    Episode 165.5 - Minisode 165.5

It's always nice to know that listener's concerns are being listened to and thought about. Thanks Paul. I kinda feel obligated to call in now. Phoning from Japan can't be that much or that difficult right? Now the pressure is on to think of something to say. At least I have a week or so to think about it. Nope still too much pressure.
  2. I wonder if I can find this in Japanese now... I thought to remark on this early when Cameron brought up the necklace being her virginity. Was it just me or was their a lot of double entendre or slight jokes about sex? I know the necklace is not a joke but it got me thinking about the line about her climax, El Gallo asking about what they're willing to do on stage, and a few others.
  3. It's a bit hard for me to explain but what kinda drew me in at the start was the sort of charm and pureness of this story. These two widowers why fake a feud to drive their kids together because they want them to find love and be happy to me was very charming and sweet. Then when you meet El Gallo he is a bit of a huckster and rogue with the cold reading, upselling and everything. However, his commitment to actually helping them made me see him as a charming rogue. A Han Solo type if you will. Sure he does some cheap tricks and is looking out for himself but he's not a bad guy. He was the defacto antagonist, but no means a "bad guy." That's why his sort of villainous turn I think negated the charm, if you will, I felt up to that point. He went from being a lovable rogue to a kinda creep. Despite him having the best of intentions at the end, it just kinda left me on a sour note. You could also argue that that was the intended reaction to have. For me to be a surrogate for Lucia and be charmed and duped by him only to learn the lesson she learned. Except when it was all said and done I didn't have a New Kid on the Block to fall in love with, just an empty apartment.
  4. I agree with that but I think the problem I'm having is the lack of trust we the audience or maybe just me had in El Gallo. From what I learned from CakeBug over on Letterboxd is that the character of El Gallo is the narrator of the play. Having not seen the play but seeing similar-ish ones I'd assume this role of narrator helps build a bond and repartee with the audience. Thus by the time he's doing these things we are aware of his intentions and reasons. While talking about El Gallo when I was looking up about this play earlier I found out that El Gallo was originally played by everyone's favourite Law & Order cop and singing candle Jerry Orbach. If you've only ever heard him sing in Beauty and the Beast you are missing out. Here's him singing Try to Remember: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEW1F9kZ-UE
  5. I was charmed with the movie until the second act. I'll let CakeBug or EvRobert or someone else familiar with the show to point out how the stage show does it better, but I just found it to be a bit cruel and creepy. Basically, the moment Matt is lured away by the freaks with their spinning spirals I knew "Ah, this is were the real bringing them together begins." I knew that El Gallo was trying to help and ultimately not trying to hurt them but the seduction of Luisa was a bit... much for my liking. It's I think a combination of his actions and her responses to them. Like him unbuttoning her blouse and having her laugh at the actual beating and robbing of the boy she loved. Then at the end he's doing his best to let her know how men like him will use her and can be cruel and she just kinda smiles and seems still charmed with him. He quotes the kissing book to her and she's just like "Lucky me." Then he basically straight up tells her that he will rob her, sleep with her and leave her and she's like "Well I guess that sounds fine I better pack." Maybe if there was more doubt when she had to hand over the necklace. The movie just kinda lost me at that point. Also Joel Grey and Brad Sullivan were great and I think had more chemistry than Matt and Luisa.

    Episode 165.5 - Minisode 165.5

I think he's aware of how off putting it could be because he does say he'd put the segment at the very end of the minisode so I assume people can just turn off at that point. However what about people who are working out, on bikes or listening to it on speakers as they work or clean up? You might not be able to stop it in time. There's a also a big difference between "my first crush was on X" and "the first time I ever jacked it was to X." Now if we want to have a corner about us talking about our first celebrity crushes that's perfectly fine as long as it remains PG. I still think that doesn't really need to be a corner but it's a whole lot better than the R rated alternative.
  7. I just saw this in the kindle store. It's clearly a Pink Floyd biography right?
  8. Guys! There is this film that was ripping off Pink Floyd's Echoes even before Godfrey Ho! I believe it's called Live at Pompeii and these guys not only do it once but twice!
  9. My favourite James Bond henchmen is Tee Hee.
  10. Out of curiosity does anybody recall Paul, June or Jason every saying what house they were in?
  11. I was about 10 when Power Rangers started and I really enjoyed it but at school that was a show for younger kids and I wasn't suppose to like it. I would still watch it on Saturday mornings and pretend that I hated the show or didn't know anything about it to seem cool. I was determined to just like what I liked in private. However when I did turn into a teenager pokemon started and I did listen to everyone at the time and refused to play it or watch it because it was for kids even though it seemed to be something I'd like. It wouldn't be until years later that I actually tried the game and enjoyed it, but now I feel left out when people around my age talk about loving it as a kid. Harry Potter is another one at first I dragged my feet on but came around in a big way on. Ravenclaw represent! Oddly I missed out on a lot of music culture not because I hated it but because my parents did. They weren't really into music in the 80s so they only listened to classic rock and things like that, and as a result that's all I listened to. So certain songs that I would have been alive for their heyday they were just lost to me and had to be discovered later in life. Most of my 80s/early 90s music comes from my older sister who unlike me couldn't stand my parents taste in music.
  12. I do remember that one! It didn't even click in my mind that would have been you. I think you have to give Dan Van Kirk a lot of credit. He's never breaks character and still rocks the games. It must be hard to do both so well.
  13. Love Gorillaz! That's good to hear. Was he himself or still in Mark mode? Did you make a sign if so what was it? Who was your shithead?
  14. I feel like I should answer my question. When it comes to Blur vs Oasis I pick.... Pulp!
  15. Okay, for the next battle let's see where you stand on 90s Brit Pop
  16. Well we know it can't be EvRobert or CakeBug seeing as they see to be in tandem.
  17. Oh man I'm sad I missed out on all this great music debate. If you'll indulge me here are my late answers. NKOTB - I have an older sister so I had to hear them non-stop growing up. Favourite member was Joey. I guess because he was my sisters favourite he was mine too. NSYNC vs BSB - This in junior high for me all over again. A girl I had a crush on was obsessed with BSB and when I asked her out said she was saving herself for Nick Carter so F them and their music. NSYNC all the way. I would also go with Lance, although in the years after I've come to like Joey just because he seems like a nice guy. Britney vs Xtina - Neither of them do anything for me. I can think of two Xtina songs and a dozen Britney ones so I guess Britney, Spice Girls - Ginger. If I had to rank them... Ginger, Sporty, Baby, Posh, Scary.
  18. I have never heard of this musical or this movie. I honestly have no idea what to expect.

Episode 165 - Ninja Terminator: LIVE!

Looking for logic in this movie is like looking dry patch at the bottom of the ocean but two things about the tape of Michiko being tortured Harry receives. First, the tape is delivered by a little robot. Where have we see little robots before? When he was being warned by the Ninja Empire to return the golden idol. So later when he sees a similar little robot coming into his house with a video tape his first reaction is not "Another warning from the Ninja Empire!" but rather "Hmm, wonder what's on this and who could it be from." Also in a prior scene we see him lie to his wife about the warning yet he's okay with her sitting down and watching this tape with him? Second, the tape continues many edits and close ups. Now the reason behind this is because just the footage from the Korean movie that this borrowed footage from. However, I like to believe that Tiger was really into cinema and movie making. During Michiko's beating and torture he would stop his hired goons to reset the camera and get close ups and multiple angles. Then when he felt the blows were looking weak and not scary enough he went back for some pick ups of just the goons striking something to really sell the beating. Also pro tip, when sending a threatening video tape of you committing a crime maybe think twice about close ups of the people involved.
  20. Haha I hadn't thought about that. Clearly he thought he would respect his cunning ruse. No, if Winslow was smart he would have waited for the post coitus cuddling to drop the "Mr. Swan it's me Winslow Leech." I guess it is true, he's bad in bed.
  21. Here's one thing I don't get, why does Phoenix even show up to the second audition? She went to the first audition and heard about what goes on and is nearly raped by Regis Philbin. So she knows that's what is the ultimate fate of those that work for or want to work for Swan. She seems very unhappy about it at the time, but yet she goes back to the theater to audition for him again? Is she so desperate that she is willing to be raped later on? Maybe she thinks because it's at the Paradise that nothing nefarious can occur, but what about the call back? What if he wants to see how much she really wants it? Doesn't she think about this? It's not like she doesn't know this is Swan's club because that's all people are talking about.
  22. And his overly affected gay voice, yes! Which I guess will go to answer tom's question a bit. I get that he's suppose to be the glam questionable sexuality type rocker of that era. Like a David Bowie type. Except Brain De Palma or the actor decided to play him very gay stereotype. In my mind the actor is doing his best to try to adopt the gay lisp, but instead comes off as a more over the top Buddy Cole.
