It might be a good idea to put some or maybe even most of that in spoiler tags, fyi. Really most of this is just chalked down to opinions and we agree on the main things but there are a couple of things I want to respond to.

*cracks knuckles* Okay y'all it's time for THIS WEEK IN FEMINISM! *crowd cheers* I'd like for my first point to be about how I really wanted Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kristy Swanson to make out for most of the movie. Diane and Kit had 0 chemistry but holy guacamole she had all of the chemistry with Sala. No but seriously I want to talk about Sala's characterization. When we are first introduced to CZJ's character she is a badass villain who seems to command the screen, which made me extremely excited for the good vs evil chemistry between her and Kristy Swanson which is why I immediately pretty much like "KISS HER!" But that seems to have been taken away from her almost immediately afterwards. The scene where she has Kristy tied up she is just questioning her about her boots and make digs about where she grew up. This doesn't pose problems for me at first, as they are cute boots and she can be interested in whatever the fuck she wants. However, she then allows herself to be distracted by shoes enough to let The Phantom just swoop in through the fucking laundry shoot?? That's some shit to the bull right there. So this makes me wonder why during a hostage situation she wants to focus on the shoes anyway... That's an odd character detail to throw in. I think I'm going to skip over The Phantom's line "Is this a ship full of women?" because that odd shit was covered in the episode. When she ends up talking about how in love he must be with Diana she literally says, "He could have had me but he picked her, that could only be love." Like wtf? Is she seriously standing there saying that she is more desirable than Diana is? Because people aren't allowed to have different tastes? Not to mention the fact that you just kissed him with no warning while he is trying to save someone? Idk this also just irks me because it's not like it's really the moment for him to just throw down and have some great sex. Really when she did kiss him I thought this was gonna be a Poison Ivy ripoff and her lips were gonna kill him, but alas I was disappointed. It also bothers me that they had that effect her esteem so much. You are CZJ. You are literally the most beautiful. Do not let fucking Billy Zane's ass make you stumble because he is literally not worth it. Go woo Kristy Swanson. Oh man and I almost forgot the gossip. Treat Williams says that Sala has all the best gossip... right because the only woman you seem to have around is a total shoe obsessed gossip. *rolls eyes* Also covered in the episode but when they kidnap Diana again and she says that shit to Sala about being mean and caring about things... why doesn't she say this to any of the men too? Why is she only thinking that Sala should be the one to discover what she cares about and stop being so mean? Can women not be mean? Can a woman not be a badass evil chick, Diana? I know in the moment you are kidnapped and all that and evil isn't a great thing, but at least maybe say that to Drax too or something? Hasn't your family known Drax for a while and you could maybe ask him if he cares about anything in his life? For someone who is clearly breaking gender rolls and breaking down the patriarchy there still seems to be a bit of internalized misogyny inside there, Diana. And in that moment I saw the last bit of that badass villain chick I had hoped for drift away. It could have been such a better arc for her to have been evil and fight Kristy Swanson but then be drawn to her for some reason only to find out that she truly cares about her. Then her priorities start to change and she finds herself joining up with The Phantom in order to protect Diana, who she sees is able to protect herself and Sala just stands there fighting pirates with hearts in her eyes. But instead we are given Catherine Zeta Jones in this weird part.

Okay before I get into "this week in feminism" I wanted to pull something from my notes I find really hilarious. During that 20 minute intro I got so fucking distracted that this is what I wrote - "This movie can not keep my attention. I just started thinking about what Hogwarts houses Jason, June, and Paul would be in. I think Paul is a Hufflepuff, Jason is either Ravenclaw or Slytherin, and I feel Slytherin vibes from June too. Suicide Squad spoilers and thoughts for anyone that wants them Idk if any of this even makes sense cause it's 1am and I listened to a horror podcast on the drive home from the theater and spooked myself lol.

Harry Potter is my shit Like I view talking about how much I love it like talking about the fact that I have legs. There's no need to it is just there. So imagine my hype for Avengers and times that by 100 and you get how infected I am with fuckin' Harry Potter lol. But to your point - I have not read it yet, I forgot to pre-order it so it's currently on it's way from Amazon. I also could not help myself and read the recap from someone who had seen the play and felt... confused... It definitely felt like Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way's brilliant fanfic had a sequel and was published. But I've heard that it's much better actually written and not just read through recounts.

Oh recommendations time! Love it! Just to get into the actual buying and reading of comics/graphic novels without the 70+ years of overwhelming history I recommend Saga, The Wicked + The Divine, and Sex Criminals. All seriously amazing stories by authors and artists who have written for DC and Marvel. And then on the Marvel side, because I kept up with buying those stories, I also can not recommend Hawkeye enough, but also Black Widow, Captain Marvel, and Ms. Marvel. All have recognizable characters and are amazing to get into without having read anything before.

I was mostly kidding. I can indeed separate the actor from the character and will always have Creed if I need to just think fondly onto any of his screen presence. However, I can't say I won't look at him with heart eyes because he's gorgeous. This does not in any way justify anything his character does in Black Panther. The Kilgrave stuff still makes me sick. It's hard to go around the internet (looking at you tumblr) when people want to post over and over about how perfect Jessica and him are together. Like jfc that's the worst. And I agree with you 100% about Gal in BvS. She was the shining diamond in the coal mine.

I agree, firsttimecaller, I liked it much more than most people/critics. I think my bar was so low for it that I was pleasantly surprised and I'm thinking that might be the case for this movie as well. I have things that bothered me with BvS and I know Jared Leto is gonna bother me with this, but we'll see after I see it tomorrow night. Oh also I haven't given BvS a second viewing and I was going through a breakup at the time so there's always the possibility that two and a half hours of The Big Bang Theory would have pleasantly surprised me during that time.

Also who knows if they'll ever understand why trying to capitalize on the Nolan era story-telling by making everything dark and gritty is such a bad idea. In my opinion what made all of those movies work so well were not that they were darker movies, especially since Batman in the Burton era was already dark and gritty, but rather that they were so real. They were focused on real life scenarios with these bonkers scenarios anchoring them. The mob controlling a city is real, and then you add in a crazy dude dressed like a clown and a dude that dresses up like a bat to fight him and boom you have a comic book movie. Even back in the Burton era he took the ridiculousness of it and made it entertaining while still incredibly dark. I'm in the faction of loving Batman Returns more than even Batman Begins and Dark Knight Rises (and not just because of Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman) because it's dark and ridiculousness done correctly. Suicide Squad is trying to be dark and ridiculous at the same time, and that's the problem. They're trying. Tim Burton had that shit already inside of him for so long that he didn't need to try.

Legit it never mattered what his role was going to be. It's Michael B. Jordan for shit's sake. That man... just... In all fairness I'm not actually sure they have neckbeards because it was online, but that is just now the term I throw on to any clear mouth breathing asshole who shoves his own head so far up his ass as to avoid being a decent human being. I thought one SS trailer looked good. I think it was the Bohemian Rhapsody one, and then the one directly after it lost me again. There was a Joker/Harley fanfic I discovered back in maybe 2009 called Dog Will Hunt that I thought was actually a brilliantly written introduction to those two. It's centered around Harley being his doctor at Arkham and how her obsession takes hold and just wow. I have no idea if it's still even on the internet anymore but if anyone likes to read good fanfic then I highly recommend it.

Turning the evil dude into a heartthrob and then explaining away all the evil like that's not completely a fucked up thing to do. I say this and then I see that Michael B Jordan was cast in Black Panther and I s2g if he is the villain I'm gonna probably wooiefy the shit out of him. Everyone in that cast is already a damn heartthrob.
