Musical Mondays Off-Week 8 (Kateacola's Pick)
Cam Bert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Yea you're a 100% right. Which is a shame. I mean take something like Return to Oz. The puppetry in that movie is next level, and while things may move more or smoother with CGI it doesn't have the same wow factor.- 156 replies

We also love Falkor because he's a flying cringer Edit: Because probably most of you didn't grow up on He-Man the man that voices half of all He-Man characters also voiced half the creatures in Never Ending Story- 156 replies

This is a movie I had on VHS as a kid. Watched it a lot, but honestly have no memories of it beyond it being kinda scary to 5 year old me.- 156 replies

Thank you. I hope she is too and so does she because she wants to spend more time with my sister's new baby.

Man, you all have been on fire with this stuff! That was a very entertaining and informative 7 pages of catching up!

Sorry for the lateness of this but talked to my mom the other day. She's under the weather so I didn't get a full cast ranking. Didn't even get a chance to show her the cast but I went with my initial hunch and this is how it went for this weeks Ted Neeley Handsomeness Report; "Do they still play old Law & Orders on A&E?" "I don't think they've done that for years." "Who was your favourite person on Law & Order?" "Oh, Brisco. You liked McCoy, and I guess he was good but I liked the story they built around Brisco. Wasn't the same when he left." "But mom who was the most handsome man on the show?" "Oh, the black guy that was partnered with Brisco at the end. What was his name? Green? He had the most charming smile. Very distinguished." "Is he better looking that Taye Diggs?" "Who's that?" "Some guy that wants money from Anthony Rapp." "I don't know what you're talking about."

I eagerly await your pick kateacola! Funnily enough the other day I was out for dinner with a group of friends. I showed up late and was informed that my closest friend had ordered for me. When the drinks arrived I was handed a Negra Modelo. I couldn't complain. Being Canadian I grew up calling it pop. However, years here have got me to say soda for anything non-brown and cola for anything brown.

And are they in cat form?

The entire time I was watching Sleepwalkers I kept thinking to myself "Doesn't young Brian Krause kinda look like Ryan Kwanten?" and I firmly blame last weeks discussion for this. However Kwanten > Krause.

Craft beer has been on the raise the last few years. More and more small breweries and craft bars have been opening up. One of my favourites Hitachino is actually available in the the US. But some other companies like Minoh and Braid are making Imperial stouts, but they aren't cheap. Also for the record I DO drink Kirin with my yakitori, but Sapporo isn't all that common. Asahi Super Dry and Kirin are the defacto beer in 80% of places.
-
I've always been partial to stouts and brown ales. Give me a good imperial coffee stout and call me in the morning.

Okay to lighten the mood on the Rent talk here's a bit that I thought was their order at the beginning of La Vie Boheme. The waiter shows up and recaps their order which were five miso soups, four seaweed salads, three tofu burger diners, two tofu dogs and one spaghetti with meatless balls. They scoff at the tastelessness of meatless balls which is just tofu which is what everybody else has ordered. Also they all get french fries too? Is this some weird Japanese fusion place?

I'm no expert on the stage version but I know the Sarah Silverman part was made up for the movie.

This is an interesting conundrum as well. If Mark truly believe he was cheated on by Maureen with Joanne, why would he still remain so friendly with her? In my experience with friends that have been cheated on the last thing they want to do is be friends with that person after the fact. Unless in the rare case both parties knew the relationship was in a bad state and they shouldn't really be together. So is he whipped because he's a friend/former lover or is it because he thinks he can win her back? Again this is hard because Mark is a horrible selfish self centered person, but I do believe he does care about his friends. So are his action motivated by his self interest in getting Maureen back or is he being a good friend? I think he's being nice in the hopes they can get back together, until he bonds with Joanne. Even then if Maureen came on to him he would pounce.
-
The issue of cheating and Maureen I was kinda confused on the whole time. When Mark was first talking about it I assumed he cheated on her with Joanne, but then that begs the larger question of what is cheating. There is no doubt that she met Joanne while dating Mark and eventually fell for her, but did that ever move to the physical aspect of things is unclear. Then for some cheating doesn't have to be physical it can be emotional. While she might have been physical with Joanne yet she may have started falling for her and then ended things with Mark when she wanted to take those feelings to the next stage of a relationship. Is that cheating? It depends largely on the person. Then again she may have ended things with him and then met and started dating Joanne. We only really her Mark's, the jilted lover, view on all of it so it's a bit bias. Then that brings up is she cheating on Joanne and here is where I got confused. I agree with Fister, Taylor, et all who say that Mark puts the idea in her head. Right after this she gets the phone call and Maureen calls Joanne "pookie" and it's a big deal. The obvious implication being she used her pet name for another person with her. This combined with her flirty ways and Mark's sour seed, morphs into "she's cheating." However, after that throughout the film on a few other occasions Maureen calls Joanne pookie. It's never drawn attention to it's just said and moves on. So is that what she just calls Joanne now? Was she just trying out a new pet name and it seems to have stuck? It's no longer the smoking gun of cheating it once was. I then thought "Maybe she's aware that if she feel in love behind Mark's back what if she does that with me." That doesn't make sense though because she was that person and surely must be aware of how their relationship came to be, unless it was true that they broke up and then met each other.

Also hate to make this a separate post but it's not Rent related so wanted to give it a bit of space. If you aren't good with spicy hot stuff samosas are a wonderful Indian dish. Like these Indian dumplings and they are divine. Aside from mutton vindaloo (also my favourite) it's my favourite Indian dish.

Feel very late to this all and will have to flip through my notes for things not mentioned. Some of this will be a bit of a rehash but I just want to get a bit aboard the whole why are they so hard on Benny train. Feel free to ITSV me because I haven't had time to watch it, but from what I get is Mark, Roger, Tom, and Benny use to all live in that apartment together. Maybe Maureen too or she was dating Mark but that's not the point. Some point during this Benny met a girl who happened to be from a rich family, feel in love and run off to be with her. Now she was rich and set him up with a job from her father who happened to own the building and surrounding properties in which he lived with his friends. Now because he's living this rich lifestyle he's "the man" and a "sell out" instead of their old friend. I feel a very key part of this story is missing though. What did Benny want to be? Mark, aspiring film maker. Roger, musician. Tom, scholar. Was Benny an aspiring artist of some sort? Did he let his dream die to be with the woman? This would help explain some of the hostility towards him because otherwise he's just doing his job. Otherwise, if he was just a young person trying to scrape by who happened to fall in love why would they be so mad? While we're at it he's bending over backwards to be kind to his old friends and try to do his work but they do nothing but shit on him and try to screw him over. He even offers them a free place, and free use of Cyberplace if they help him and Mark is disgusted by this, but yet later he "sells out" and gets a job and uses their equipment for his movie making for free which was basically what Benny was offering him. If Benny was secretly a social climber looking to sell out and climb the later why would he try so hard to help his friends or let things slide? Those two concepts seem at odds. Also, why are they fighting so hard to save tent city? Now, I don't want to come down on the homeless too hard, but they are trespassing on property right? It's sad that they have no where to go, but you know maybe instead of trying to help save the property they're squatting on, maybe volunteer at a homeless shelter or something that would actually help them more. Also what about the businesses and other people in the area? I'm sure they might not all agree. Rather, like the scene with the homeless lady that Mark tries to document, they're doing this for themselves. Its not that they're starving artist who also fight social causes rather they're fighting gentrification to protect their identity as an artist. "Hey homeless people good news I spent a lot of money and time to make a performance art piece to protect your right to live here in the cold and dirt of this abandoned lot. True, I could have spent that time trying to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness in the city or provide you with food, blankets, or clothing, but I didn't want to ruin our bohemian lifestyle. La vie boheme!" Again like mentioned before this would be easily forgivable if I wasn't 33 and jaded and neither were the actors.

Musical Mondays Off-Week 7 (Cinco DeNio's Pick)

I have no problem changing my name for this for the next mini-sode, provided I have a worthy C&O. I will ask but I have a strong suspicion that I already know who it will be. Although she was a Law and Order fiend so that may sway her. If she's game I'll have her rank them all.- 143 replies

I did, but he did call me a new poster I believe. I've accepted that my user name is generic and easily forgettable. Mine was Camarasaurs Bert. I relish any chance I have to drop dinosaur knowledge. It makes 6 year old me feel validated. I think cats are his second favourite animal. Right behind billy-bumblers. Also, here's for you

Musical Mondays Off-Week 7 (Cinco DeNio's Pick)
Cam Bert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
So I did sleep a bit on it and I thought more in general terms and some groupings to decided who was who. Now off to the last of my 12 hour work days. Baby CakeBug - Collins Cameron H - Angel, because you have to be paired with Baby CakeBug and you are key to getting everyone together Tomspanks - Mark, base solely on his good points like his love of his friends and ability to get people together. I regret this and found it the hardest. Fister - Roger Taylor Anne - Maureen, again in a good way about all her passion Quasar - Joanne Kate - Mark, because you took the quiz EllenMc - Benny, because you said so Jammer - Mark, because he's the arty one Cinco - Joanne 24 Hour Party Pizza - Roger Dan - Benny, because he's in charge and let's all stay here for free I did not put myself in because as I said I'm that guy on the subway!- 143 replies
