Musical Mondays Week 22 Bugsy Malone
Cam Bert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I want to see Saving Private Ryan done in a Bugsy Malone style if only to see in the opening scene with a kid walking around covered in cream picking up pie pans as pies and custard are flying around him. -

I find it odd that they went with Dapper Dan rather than Fat Sam. In case anyone cares (I assume Cinco might as he posted it) in Japanese the movie is called Dauntaun Monogatari or Downtown Story. Side note the infamous NES game River City Ransom in Japan goes by nearly the same name (they throw in extra word to tie it to the main series of games.) As far as the Monkees go, I'm not overly familiar with them so no deep cuts but I do really enjoy "Last Train to Clarksville" -

I like to think it's a Logan's Run type world except it's 20 and not 30. -

Okay, if we go by the scene where Fat Sam throws the pie at his one crony in his office, up to that point people were just throwing pies at each other. The gun that Dapper Dan's crew was using was new. Fat Sam didn't have access to it, was confused and confounded by it. So This leads to one of two scenarios. one in the alternate world of Bugsy Malone guns weren't invented until the 1920s. The standard pie being the equivalent of bow and arrow or sword. This means no first world war, no civil war, the whole history is different! The other possibility is that pies weren't invented until until the 13th century and rather serve as a food it was a weapon. But whipped cream didn't come about until the 16th century. So again alternate histories. -

I only have a little regret. To me the most disappointing this about the movie is there is so much good in it that if the story had another pass or two and maybe one more music number it would have been much better. -

There is a five part documentary that you can find on YouTube about catching up with the stars 30 years later. One of the interesting things mentioned was that Paul Williams wrote the music for adults because it would capture the emotions better than children singing and they would get the songs very late. Also the songs were written with no consideration of who was playing the parts and that's why the voices would often not match the child at all. -

That out of the way, I wanted to like this movie so much but nothing ever seems to come together. Like the ending has also briefly been discussed but I want to talk briefly about Bugsy Malone. So the titular character is suppose to be this streetwise charmer yet he can't get a job, dines and dashes, and other petty little things. He meets a girl and seemingly falls for her, gets hired as a driver, and then to steal guns, and then runs away at the end with the girl. That's it? Those are all things that could have been removed from the story and it still would have proceeded as normal. I half wanted it to be that he was a free agent that both sides were using and it was through his actions they worked things out. Yet the titular character seemingly makes up less than a third of the story and adds nothing to it. Fat Sam and his story way more interesting to boot. -

First off I'll explain my reason for picking this. Many years ago I was working with a British fellow. Something came up about doing stage work and I said I was telling him about things I had done. I said I was in Guys and Dolls twice and he said he was in a production of Bugsy Malone which was the British Guys and Dolls. I'd never heard of it at that point. Sure enough every British person I'd meet over the next few years loved, was in or wanted to be in Bugsy Malone while nobody outside the UK seemed to have any idea what it was. I went on to hear the soundtrack and liked a great deal of the songs. There is something charming about the "Bad Guys" song and then the twist on it to become "We Could Have Been Anything We Wanted to Be" at the end. I also like the little things like in the "So You Wanna Be a Boxer" song with the super deep "Let me have him Joe" However I never saw the movie. Then Musical Mondays started and I thought this would be great chance to finally see this movie and for something with catchy songs that nobody had seen outside maybe the one or two Irish and UK people here. -

Sorry if my post put undo pressure on you to get this going. I was just scrolling through Netflix and saw Airbender and it hit me. I hope you are on the mend. I'm sure the hot cocoa with the movie will make you feel much better. Also whatever movie is fine as long as it is with you guys. -

So it just hit me that we planned on doing this the second Friday every month and that's coming up at the end of this week. Is that good for everybody? What will we watch next? Avatar the Last Airbender is the next chronologically. Are people still interested in doing this? -

Outside of high school productions, I think this is the only one. It's like "The Terror of Tiny Town" only not as offensive. -
Just when you think you couldn't love a man anymore.

I think there is a scene when they eat beans or a stew... wait... The sloppy mess of Tommy! In Bugsy Malone they don't shoot each other they whip cream pie each other. Slightly easier to handle than that gif that shall not be posted. -

Ha! I did think about that being a problem. I totally get that but this is a younger and more innocent time (i.e. yes, free version on YouTube) -

I looked at some sight and it said it was available on iTunes, but I guess you can't believe everything you read online. I hope the YouTube version is good enough for all. -

So I thought of a few options. I wanted to pick something that maybe a lot of people are unfamiliar with. From there I decided to pick a movie musical that sort of embraces all aspects of Musical Mondays. It's a hodgepodge of all the things we've done. The 1920s of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the gangsters of Guys and Dolls, the youth of High School Musical, the family friendliness of Pete's Dragon and An American Tail, the lounge act of The Lure and the Paul Williams of the Phantom of the Paradise. I present to you, Now, based on what I could find this movie isn't currently streaming in America anywhere. I could be wrong though. It is available for rent or to buy on iTunes. If times are tough and you can't afford the rental there is a full version on YouTube but the quality is not too great.- 30 replies

Oddly enough there is between China, Japan and Korea. Chinese chopsticks are longer and have rounded ends. Japanese chopsticks taper to a point at the ends. Korean chop sticks are made of metal.

Am I the only one curious as to who won the contest? Leeroy got a date with Vanity but that was clearly unrelated to the dance contest being held.

Note sitting next to Nathan Lane in the grey suit is Ernie Sabella as Harry the Horse who was Pumba to Nathan Lane's Timon. -
There is some validity to Paul's argument over Leroy being a ninja. This movie is basically a hodgepodge of mixing Japanese and Chinese things together that are not related in any way shape or form. Leroy spends most of the movie walking around in a conical hat and tang suit, which are Chinese, but when he goes on his mission to save Vanity from Arcadia he dons ninja attire which is Japanese. It doesn't stop there. Bruce Lee started his own form of kung fu. Jeet Kune Do, which Leeroy seemingly practices and wants to emulate. However at his class he's teaching Chinese Goju which despite its name is from Okinawa and a form karate which is Japanese. But wait their is still more! When he comes into the apartment in the morning he refers to his parents as "-san" which is Japanese and his younger sister as "lotus blossom" which is more Chinese. The only one seeming consistency seems to be whenever we see chopsticks they are of the Japanese variety.

Just watched the one Cinco posted and it is much better. Still no Rural Juror though. Well for you that haven't seen the stage production there is a song that takes place between Adelaide and Sarah right after the mission scene and you actually hear their opinion on the matter:
