why I think there are so many more dramas on the list because those are universally got while if one style of comedy doesn't work for you a comedy movie can just fall flat. To me though that is even more reason for Mel Brooks or Airplane! to make the list. If you divorce personal opinions or number of laughs out of the equation and focus on the film making or writing aspects of it I think they stand out a bit more than Duck Soup. Again it is subjective, but I kinda feel like if we're putting Swing Time on to represent all Ginger and Fred films, can't we put one Marx Brother's movie in to represent Marx Brothers movies and replace the other spot with a Mel Brooks movie and have that stand in for all Mel Brooks movies?

Again I wasn't huge on Duck Soup either and you brought up the movie that should go on this list in my opinion over Duck Soup and that is Airplane!. To me these two movie share a lot in common. Both try to cram as many jokes in possible and both are just silly for the sake of being silly. There are scenes of physical comedy and there are scenes of quick replies and word play. However, where I think Airplane! works over Duck Soup is that it is working on many different levels. First off Airplane! hits pretty much every type of comedy. There is at least one joke somewhere in the movie that covers every major style and type of humor. All the actors are slightly different in style of acting. Julie Hagerty and Robert Hayes are heightened comedic performances, Leslie Nielsen and Peter Graves are deadpan and straight, Lloyd Bridges finding a balance in between those. The main difference is there is there is a story and even in the bits of story that would be boring they throw in visual jokes to keep you interested while not taking away from the story or comedy. At its core Airplane! like Duck Soup is just pure comedy and being silly but fills in those gaps where I think Duck Soup falls a bit short.

I know Paul and Amy mentioned how they thought that Chico was a better actor because he seemed to play off people more. However I wonder how much of this is in part due to the different style of comedy they are doing. They are both playing characters but with slight different styles. Groucho's shtick is to be the fast talker cracking instant witty replies. This results in scenes when it doesn't seem like he's interacting as much as he is simply reacting. However, Chico is playing a bit more broad character who because of his persona isn't a fast talker. He gets to have one lines and stretch jokes out. As a result he gets to act a bit more. He can take his time and gets to set a pace and timing to his jokes that Groucho doesn't. The way I saw it in this film the three brothers (sorry Zeppo) each has a distinct style of comedy. There is some slight overlap but each has their own style and type. Who's to say if the roles were switched if things wouldn't be different?

Quick aside, what comedies did our fathers show us when we were kids? I know my father made me watch Monty Python and their movies and George Carlin when I was far too young to fully get them.

Just started the episode but I must chime in, Kraken spiced rum is delicious and everybody should listen to Paul and try it.
