Musical Mondays-Week 4-Beauty and the Beast

That's kinda what I was thinking. I have three good ones I'm thinking about and about five bad. I shouldn't say bad, but of questionable quality. This is a bit early to ask maybe but is there a website that I can check what's available on streaming services in North America? I'm not sure how everybody is watching these movies but I'd hate to pick something that nobody can get a hold of.

Back to Beauty and Beast for a minute, I think the biggest question this film has to answer is if they are all French and living in France why is Lumiere the only one to have a French accent?

I'm very much on the fence for when my turn comes whether to pick something good or pick something HDTGM worthy.

He was done about halfway through. He claims that "every last inch of me is covered in hair." Who's that impressing? Also we know that's a lie because we can see your bare arms and clean shaven face. If he shaves them why boast about being hairy if you're so ashamed of arm hair?

I've always wanted to watch Jaws 4 because of how batshit terrible it's suppose to be, but then I remember that it's batshit terrible.

Also, where does all this food come from in Beast's castle? They have enough food to throw a big dinner for them and then make another one for Belle later and they feed both of them for the remainder of her stay. Yet no one every comes to the castle. No one is delivering them groceries, and it's not like any of the servants can just stroll into down and buy food. I think people would notice a walking talking stove and have more than a few questions. It's been 10 years and with limited refrigeration at the time, the pantry would have been rotted away. I think all of this adds up to support Cameron's theory of Cogsworth controlling time. That or somehow the non-aging curse affected the food in the pantry as well, and Beast is just a not a big eater.

Now as an adult I find the whole town and Gaston very creepy. He sets his sights on Belle and is like "I must have her." So he begins to woo her which fails miserably at every step. She's clearly not into him in anyway, yet he refuses to give up. He only wants Belle because she's the most beautiful too. He's not in love with her, he just deems her to be the prettiest and as he has a super inflated sense of self worth he believe he's owed her. That's just not healthy or right. So one of his plans is to hired people to perform a wedding. Like he gets a cake, a band, rents some chairs and a carpet. The whole nine yards. Despite being rejected in the past he somehow thinks just him walking in and asking she'll change her mind and agree to marry her on the spot? On top of that why is everybody going along with this? Maybe they're just super greedy and just want the money. I would think that the case but as pointed out clearly the bookstore owner doesn't care about making sells. Gaston also doesn't seem to work unless he sells his kills, so where is this money coming from? Is Gaston so important to the well being of the town that not one person he hired or that is helping stopped to say "Wait, you're having a wedding and haven't even asked her yet?" Rather these people think Belle so weird that they're like "Yea, she'll say yes because he's handsome and she should be so lucky." Why would they think that? What's wrong with these people?

Seeing as we're all sharing first time stories I'll add mine to the list. My parents liked movies but didn't like going to the theater to see them. I think we only ever saw about 5 movies as a family together. However, my grandma for whatever reason would take my sister and I to the movies all the time. It wasn't a babysitting thing either, sometimes my sister and I didn't have a say in the matter. If a Disney film was coming out she'd take us even if we didn't ask. We always went to McDonalds first, and then to the same theater and never were allowed theater treats. Being a very young boy this is not the kind of movie that I would want to see but was taken to anyway and ended up enjoying a lot. Having not seen this film since then, it's amazing to me how much of it I still remember so clearly, and if that doesn't speak to the quality of the film I don't know what will.
  9. Wow, that's incredibly lucky. Satoshi Kon is like the the John Cazale of the anime world. Only got to make a handful of films before being taken out by cancer and not a bad one in the bunch. His films should be study material for anybody interested in film and editing.
  10. Yes! Oshima is Gyro Gearloose. Beat Takeshi is Flintheart Glomgold. Juzo Itami is Launchpad McQuack and Satoshi Kon is.... hmmm... Darkwing Duck
  11. That's like having Huey and Dewy but no Louie!
  12. Please everybody if you haven't please watch The Taking of Pelham 123! The reason I'll fight for this movie over the others is that in many ways it's just as good as films like Dog Day Afternoon and Taxi Driver which are considered classics but for some reason it's not held in as high regard and is often overlooked. It holds up remarkably well and is full of sharp dialogue and great acting. Also the score is incredible. I love this movie! After watching this and if you want to see Walter Matthau continue being a bad ass, an oft overlooked crime film from the 70s worth checking out is Charlie Varrick. I saw your Throne of Blood review CakeBug, does this mean Ran will be coming soon?
  13. Also, Taylor Anne, what do you make of these new "motion posters" or whatever they're calling them for the live action Beauty and the Beast? Personally, I get it that they're trying to use star power to get people excited to see the movie but it makes me worried about how much of the film is going to have Lumiere and Mrs. Potts and all of those characters running around in human form.
  14. Sorry guys been busy the last few days and late to the conversation. I am 100% down on the whole classic movie thing. For me the biggest gaps I have of the ones mentioned are Casablanca, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and the Maltese Falcon. Now that I think about it I'm not sure if I've ever seen a Humphrey Bogart film... Curious. As far as ones that I want to see but somehow never get around to are Some Like it Hot and His Girl Friday. Some Like it Hot is strange for me because I love The Apartment to no end so you think I would be chomping at the bit to see Some Like it Hot, but yet I always think of something else to watch for better or for worse. Classics I have seen and in extremely nerdy ways would love to talk about are Hitchcock and Kurosawa films.

    Oscar pool 2017

The worst part about being a movie fan and living in Japan is that rarely do I get I chance to see any of the best picture movies before the show. Luckily starting this week I should be able to get some in before the actual ceremony, but it does seem to me that La La Land is a bit of a lock.
  16. It's all right. I think this one may work...
  17. (although I'm firmly in the R camp)
  18. Did you know that Canon the wonderful people behind Over the Top, Lifeforce, The Apple and other gems made their own musical version of Beauty and the Beast?
  19. Yes. Of all the shows I listen to he is the best. I feel bad that I kinda expect him to say it right more so than other hosts. Due to his fondness for Uatu the Watcher I just kinda assume he's the same and sees all and knows all.
  20. Okay, not to go back to the whole time travel stuff because as dask360 pointed out we are all spending more time thinking about this than anyone in this movie did, but I just one more thing to say. When you really think about it, I think the producers may have been right to change it to aliens from time travel. Okay you are a race of immortals with time travel capabilities and you can view into the future. You gaze into your machine and look into the future and what do you see? A society in which none of you are alive or around anymore. So, wouldn't you start to wonder at this point what happens to us? The options are that they leave the planet or kill each other off. That or they just go way way far in the future and leave a couple thousand year window open for the purpose of the game. Don't you think that if you were an immortal sent into the future though you'd be curious what happened to your people? I mean there has to be evidence but did any of them ever look into this? No. Well they could be in hiding I hear you say. That can't be because if they were MacLeod couldn't gain the prize could he? I'd like to think that after showing this cut to the producers they all sat around a table and brought up all the points dask, Cameron and I made before one of them was just like "Fuck it, they're aliens and they send them to the far off planet of earth" at which point everybody sighed over how relatively plot hole free aliens are compared to time travel.
  21. I hate to be that guy but it's actually "foo-re-ka-kay" (in IPA it's basically the same furikakeɪ) As someone who lives in Japan this has been driving crazy over the past month with no podcast host being able to say it right.
  22. Good choice! I admit though, it's going to be hard to rewatch this and not think of this
  23. This is the last one for the night for me, I swear to god once I start going I can't stop. So the movie starts with them at the opera and in the program they put on the first page of the "In the presence of Dr. Alan Neyman." Alan and MacLeod spot each other and share a friendly wave. Then the following day MacLeod shows up in his office looking forty years younger than he did at the opera the night before and Alan is unfazed. He simple says he's looking good and asks if he's been working out. Then when Dr. Cox shows up he's like "I've forgoten you were still alive." So he knows who he is and he isn't concerned or curious why he's so much younger. That's not the kind of comment you'd make to a middle aged man.
  24. Now I believe somebody may have already mentioned this, sorry for repeating, but as this is the biggest plot hole in the movie to me so it bares mentioning again. When Ramirez and MacLeod are being sentenced they are told that once there is one left alive they will have the choice to either stay in the future, become mortal, grow old and die or they could return to the past with their freedom and faith restored and live on as an immortal. MacLeod is clearly an old man, and has been aging and presumably dying since he defeated the Kurgan and becoming the one. 39 years later they decide to look in on him and say "He has still yet to decide" but isn't his decision obvious? He clearly decided to grow old and die because that's what he was doing. Did they think he was going to pull a fast one and on his deathbed magically repent and be whisked away back to the past? When he became the one, was he suppose to shout "I decided to grow old and die" like Michael Scott declaring bankruptcy and hope they were watching him at that moment? They left him no way to get in contact with them so how was he suppose to notify them of his decision? Why did they wait 39 years to get his decision? Then when Katana calls for the Porcupine twins and tells them to find him in the future they say "You said he was mortal and would never return." See they get it! Katana gets it too. So why not just send them to the future and bring them back and say "Oh, yea he decided to stay there." Why is this an issue? Also, Katana clearly hates MacLeod and wishes him dead, so why task him with the job in the first place? And for that matter Katana knows he's going to die so why bother having the porcupine twins murder him when he could wait another few years.
  25. Must have been all those prosthetics she had on.
