Musical Mondays Week 39 Josie and the Pussycats

That seems like that typical teen movie trope that probably was just in this movie because of that scene where RLC goes down the stairs in that red dress in She's All That. I betcha they were really trying to capitalize on us all thinking she was some gross monster person until she dresses up and then suddenly she's the most gorgeous.

That's definitely Matt Damon. To be fair they said that Heath Ledger was the new Matt Damon not that he was the young Matt Damon. They were just doing the same thing they were doing with colors and shoes. It didn't matter that Matt Damon was still young and a hot commodity, but it had already been Matt Damon's "week" so now it was time to push someone new lol.

No I completely understand what you're saying but I was reading that and still my first thought was that I would probably say yes because not only is that my dream, but also because I know I could do it and deliver a quality product. So this is why I don't actually fault J&TP for saying yes and why I don't think that's indicative of them just wanting fame.

Oh here's the biggest question I have about the movie: What was the point of ostracizing Val from the get go? She was totally on board with the whole thing until Wyatt started making her feel like she wasn't welcome. It was only then that she started asking questions and then they made the decision to get rid of the two of them. But if they had just made it about all three of them then I bet none of them would have questioned anything and they would have never found out about Fiona's plan.

Okay I see now what you mean, and I absolutely don't disagree with you, but I also don't know if I totally agree as well. The reasoning for me is basically based on being an artist myself. I want to be able to photograph the stuff on my own terms and do what I want to do, but I also need to be able to pay my rent. So I take wedding gigs despite not actually liking the act of doing weddings. I think I've mentioned before that my ultimate dream is to walk by the magazine stands at Barnes & Noble or [Enter local grocery chain here] and see my photo on the cover of Vogue or Vanity Fair. That could be interpreted to some as fame chasing, but really that's just the ultimate publication for someone in fashion/portrait photography. That's the big leagues, and when I get there I know I'll feel accomplished. I imagine for these girls that they feel the same about getting a record deal. As far as we know within the story they've worked there asses off and played shitty gigs for 5 bucks but it isn't doing them any favors. You can love what you until you're red in the face but if there's no audience then you'll never get out of where you're at. Another analogy I'll use is instagram. I fucking hate tagging my photos, I think it's cheap and nothing but clutter, but I also recognize that the difference in getting 10 likes from your followers and 75 likes and getting featured on a business page is having to resort to that kind of cheapness. And unfortunately in the photography business right now, likes mean everything. As far as signing the deal before they've been heard, Josie does question it before they actually sign, but Alan Cumming in all of his manipulative swarmy brilliance basically gives them this idea that it's this or nothing. This is what they had been working for their whole time together and so they were convinced this was there one shot so they took it. I don't fault them for that at all! In fact I fault them more for having an incredibly shitty manager that didn't sit down and read the contract before having them sign it. Don't worry, they're not.

To me, punk is being 13 in the middle of a mosh pit for the first time and going NOPE and going right back to your assigned seat.

But that's your interpretation of these bands. I'm sure bands in all genres only care about being famous, but you can't lump every band in this form of pop-punk into that category just because it's not a type of sound you're interested in. I mean J&TP's sound literally was only created to ride a current wave of popular music that's for sure, but I think to say that then everyone in that genre in real life is only doing the same undermines people's genuine hard work. What's funny is I don't even like the bands that you listed but I definitely was into that kind of music growing up so despite that fact that I honestly can't stand a single thing New Found Glory puts out I still remember being very very into that style of music in middle school. EDIT: I looked up a lot of bands that were considered pop-punk back then and Fall Out Boy is another example of the kind of pop-punk I never got into but then Panic! At the Disco came out in 04 and I was all aboard that. Another interesting thing is that Paramore was the only band with even one female member listed and even they didn't start until 2004, so J&TP really was capitalizing on a market in a genre that hadn't been filled yet.

Punk Rock Prom Queen. Gosh Cameron at least get it right But yes I understand what you mean, but I'll even throw out a band I loved back then called Something Corporate that wrote a song called "Punk Rock Princess" that is along this same genre that pisses off a lot of people who consider themselves "true punk." Which is why I threw out that last statement. Yes, half in jest because I also think the punk vibe is doing what you want rather than what society dictates, but when you talk to people from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, that were in the punk scene they look at things like that and they sneer. Even still I'll hear shit about what a punk can and can't do. So while you and I may think this could be considered a punk life, the punk scene would say otherwise, which is why then this all gets classified as pop-punk because these people just don't have that grit. That's what I meant by that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX0uEs3I6TA

I don't think any of us said talented, but rather genuine. It's a thing we see in real life all the time that bands that play their instruments are positioned in a better light overall than bands like N*SYNC or One Direction. They're accused of being nothing more than marketing ploys by studios, which may be true, but that shouldn't take away from the talent the singers actually have. Justin Timberlake nor Harry Styles would still have careers if they couldn't actually perform or write. Also, I'm sorry about making you feel old lmao.

Okay, but I don't think that Josie and the Pussycats are at all trying to pretend to be edgy. Their songs are all about love and having boyfriends that are too disinterested in the relationships they're currently in. I will give you that their sound is definitely more in the vibe of the last set of musicians that you mentioned, but I'll say again that in 2001 that's what we were at in terms of sound. In the story I'm not even really sure if we're supposed to consider them "edgy." The girl in the music store that is a "free thinker" is what I think we're supposed to consider edgy but J&TP seem just more like they like what they like and they write songs about what they know. I mean we see them all working like 3 jobs and volunteering at food banks and animal shelters. That's not exactly the punk life lol.

This reminds me that Eugene Levy being one of the most Canadian people being used to promote American consumerism before he says "God Bless America" is also a moment that still cracks me up.

I used to collect the catalogs simply because they would put legit poetry at the bottom of every page. Made me feel super deep when I would quote fucking dELiA*s and no one else would get it.

Yeah, also I think the market was starved for female centric bands that weren't solely pop. Obviously there were indie bands at the time and other female led bands left over from the 90s, but none of them were really getting as much air time as their pop counterparts. For example - I know Sleater-Kinney released an album in 2002 but that wasn't getting any plays, even on the rock stations, here in Dallas at the time. It wasn't really until 2004 or 2005 that I genuinely remember female led rock bands getting airtime. I believe it was even around that time that No Doubt's music style changed from alternative rock to pop-punk so it shows a lot more about the era than I think anything else.

I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT I AM READING HERE Y'ALL Jk in all honesty I do understand why this doesn't hit with certain people. Especially since I was 11 when this came out and was exactly the person this movie was targeted to. My best friend at the time and I both dressed up as Melody for Halloween that year and I owned not just one but two pairs of cat headbands (one was the legit ones they wear and the other the heavily marketed one you could get at Target after the movie came out). So to say I ate this shit up is an understatement. But even as an adult I love this for it's subtle comedy moments that I didn't get as a kid. While I understand what you mean about Avril Lavinge like music, I still think we need to look at this through the 2001 pop-punk lens so I think it's a little unfair to say that just because this was music made for a movie and some may not have enjoyed the sound that it is less genuine than the music of DuJour. Also, we have to look at it through the lens of the story where these three girls are working their asses off, writing their own music, and have songs that they like, and in that sense they are more genuine no matter what kind of music they are playing. Obviously I still want to defend this really bad because even in 2018 I have a lot of these songs on my rotation (Pretend to Be Nice is a god damn jam and I will not hear otherwise) and to be honest I think this just comes down to musical preference more than anything. Alan Cumming is legit the winner of this movie, but I think Parker leaning into the ridiculousness of it is actually perfect. If she wasn't acting like she was in a sketch I don't think I would have liked her performance as much as I do.

Josie brought him along because she knew Missi Pyle was going to try and steal him away if he was left in Riverdale, and then she told him that she had to convince the record company that he was her guitar tech. The part that doesn't make sense is that if they had convinced he was part of their crew he should have been there a lot more for the BTS stuff. I think my favorite lines were all the ones where the acknowledge the comic like when the manager asks Missi Pyle why she was even there and she goes, "Because I was in the comic." Just a little bit of genius for me to explain why this super shitty character that legit had no purpose was still hanging around. Also again legit every DuJour line still cracks me up.

I also thought all the ads were paid for, but I also thought you legitimately couldn't use any products in TV or movies if there wasn't some kind of agreement. Why else would there be so many things where people use a computer with a pear on it rather than an apple. So I always figured that McDonald's and Target were in on this action from the get go... and now I'm wondering if there was any backlash for it by the companies. It certainly doesn't paint corporations in a great light since they all seem part of the problem.

I have to admit in all of my viewings of this movie I don't remember a young boy having to hide his love of this band. Also never saw Backdoor Lover as anything more than a butt sex innuendo song that would easily go over the head of any child watching but then be a subtle sex joke for adults (gay or straight). In my opinion I thought everything about DuJour was brilliantly done to poke fun at boy bands of the time. Especially cause I'm sure there are a lot more sex references in Backstreet Boys and N*SYNC than even I realize.

Hahahahaha as soon as he said that I knew that was gonna be the end of it, and honestly thank god lol. I also wouldn't have called that a debate as much as intelligent conversation about current societal issues. It's nice to be able to come here and speak about such things freely without everyone just yelling at each other the moment someone disagrees (obviously not including the threads where in fact trolls have come on and yelled the moment they disagreed).

I'm really disappointed that my revelation that Lorenzo was IN Grease didn't make it in after yours. Of course I would still say you win because you brought up Grease first and that made me make the connection that maybe they made a Sandy D reference because he was a little salty that he didn't get to play Danny.
