Episode 169 - The Garbage Pail Kids Movie: LIVE!
Cam Bert replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Ryan North's Squirrel Girl would be excellent. I think the problem is that we're so bogged down with people who get powers and then don't want to use them or ashamed of them. We don't really have that character that's like "I want to be a super hero. I enjoy having powers." -

Regarding Taskmaster the problem is Marvel has a bad problem of not many writers taking a villains history into account when using them and turning them into generic punching bags for certain heroes. Shocker is a prime example. He was a crook who just wanted money. He wasn't dumb, and never wanted to fight Spidey. In fact up until the 90s he was 50-50 with getting away from Spidey and being caught. Then it became fun to make fun of his look and his name, and now he's just the villain that gets trotted out for a laugh or when you want Spidey to punch someone. Taskmaster kinda falls under this too. In his first appearances he takes on the entire Avengers! In fact there is a line about him being able to beat them, but again he's not a character that wants to rule the world or anything like that. His origins are of a business man. He trains goons and henchmen for people, and just collects the money. He's a mercenary that will work with anybody as long as the paycheck is there. Some writers try to make more of a character of him like in Unthinkable or an incredible single issue in Avengers Academy, but at the end of the day a lot of writers just see skull mask and cape and choose to make him a regular lackey. That said he would make a good character in the TV universe but maybe not a solo series. -

I'm also on team Moon Knight especially if they go with the Warren Ellis Mr. Knight look which works with the overall look and feel of the TV universe anyway. It's a tricky character to handle and get the right feel for and as much as I love James Gunn and I know he can get dark but I think a lot of sensibilities will shine through and just don't jive well. I think they need a guy who gets the TV format, has a great eye, and can do heady mind twisty stories so I say get Bryan Fuller. -

Before this gets too Defenders heavy I have one correction and omission that I noticed. After the Garbage Pail Kids are released from their garbage can Ali Gator pulls out a lunch box filled with human eyes, ears, and toes. I really want to know where did these people parts come from? Did their can crash on Earth and then he proceeded to go about murdering and collecting them from people? He built up a collection and was then trapped back in the can by Captain Manzini where somehow those parts stayed fresh and preserved. Notice it's also chock-full of parts like it hasn't been touched. This leads me to believe that the Captain is aware of Ali's particular dining habits and has been murdering people and collecting parts for his little friend. This makes more sense then an alien who looks like a human alligator coming to Earth and deciding that they are going to eat the people of that planet who happen to look like large versions of his friends whom he has no interest in eating. Rather it is more logical to believe that Captain Manzini assuming he was a flesh eating gator of some sort started feeding him human flesh and Ali then developed a taste for it. Also I get him liking toes and ears as they are external and easily bite off-able parts, but where did his taste for eyes come in? That's a little harder to "accidentally" or stealthily bite off. -
Sorry I got busy watching all of The Defenders today. Still one more to go but need a bit of a breather. My Mom's favourite movie will vary but you will always get one of two answers. It's going to be Pollyanna or Shenandoah. I've seen Pollyanna a few times as a kid and I want to say I liked it however it always got mixed up with Ann of Green Gables in my mind. Never seen Shenandoah all I know about it is that it's a Jimmy Stewart western. It's also hard to find. My father I can't ask anymore and much like Cameron's father when I did I never got a straight answer. I know he had mentioned he'd seen Jeremiah Johnson more than any other movie. However, I know that if ever a Monty Python movie was on he'd seek it out and stop on it. He made me watch Holy Grail and Life of Brian when I was way too young to appreciate them. He also made me watch George Carlin specials way too young as well. My sister's favourite movie is Dirty Dancing and I have seen it and as much as I'd like to crap on it and its weird love story I kinda liked it as a kid.

That's true. I mean they want this to be the Netflix Avengers so they need that one word title. Although, this does make me think Hellcat was a Defender for a long time and she's technically on the show. Here are my comic nerd question about the show, I'll take my answers in a spoiler tag. -Do we get Daughters of the Dragon? -Do Danny and Misty start dating? -Does Trish ever become Hellcat? -

Thank you. Seeing as you have to use them at work and not as much socially the best advice I can give is don't always copy what people say. Japan has a lot of up down hierarchy type relationships and while it maybe okay for one co-worker to call another co-worker -kun or something similar, depending on where you fall it might not be acceptable to do the same. I now believe that's the second time I've seen that and still as confused. I've been conflicted over watching the Defenders mostly because I didn't watch Iron Fist because of obvious reasons and I read that he's very critical to the story. I've come around to realizing I don't need to watch Iron Fist first, but still a little weary. I'll get there though. Also as a comic nerd with no Hulk, Doctor Strange, Namor and Silver Surfer these aren't the Defenders I want and think they should have just called it Heroes for Hire. -

Slight minor correction not of Paul but for his Wikipedia based information. In Japan the cards were called γΆγγΏγγ Bukimi-kun which somebody translated as Mr. Creepy. In my opinion it's not really a good translation. Bukimi could translate as creepy or eerie, but it's the mister part that's really kind of inaccurate. In Japanese the suffix of -san after the name can be used for men and women regardless of age and is a pretty much one point translation to mister or miss. However, there are other post name suffixs that carry a more nuanced meaning that often doesn't translate in English. Kun is one of them. It's a term of affection or familiarity used mostly with young boys. We don't really do this in English. It would kinda be like calling a boy "Davie" instead of "David". Not really the same but close as we can get. The point is by calling them -kun you are denoting that they are children and not really applying the title or mister to them. Also important to note in Japanese there is no singular or plural, so the name refers to all of them not just one. Therefore in my opinion a better named would be "The Creepies" and not "Mr. Creepy." Or... we go by the full title of the movie in Japan. γγΌγγ£γ»γγγΊγγΆγγΏγγγDaati Kizzu Bukimi-Kun or Dirty Kids, The Creepies.- 183 replies

Or additionally you leave it on and when asked about it claim you were given $100 to make them all and look how much you did with so little! ... No, you're right. Alan Smithee all the way. -
This is a little off topic but in honor of Cameron's guga, does anybody her know what any of their relatives favourite movies are? Addition, if so have you seen it and what did you think of it?

Fun fact: That picture is actually of the notorious special effects and creature designer John Carl Buechler. He ran Roger Corman's effects shop in the 80s and 90s and directed Friday the 13th VII and the original Troll, but he's probably best known for creating the Ghoulies from the Ghoulies series of movies. In fact the over his shoulder in the picture is the main Ghoulie. He worked on this film in designing the make up for the Garbagepail Kids. -
I know this was briefly brought up before by I found Gaston's first girlfriend's cheating on him to be handled very oddly. So he's on to the fact that the skating instructor and her are very close. She overplays her hand a little by making him tip the skater and going off about how awful he is. In reality, she knows she's got no real future with Gaston right? If she was trying to marry him for the money you think she'd wait until after the marriage to start seeing people behind his back. She's actually just playing the same game he is, yet she's seen as the villain. Gaston dumping her and her loving being payed off to runaway result her being suicidal and everybody is happy about it? It's just so crazy.

Out of curiosity did anyone like the character of Gigi? Like she's not loathsome like the male characters for sure, and I didn't hate her at all. She that I found her kinda bland and we didn't really spend that much time with her to really like her beyond a "oh, no don't go with that guy. This is wrong" kind of attachment.
-
Continuing with it's outdated social values, men will not marry women because they'd rather live the swinging bachelor life sleeping with hot young Gigi's whenever it pleases them, and as a result women do not marry because the men are busy playing around to want to settle down with them.
-
Seeing as their is no father character, and given Hermione Gingold's previous relation with Maurice Chevalier are we suppose to believe that this is a family of spinsters or something? That's why it's more shocking or moving when Gigi does marry?
-
To chime a bit more in about the Oscars here are two movies released the same year as Gigi that weren't nominated for best picture, Touch of Evil and Vertigo. Yes I agree that it deserves the costuming and things like that but it literally looks like they had access to one bit of a park in France where they shot from every angle imaginable then did the rest on sets. Gigi isn't even the best song in Gigi and that was the one that won. It's crazy. I would like to assume that people at the time were so obsessives with France and the beauty and awe of Parisian culture that they were duped into voting for it. It's competition for picture that year was The Defiant Ones, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Aunt Mame and Separate Tables. However, I feel like I should say something positive about this movie. It did do something that I really like in musicals and that's the conversational duet. I actually really liked the song between Maurice Chevalier and Hermione Gingold. Like Cameron said earlier I kinda wish they went a bit more into their story. It seems like they were a good couple once, why else would Gaston years later still go see Hermione Gingold for social visits?

I have watched some truly bad and poorly made movies in my time, but I pride myself on being able most of the time to follow the plot. Despite their flawed attempts to tell I story I see what they were going for. That said this movie is not poorly made but I just could not follow the ending at all. Maybe it was self delusion on my part that he didn't just like Gigi because she was young and youthful I thought it was hoping it was because she wasn't cultured and refined. She wasn't "a bore" like everyone else playing the social game. Being with her was fun and exciting because she didn't follow the rules and say the right things so it was always interesting. Yet at the end when they go out to the club she's doing all the right things. She's doing what's been taught of her and Gaston is getting irritated. Again foolish me I was hoping it was because he loved her for who she was and not this fake version of herself. I felt nothing at all for him leaving her and then turning around and coming back. I guess it was suppose to be a triumphant return or something a la Gone With the Wind or something but it all just kinda fell so flat.

I would be interested but like you said my unfortunate location would make it difficult. I assume we want to watch before the movie drops, which makes it a bit hard. The options would be I wake up extra hour or so earlier once a week and we do it around 5pm EST which is probably not good for anybody. Alternately I'm home from work around your 7am EST, so if there is a time in the morning when everyone is free. -

I know this was brought up in the chat but you have two paladins, a priest, a thief, a farmer and a duel class fighter priest. Such party imbalance. -

My biggest question is why did Ron Perlman quit and leave with Nic Cage? I get that they were like best friends, but was that it? He followed him because of friendship? He seemed fine with the killing and everything. -

Because the witch went in the river at the start and made all the drinking water plague ridden? That's the best I got.
