This is a tough question. Give me my trek into work to think it over.

This conversation all started because he's moved on to electric cigarettes. Vaping isn't really a thing here, yet anyway, but they have these "electric cigarettes" which you put a special cigarette in a pen thing and you can smoke it without the smoke. I argued that smoking in any form is just as bad which slightly hypocritical because I do enjoy a cigar every now and then. So if he wasn't married to Ginger, who was his first wife? Was she in the business as well?

I would love to chime in but I'm afraid I'm a terrible dancer, and not familiar enough with both their works to really compare and contrast the two from what little of what I've seen. I will note though I became fascinated in the video Cinco posted by just watching their arm movements. Essentially they are doing the same moves, steps for the majority of it but their choice of arm movements or what to do with your arms is very different. Read into that what you will.

Whelp, I'm delighted. I think Astaire as a tad more charm.

I just finished watching the movie (had trouble tracking down a copy) so I'm glad I didn't miss too much. Haven't even logged it on letterboxd yet. I will echo what was first said. This movie is charming. That's the perfect word for it. I wasn't terribly familiar with Fred Astaire, but he is incredibly charming. I would have liked to have seen him Gene Kelly is a charm and dance off. One of the other things that got me right away is there is some what I can only imagine some risque jokes at the time. I mean it's basically a French farce heavy on the word play, but all the stuff with him and Hardwick and tricking him into answering things and that. After his wife hits him, he jokes but he likes that kind of thing and Hardwick agrees and then is like "no, not that." Maybe I'm just reading too much into it. I was having a similar conversation last week with a friend. Talking about how everybody use to smoke it seems back in the day even dancers and hard laborers. His theory was that cigarettes were more pure and therefore easier on the lungs. He also believe this is why so many Asians smoke and don't get as much cancer. He's Japanese and smokes so who am I to argue.

That reminds me I think it was in the Colbert interview but Maurice Sendak hated being refereed to as a "children's" author for similar reasons.
-
Question for those of you with kids: Has there ever been some sort of children's entertainment (movie, music, book, etc.) that you ended up enjoying much more than your kids?
-
It could have been worse. They could have bricked him all the way in.

I always thought another dark thing about it is that in the original British version Sir Topham Hat is called The Fat Controller. Despite having a name and everything they decided "naw, let's just keep calling him the fat guy" then his sons take over and get called fat too. That's just mean.

The best thing my father did for me in developing tastes of likes was forcing me to watch George Carlin and Monty Python from way too young of an age. Both are things that got funnier as I got older and understood them on different levels. That can not be said for his forcing of me to watch Black Sheep Squadron, M*A*S*H, and Taxi. Then are are things I liked that my parents loved that they never forced on me but it just happened like Star Wars and Columbo. Now I work with children and try to get them into things and I'm always surprised what takes and what doesn't. Also I see what favourite things their parents are forcing on them.

Glad to hear that you and yours are well.

So replaced the French and Japanese with Russian and Chinese. The times, they are a changing.

Musical Mondays Off-Week 22 (Quasar Sniffer’s 2nd Pick)

Much like you I have never seen any Fred and Ginger either so I look forward to being exposed to this! -
Here's something interesting I noticed in the film but it's very subtle. When we see Denzel going back into prison the door has "Stand clear of door" written on it and then below it it has the same thing written in Spanish, French, Japanese and Korean. I found it odd that there are all those languages on the door. I mean I could see the Spanish or French maybe but the Korean and Japanese seemed odd. Later on in the movie when we see Dr. Lindenmeyer watching the news a few times in his hotel room and each time there are three boxes on the side with different talking heads. The top head seems to be telling the news in English, the middle one is an Asian person, and there is one more on the bottom also speaking out of sync. So not only are the prisons multilingual but the news is too. This leads me to wonder is everything in future L.A. multilingual? Is it just L.A. or all of America? Why these languages? Why even include this at all? It's interesting world building I suppose but so subtle, did it even accomplish its goal?

Not to mention that the captain of the police, the only person on Denzel's side was murder at the VR place. Who ordered those cops? There is no way they'd listen to a former cop turned criminal.

I never saw Deck the Halls so if its available I suggest we do that as the Christmas pick. Also, I agree with you about Warwick Davis. He did get that Ricky Gervais bump for awhile with his own show and travel show with Karl Pilkington. -

A phrase never utter before in human history. Maybe it's too early to talk about December but what Christmas movies have been done? -

When I was back home this summer I had some craft ciders. They were really nice. I also really like Angry Orchard. -
There is one throw away line in this movie which I thought was the stupidest thing ever. After SID 6.7 murders the guy at the electronics shop he starts to watch the Ultimate Fighting Championship on the TV. The announcer says "there are still a few seats left here at the Olympic auditorium for those of you that want to see the Ultimate Fighting Championship in person." A live sporting event is telling the fans to stop watching it, drive down while missing a large portion of the event, and watch the end live because they have open seats. Unless you are literally 5 minutes away, how is this a good idea for anybody? Do they offer discount prices for coming to see the last half live? One would argue you are watching it on TV because you already couldn't afford to see it live, live to far away to go see it live, or don't care that much about it to go see it live. Who are they trying to target? Now I hear your argument "that line is only in there so SID 6.7 knows where to go." I agree but couldn't they have also said "the crowd at the Olympic auditorium are on their feet" or something similar which is a common colour commentary thing to say and not asking people to come on down and join halfway through?

Which did you decide? I just rewatched Virtuosity and kinda wish I had rewatched Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
