    King Kong

My point is I'm saying that influential doesn't necessarily automatically equal great. Technically The Birth of a Nation is considered to be influential but that's a terrible movie that sparked the actual creation of the KKK. So yeah some technically influential movies have created negative impacts. The Blair Witch Project inspired a completely new version of the Horror genre and even made it on Roger Ebert's 10 most influential movies of the 20th century list, but I know a LOT of people that genuinely hate that movie. But even still my point is actually that let's say King Kong wasn't really received as a good movie but still sparked a revolution of new ways to tell a story, should it still be on the Greatest list? Whether or not we think a film is good is completely subjective, as Cameron pointed out, but there are always movies we're going to think of as good or even great as a universal society. I'm saying that purely sticking a movie here that maybe a large group of people don't like solely because of it's influence muddles the point of this list. Obviously everyone's list is going to look differently, but AFI is the one that titled this list and then curated it, so we have to the interpret what they mean by "greatest." If they just want to stick things (again like Cameron said) should be on this list rather than actually deserve to be here then I claim this whole list is then pointless because that's not actually what they think is the greatest.

I believe you're talking about Swing Time cause we're all just wanting Top Hot to take its place lol, right? ETA: Also, shut your face Titanic deserves to be there LOL

    King Kong

My question is, do we have to leave something on the list because it is considered influential? Does that automatically make it good? I'm not saying this isn't good because I have yet to see it, but a lot of these weeks we have had people come and say that a movie must stay on the list because of how influential it was. But why? I think something can be influential and then improved on in later movies. I think something can inspire artists to make better things and may have not necessarily been good itself. This list is titled the 100 Greatest American Films, not the 100 Most Influential American Films. So, in my opinion, saying something is extremely influential has no bearing to me on whether or not it deserves to be on this list. I believe that's why I'm all for cutting out The French Connection, because I just don't think it's one of the greatest films I've ever seen despite how much it influenced.

I thought I had responded to this but I missed it whoops. Yeah Stallone was the heavy favorite going in to that night, but I honestly thought Rylance's performance was kinda phoned in compared to other things I've seen him in. I liked that movie but it just didn't wow me at all so I was pretty shocked that he won. But I remember when whoever presented the award said "Mark..." there was a bit of a pause and I for SURE thought it was going to Ruffalo and after seeing Spotlight I wish it had. As much as I loved Stallone in Creed, Ruffalo's performance was definitely award worthy.

It seems so accurate that June and Paul would be dogs and then Jason would be a fuzzy chicken lmao.

I'm not gonna say I was trying to pick dogs for Paul and Jason but I was definitely trying to pick dogs for Paul and Jason. Nothing has crazy enough hair for me to settle on a Jason dog tho, but maybe y'all can find one lol.

That is exactly the kind of dog I would picture June being too!

I'm very very excited for Singin' in the Rain! Spoiler alert: It might be the one to upend Titanic in the number 1 spot in my own AFI list.

Oh goodness I promise I'm not just coming here with bad things because I do love the way these forums are kept up. BUT I've noticed that there are indeed link backs at the top that can take you to say just "General Discussion" instead of going all the way back to the main forum page but they are so close to the same color as the background that they are almost impossible to differentiate. I may even be the only one who can see that they are there because I've actually had my color vision tested many times and I see more colors than most humans. Am I a robot? Maybe a mantis shrimp? Anyway here's a screenshot of it from my browser at work. I use Firefox there and Chrome at home and both give me the same results.

    The Shawshank Redemption

And I think it's because Marlon and DeNiro's portrayals of the same man is so universally beloved that I'm guessing none of the people voting could choose which one they wanted more.

    Your Updated AFI List

Wow, holy shit, I didn't actually know that. I've been going through my whole life assuming it won all these awards. My whole life is a lie. ETA: It didn't even get inducted into the Library of Congress until 2015. AFI IS A FRAUD.

    The Shawshank Redemption

Which is why it also seems like a bunch of really amazing comedies that have been around and held up for years also seem to get ignored. I still stand by the fact that Clueless is one of the best films this country has ever put out but it would never be considered for this list (hell when I found out it wasn't even on the best comedy list I about lost my shit). But there are very rare times when we see comedians get recognized, like Melissa McCarthy getting nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Bridesmaids, but I still don't think the AFI list would ever seriously take that movie into consideration.

    The Shawshank Redemption

Up, in my opinion, is better than Wall-E. Nemo is great but I feel like Up is an AFI kinda movie with the way you sob in the first 10 minutes. Also I wonder if they're trying to get you to honestly watch all of the films instead of just picking the best in each franchise with Fellowship and Star Wars. If they tell you to watch only the best ones then someone who had never seen them before will be dropped in the middle of the stories, but if they tell you the first ones then you get into the best ones once you continue.

Also if the AFI begins to pay attention to Oscar nominees rather than just winners then Logan would make the conversation.

    Your Updated AFI List

I absolutely would pick The Dark Knight. I believe it changed the game in terms of Superhero movies, and we can talk about Iron Man being a big starting point all we want but in my opinion Nolan's Batmans are the true starters of this modern genre, even if Spider-Man was even before that. Not to mention that Heath winning a posthumous Oscar for his performance puts it above the rest in terms of how seriously the AFI would take it.

HDTGM Classics Vol. 12 The Back-Up Plan (8/10 9PM EST)

Then I vote we skip it. I've seen it before and that's enough to last me a lifetime.

HDTGM Classics Vol. 12 The Back-Up Plan (8/10 9PM EST)

Cameron, you're question requires a yes or no answer so I'm not exactly sure if I'm voting to skip The Green Lantern or skip The Back Up Plan.

    The Shawshank Redemption

Couldn't agree more. I have friends that purposefully choose that over other, note better, beers on tap and I always ALWAYS make fun of them. ETA: I do purposefully order it if we're also doing shots and I need a chaser that's cheap lol.
