Two musical mondays where I have killed the conversation I am on a ROLL lmao.

Oh 100% He obviously has a skewed vision of women and an overactive imagination so that's why I wasn't even entirely sure if she was ever at fault for their issues. But I think that's where this movie fails and the mini-series probably prevails because that's the kind of information we need and not a really long sequence about Katie Holmes giving him a hand job.... have I mentioned how grossed out I am by that???

They never really state but I assumed she had cheated on him by how much he had yelled at her when she was at the hospital and how much he called her a "wh*re." She never really seemed to argue with him about it and instead just runs away, so to be completely honest I'm not entirely sure she really did cheat and she was just relinquishing her guilt or if that had also been all in his mind and she just couldn't stand him wrongfully yelling anymore.

This was the only lip syncing I could actually understand cause he was hearing these really famous songs and just imagining they're actually coming out of the people around him's mouths.

I mean all of that is "I think" cause I could definitely have missed something as well lol

I thought I saw something that said Topeka, but I think that the point is the mom never made it back. I think she was murdered in LA and Dan goes back on his own.

I also feel like having his mother in that spot in the noir fantasy sheds a bit of a light onto an Oedipal complex. I think it just really shows how effected he was by seeing/hearing his mother have sex at such an early age that he puts her into a former lover category in his story.

So why the lip-syncing? RDJ can actually sing and apparently so can Katie Holmes (I say apparently because she was on Broadway but honestly I'm not sure that is an actual piece of evidence that this woman can sing). I understand that the hospital hallucinations were not them really singing, but every time RDJ performs he should be actually singing because it makes no sense that he wouldn't be able to. Also the lips were never actually matching up with the pronunciation of the words so it was really really distracting.

I assumed it was him finally accepting medical help as well. Alfre Woodard mentions something about "take the pills" but I thought at first it was just for the pain but now I'm wondering if he refused all medications until he actually started talking to Mel Gibson. Like maybe Katie Holmes jerking him off was the cure this whole time. (Gross.)

Speaking of, for the first half hour I just kept thinking to myself, "This is just Tony Stark 15 years younger..."

I also hated Dan Dark at the beginning, but I wonder if that's the movie expecting us to just jump into this story head first and just understand everything that's going on immediately. But it was reeeeaaaallllyyyy hard to watch any of the scenes in the hospital because they just insisted on having such an extreme closeup on that disgusting makeup. Very upsetting. Do not recommend.

Ah just saw Tawny Newsome was one of the guests at Largo last night! So excited to hear her talk about one of the ones done (I have no idea which show she did) cause she's hilarious!

I have been a long and hard Gryffindor for my entire Harry Potter career and finally I have come to terms with the fact that I am in fact a Hufflepuff. It was when I was discussing this with friends and I said that I want to stand up for the oppressed and swing some punches in a certain direction but if anyone were to yell at me I would probably cry, and my friend was like "That's the most Hufflepuff thing." So now anytime someone shits on Hufflepuffs (like it's always) I always wanna jump in and be like "EVERY HOUSE HAS EXCELLENT QUALITIES THIS ISN'T A CONTEST EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE LITERALLY HOUSE COMPETITIONS BUT SHE KINDA DICTATED WHO WOULD WIN EVERY TIME"

That's such a specific criteria I'm not sure I can think of any besides those two. Zooey Deschanel does a great Smith cover on the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack but her character still sings it a bit in the movie, and then I really like JLaw's Mockingjay song but she sings in the movie too. You've pushed me into a corner here, Cam.

That's all totally fair and understandable. Also totally on a personal note, I do highly recommend The Raven Cycle for a series to read, but I hope they never make a movie out of it cause they'll just fuck up what I like about it lol.

I understand what you are saying, and as I said I agree with you on how that is an interesting point of view, but what I am saying is that female YA readers want the world of what it's like to be a witch finding out what her own powers are just as much as they want to read about finding out about magic as a human. My example is a series I'm currently reading: The Raven Boys. This book not only gives you the perspective of the boy longing to find magic but doesn't have any himself, but also gives you the perspective of a psychic girl and a boy that can walk through dreams and bring things into reality. The multiple points of views not only give you the excitement of finding out about this world, but also the excitement of already living with these powers. You know how the book was written, whether broken up between Lena and Ethan's POV or just solely Ethan, but the movie definitely breaks them up. And in my honest opinion, I was way more interested in Lena's internal struggle between light and dark than I was about Ethan's bewilderment to being introduced to Lena's magical world. I believe that I mentioned in the recommendations thread that I honestly can't figure out why he was really there for 90% of the movie. It seemed like in one moment Lena is trying to hide everything from him and in the next she's telling him about her entire family history and he just is like oh cool let's go meet them and I'll spill my guts under a spell.

*It was one of the women but now I feel bad that I don't know their voices well enough to attribute the quote. But I would argue that, while you are correct in being the POV from the "muggle" is a good way to enter this world, this particular movie really has us in both worlds enough that you could have it in Lena's POV and you would still be mystified by the magic. Cause like Jason had asked if this was a "Twilight for boys" and Paul answered no, which leads me to that point that we don't need to be in Ethan's POV at all, because the girls that are reading this book and watching this movie then aren't wanting to be in the POV of someone falling in love with magic, but the one to hold the magic and the power.

I want to watch the movie about Viola Davis seemingly being the only black person in this town who has to deal with their bull shit obsession with the Civil War.

I love that so far in this episode they've all realized this movie is so bad they just start talking Harry Potter.

Fuck I just remembered this scene in Hail Caesar and just busted out laughing. This is why I don't think he himself is a bad actor he's just getting handed these TERRIBLE scripts and you can't polish a turd (or replace Harrison Ford).

Okay yes I'll give those to him too. That part in the second one where he just yells for like a solid 5 minutes cause they found out Jonah Hill hooked up with Ice Cube's daughter is one of the greatest things in a comedic movie lol.
